Violent Riots Target African Nationals Living In Israel

A demonstration held Wednesday night in Tel Aviv in favor of deporting Africans in Israel turned into a frenzied mob. In Israel last night, violence broke out in a district of Tel Aviv. A demonstration against the country's large community of African nationals turned into a riot. Shouting slogans, such as blacks out, more than 1,000 Israelis took to the streets and stores belonging to African nationals were attacked and looted.

At least 17 rioters were arrested. Sheera Frenkel reports on the rising tensions over Israel's African community.

SHEERA FRENKEL, BYLINE: N'ola and Haya Hafitz(ph) sit inside the bodega they run in the Hatikva neighborhood of Tel Aviv. Just last night, the street in front of their store was filled with an angry mob, burning trashcans and looting stores. Niall(ph) Hafitz says he understands why people are angry. The neighborhood was poor to begin with and the influx of African nationals looking for work and housing has only made things worse.

The Hafitzs say they weren't part of the mob last night, but they also didn't interfere when the store opposite theirs was attacked. The store owner, Amin Zagatar(ph), is a Eritrean. He's been living in Tel Aviv for six years and speaks fluent Hebrew. He says he wasn't surprised when the mobs attacked his store.

AMIN ZAGATAR: (Through translator) A group of men had come in the morning and told me they would be back. They asked if I was the owner or if I worked for an Israeli. They threatened me. They said that if I was here when they returned they would kill me.

FRENKEL: It's not the first time Zagatar has been attacked. He says that, two months ago, a group of Russian-speaking men beat him with wooden planks outside his store. And last month, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the apartment building he shares with dozens of other Eritrean and Sudanese refugees.

ZAGATAR: (Through translator) I'm afraid. Day and night, I'm afraid they will come and get me. I just want to get out of here.

FRENKEL: Over the last decade, more than 60,000 Africans have illegally entered Israel through its porous southern border with Egypt. At last night's rally, Israeli politicians from right wing parties spoke about the fear felt by many Israelis at the presence of African nationals in Tel Aviv.

FRENKEL: Lawmaker Miri Regev and Prime Minister Netanyahu (unintelligible) warned the demonstrators, Africans will overwhelm Israelis in Tel Aviv. The crowd cheered when she described the African community as a cancer. They cheered even louder when she blamed leftists in Israel for preventing the state from deporting the Africans.

Israeli newspapers have been filled with headlines in recent weeks about the links between the African community and crime. In the last 30 days, two cases of rape have been linked to Eritrean men in Tel Aviv. Police say that violent crimes among the community are on the rise. But some Israeli commentators voiced alarm over last night's violence against the Africans.

In the popular Hebrew language daily Maariv, columnist Shai Golden wrote about the shame he felt for the way the refugees are being treated. Israel is a country of refugees, he wrote. It should be the last place where they are persecuted.

New Insights into How DNA Mutations Lead to Cancer

Spontaneous changes in our genes can lead to cancer, if key genes involved in cell division are affected. New research is shedding new light on how mutations in our genetic material can combine to cause cancer.

Chromosomal deletions in DNA often involve just one of two gene copies inherited from either parent. But scientists haven?t known how a deletion in one gene from one parent, called a ?hemizygous? deletion, can contribute to cancer.

A research team led by Stephen Elledge, a professor in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, and his post-doctoral fellow Nicole Solimini, has now provided an answer. The most common hemizygous deletions in cancer, their research shows, involve a variety of tumor suppressing genes called STOP genes (suppressors of tumorigenesis and proliferation) that scatter randomly throughout the genome, but that sometimes cluster in the same place on a chromosome. And these clusters, said Elledge, who is also a professor of medicine at Brigham and Women?s Hospital, tend to be deleted as a group. ?Eliminating the cluster gives a bigger bang for the deletion buck,? he said.

This finding is especially interesting in light of the two-hit model of cancer formation, which holds that both copies of a recessive gene need to be inactivated to trigger a biological effect. Thus the loss of a single tumor suppressor copy should have little or no influence on tumor cell proliferation because the remaining copy located on the other chromosome is there to pick up the slack.

Elledge?s research points to a different hypothesis, namely that STOP genes in a hemizygous deletion aren?t recessive but are instead haploinsufficient, meaning that they depend on two copies to function normally. ?If a tumor suppressor is haploinsufficient, then a single gene copy lacks the potency needed to fully restrain tumorigenesis,? The results also offer a different take on the two-hit model in carcinogenesis, Amon said. Being remarkably unstable, cancer cells can delete gene copies at every turn of the corner. If the loss of a single tumor suppressor copy provides no survival advantage for the tumor, then the tumor has no incentive to retain the cell with that deletion. But if the loss of that copy boosts proliferation, then the probability of a second hit later is greatly increased. ?So haploinsufficiency is a way for the cancer cell to dramatically accelerate the acquisition of growth beneficial mutations,? Amon said.

In other words, all it takes is a 50 percent reduction in gene activity for a cancer cell to grow. ?That tells us it?s a lot easier to get cancer than we might have hoped,? Amon said.

According to Elledge, the number of hemizygotic deletions averages roughly six per tumor, with some tumors?breast and pancreatic, for instance?averaging up to ten. Each deletion involves 25 to 40 genes, many of them STOP genes, but also a few GO genes (growth enhancers and oncogenes) that enhance proliferation. That the STOP genes substantially outnumber their GO counterparts is important, Elledge explained, because it means cancer cells can tilt scales toward proliferation without also compromising it at the same time.

?The data reveal a lot of haploinsufficient players that have small effects individually, but large effects in combination,? Elledge said. ?Unfortunately, it?s not easy to see how to take advantage of that chemotherapeutically.?

What?s important about the results, he emphasized, is that they open up new views on how tumors evolve. Moreso, they underscore the importance of proliferation as a fundamental feature of tumor growth, he added.

The challenge now, Elledge said, will be to find out which of the genes in a recurring deletion are haploinsufficient. ?At the moment, we estimate roughly 25 percent,? he said. ?So these findings could also have important ramifications for other human diseases in addition to cancer.?

Supercomputer gets a memory boost with 380 petabytes of magnetic tape

Remember the Cray XK6 at the University of Illinois that drives the National Science Foundation's Blue Waters project? Well, it looks like it's getting a little memory upgrade, sorta. We're not talking a slick new SSD here, or even a sweet NAS, all that computational power requires nothing less than... tape. Okay, so it's actually a full storage infrastructure, and some of it -- 25 petabytes no less -- will be disk-based. The rest -- a not insignificant 380 petabytes -- will be the good old magnetic stuff. The idea is that the disk part will be used for instant access, with the tape section serving as "nearline" storage -- something between an archive and online solution. Spectra Logic is providing the tape, and says it'll take a couple of years to implement the whole lot. Once complete, the system will support the supercomputer's lofty tasks, such as understanding how the cosmos evolved after the Big Bang and, y'know designing new materials at the atomic level. And we thought we were excited about out next desktop.
