(AP) ? When Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes first got together, he jumped on a couch, she gushed girlishly, and many of their fans said, "Huh?"

Their split could cause just as much drama.

Not only are the images of two Hollywood stars at stake, so is the future of 6-year-old Suri, with some speculating that Holmes' decision to file for divorce in New York might mean she's seeking sole custody of their daughter.

Ultimately, Cruise may have the most to lose.

"There's no question this divorce is going to hurt his public image," said Dorie Clark, author of the forthcoming "Reinventing You: Define Your Brand, Imagine Your Future."

"His brand was already tarnished significantly when he first got together with Holmes five years ago and was infamously jumping up and down on Oprah's couch, and shortly afterward the videos of him praising Scientology were leaked," she continued. "This divorce is another opportunity for questions to be raised about his personal life, his religious beliefs ? which many consider outside the mainstream ? and that's not what a box-office star really wants."

California divorce attorney Michael Kelly, who is not involved with the Cruise-Holmes case, called Holmes' East Coast filing "a tactical move" that signifies "there will be an attempt to gain an advantage."

New York's comparative-fault divorce laws could be advantageous for Holmes, he said. The couple lived in Los Angeles.

Cruise and Holmes married in 2006 after a whirlwind love affair. He proposed at the Eiffel Tower. Their wedding was held at a 15th century Italian castle.

She filed for divorce Thursday, ending her first marriage. This will be Cruise's third divorce. He was previously married to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children.

Cruise showed up alone at the recent Los Angeles and London premieres of his latest film, "Rock of Ages." Holmes also was absent earlier this month when Cruise received the Friars Club Entertainment Icon Award in New York. But he did bring Suri with him, allowing her to stay up late for the raunchy proceedings.

"Divorce will actually help Katie Holmes' brand," Clark said. "More people are going to be thinking about her and aware of her. This is generating a lot of sympathy and interest from people."

Holmes, 33, rose to fame on the teen soap "Dawson's Creek." She went on to appear in "Batman Begins," and earned raves for her roles in independent films such as 2003's "Pieces of April" and 2005's "Thank You for Smoking." She took a break after giving birth to Suri in April, 2006, and marrying Cruise in November.

She did just a handful of roles until stepping things up in 2011. Holmes played Jackie" Kennedy in the Emmy-winning miniseries "The Kennedys," appeared in Adam Sandler's "Jack and Jill" and just wrapped a film with William Hurt. She said she's set to start another project in July.

Meanwhile, Cruise, who turns 50 on Tuesday, has remained a megastar. His latest role, as an Axl Rose-style rock star in "Rock of Ages," has won him strong reviews (though not corresponding box-office results), and his most recent "Mission Impossible" installment, "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol," has made more than $690 million worldwide.

"Tom Cruise's brand has always been the dynamic, likable hero ? the 'Mission Impossible' star that you're rooting for ? and it becomes harder for the public to get behind someone as a hero and want to go to the box office and cheer them on when there are serious questions about what kind of husband and father he is," Clark said.

Holmes' attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, said Friday that "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Denon AVR-1613

Even just a few years ago, many home theater receivers required optional iPod docks that were clumsy to set up and featured primitive on-screen user interfaces. The Denon AVR-1613 ($399.99 direct) has baked-in iPod and AirPlay capability, and sits squarely in the mainstream end of Denon's lineup. It's a solid receiver and a good buy as an up-to-date centerpiece to a home theater system, even though it clearly shows signs of its 1990s-era roots.

Design, Inputs, and Features
Measuring 5.9 by 17.1 by 13.0 inches (HWD), the The AVR-1613 weighs just over 18 pounds. A front-panel USB input makes it easy to pop in a thumb drive, or access the stored contents on an iOS device while charging it simultaneously. The power cord is hardwired, which is unfortunate if it fails down the road, but it's not a big issue for a lower-priced receiver. In standby mode, Denon claims the AVR-1613 draws just one tenth of a watt.

There are five HDMI inputs?one more than the Yamaha RX-V473 ($449.99, 3.5 stars)?including a convenient port on the front, which is great for plugging in a smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer. All of the HDMI inputs support video switching, so you won't have to use two remote controls to watch different sources. There are no component or S-video inputs and outputs, though. All you get besides HDMI are two sets of composite inputs and one set of outputs, although at this point that's less of a problem than it would have been, say, two years ago. If you need these connectors, the RX-V473 is a better choice.?

AirPlay support is a recent addition. It lets you stream music over the air wirelessly from an iPhone, iPod, iPad, Apple TV, or even a computer running iTunes. Unfortunately, the AVR-1613 itself does not integrate Wi-Fi. To use AirPlay, you need to connect the receiver to your home network via a wired Ethernet connection. Pandora and Sirius XM streaming, as well as access to Denon's own radio site, which delivers more than 12,000 Internet radio stations, are all onboard.

Denon AVR-1613

The AVR-1613 is also DNLA 1.5 certified, but there's no HD Radio or even AM tuner?your only terrestrial option is FM stereo. I would have liked to see stereo Bluetooth support, especially now that Android handsets dominate smartphone sales by a significant margin. On the plus side, you'll still get better sound quality via the phone's headphone output?using an inexpensive Y-cable available at Radio Shack, as the AVR-1613 lacks a front-mounted stereo mini-jack.

The included remote control is much simpler than the one Yamaha bundles with the RX-V473. Unfortunately, it was rather stubborn in my tests. Sometimes the AVR-1613 just didn't respond to my commands, as if it were stuck thinking about the last thing I asked for.?In addition to the remote, the receiver comes with an Audyssey setup microphone for speaker calibration, a Getting Started guide, and an owner's manual in PDF format on a CD. Denon also, inexplicably, throws in a copy of Nero 9 Essentials.

Setup, Calibration, and Amplification
To get started, you'll need an HDMI cable, a set of passive speakers (either stereo or 5.1), and a TV, which you'll need for setting up the receiver and accessing the iPod interface as well as for watching movies.

On first bootup, the AVR-1613 will walk you through an on-screen setup wizard using the remote control. It asks whether you have a center channel, surround speakers, or a subwoofer. Then it offers to measure the acoustics of your room using the included microphone and a series of sound tests. You plug the setup microphone into the Setup Mic port on the front panel. From there, the system walks you through setting up your input devices (such as a Blu-ray player or Xbox 360), and then prompts you to connect to a wired network.

As a proper home theater receiver, the AVR-1613 includes five discrete channels of amplification, with each outputting 75 watts at 0.08 percent THD. Audiophiles still prefer separate preamps and amplifiers, but Denon receivers have always acquitted themselves well in terms of sound quality.

Fortunately, the Denon AVR-1613 simply sounds great?anyone concerned about the actual output will be more than pleased with this receiver. I tested the AVR-1613 with a set of Energy Take Classic 5.1 ($399, 4 stars) speakers, which includes five two-way satellites and a 200-watt, 8-inch powered subwoofer. Through the satellites, I heard clean, powerful sound at full tilt, with smooth, transparent highs and a clearly defined, three-dimensional image. The Take Classic 5.1 satellites offer 89 dB sensitivity, which isn't the most efficient design out there. But even so, the AVR-1613 had no trouble driving these to ear-splitting volumes.

To test the Denon AVR-1613's home theater prowess, I ran scenes from the the 2010 DTS Demonstration Blu-Ray Disc through the receiver, a Samsung BD-D5500 ($159.99, 3.5 stars) Blu-ray player, a Sony Bravia KDL-46EX620 ($809.99, 3.5 stars), and?the Energy Take Classic 5.1 speakers. Generally speaking, the Denon handled the job with aplomb; it sounded slightly warmer than the Yamaha RX-V473, with less treble emphasis and a slightly more full-bodied lower midrange. Even so, voices, arrow shots, and horse gallops sounded clear and distinct in Robin Hood (the 2010 film with Russell Crowe), and the Take Classic 5.1 had no problem rendering many sound sources simultaneously throughout the image. With the DTS-encoded Despicable Me, the AVR-1613 clearly separtated the rocket ship engines and low rumble while in flight, and put up clear dialog throughout.

iPod Playback and UI Issues
The AVR-1613's digital music chops need work. I plugged my iPhone into the front-mounted USB port and switched the Denon's source to iPod/USB. (Unfortunately, it doesn't work with iPads in this mode.) You can play stored iPod music two ways: In Remote Mode, which lets you control playback directly from the iPod, and Browse Mode, which puts up track and artist info on the screen, and lets you select it using the Denon's remote control. I tested the iPod playback with two devices: the aforementioned iPhone, and a 4th-generation iPod nano. Both worked, although the AVR-1613 was temperamental. Sometimes it played music back fine; other times, it remained stuck at the beginning of the song.

A firmware update became available toward the end of the review period, which promised to take 21 minutes to install. Excited by the prospect of eliminating the bugs, I installed it?only to see that the on-screen menu text, already buggy, pixelated, and slightly wobbly, became downright unreadable on the music playback screen. Everything looked doubled; rebooting the monitor and the receiver didn't help. Worse, iPod playback was buggier than before. Once, it started a song at full blast, threatening to deafen me and blow out the speaker system. It wouldn't respond to the volume dial, and wouldn't even shut off with the power switch; I had to hold it down for five seconds to get the receiver to power down. (Next up would have been pulling the plug.) It didn't do this again, but the intermittent playback issues continued.

AirPlay and Conclusions
On the plus side, AirPlay connectivity worked great. Once I configured the unit over wired Ethernet, I had no problem streaming music from various AirPlay-compatible devices to the AVR-1613. The receiver displays album art on screen whenever available, which is something the Yamaha RX-V473 doesn't do. Pandora playback also worked well; I logged in with my account, started several of my stations, and listened to uninterrupted streaming Internet radio.

I also tested Denon's free iOS remote control app, which works with the AVR-1613 and other networked receivers from the company. It does the job, but it has a very confusing UI?it took plenty of tapping and head-scratching to figure out where everything was. Yamaha's free iOS app is much more thoughtfully designed, although actual functionality differences between the two are less than they appear once you figure out where Denon hid the source select, DSP modes, and other playback and setup controls.

All told, the Denon AVR-1613 makes a solid centerpiece to a proper home theater system in 2012. But thanks to its lack of Wi-Fi and its rudimentary display graphics, there's a bit of a disconnect between 1980s and 1990s-style home theater components, and the complex, fragmented world that is music listening today. So while the AVR-1613 could use more refinement, it's impressively well specified otherwise, and should let you do just about anything you'd want with a home theater setup today.

Egyptian president-elect Mohamed Morsi spent seven years in the United States, from 1978 to 1985, as an engineering student and then assistant professor. Two professors remembered him fondly as a quiet man who was not particularly political or religious.

In the days since Mohamed Morsi was named president-elect of Egypt, two narratives have emerged about the 60-year-old engineer.

The first paints Morsi as an anti-American, anti-woman, anti-Christian and anti-Israel enforcer for the Muslim Brotherhood who will, despite his claims, turn back the clock in Egypt.

The second narrative, supported by two engineering professors from Egypt who knew Morsi when he was an engineering student and professor in California for seven years from 1978 to 1985, depicts a quiet, hardworking young man more driven by studies than politics.

Professor Nagi El Naga, who knew Morsi as an assistant professor in engineering at California State University Northridge, described his former colleague as kind, open-minded and conservative. At the time, Morsi was 30, with a wife and two young, U.S.-born children. His wife covered her hair with a veil; El Naga?s wife, a professor, did not.

?He was somewhat more conservative than me as far as religion, but there?s a difference between being conservative and being extremist,? said El Naga, who still teaches at Northridge. ?He was open-minded. We had differences but these differences never prevented us from sharing dinner and things like that.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell examines the obstacles ahead for President-elect Mohammed Morsi of Egypt.

?He was not irrational,? El Naga continued. ?He was sincere in what he believed in.?

Morsi has been described as the accidental candidate; in April, he replaced Khairat El-Shater, the Muslim Brotherhood?s more charismatic and effusive choice who was deemed ineligible to run. Morsi became the chairman of the Freedom and Justice Party, a group with ties to the Brotherhood that emerged after the 2011 revolution. He was an independent member of parliament from 2000 to 2005.

Egypt's Morsi goes from prisoner to president

He won the election with 51 percent of the vote, edging out Ahmed Shafiq, who was viewed as an extension of former President Hosni Mubarak?s regime. Mubarak resigned in February of 2011 after 30 years in control. ?

Affable, hardworking
Professor Farghalli Mohamed of University of California said he was surprised to see his former graduate student join the Muslim Brotherhood. He said Morsi prayed five times a day and observed Ramadan, but did not discuss religion or politics, nor did he grow a light beard, as did the more devout Muslim students.

Rather, Mohamed remembers Morsi as an affable, hardworking and unmarried young man who joined his family at their home and on outings to the Magic Mountain amusement park.

Beaten candidate, under graft probe, leaves Egypt

?I saw students from the Middle East at the time whose views were very conservative, who didn?t like what they saw in America in terms of social values -- they didn?t like the dress code of women,? Mohamed said. ?When you visit them in their house, they are very conservative. Usually you don?t see their wives. But Mohamed Morsi, he met with my wife, and my wife doesn?t (wear a veil).?

In 1985, Morsi traveled to Egypt and never returned to California.

El Naga and Mohamed, who have lost touch with Morsi, have?differing theories on why Egypt's president-elect joined the Brotherhood.

Mohamed believes Morsi would not have joined the Brotherhood had he returned to Cairo to teach, rather than taking a position at a small university in the more conservative northern part of Egypt.

El Naga, however, believes that Morsi joined the Brotherhood because he shared one of their values: to fight corruption in the Mubarak regime. ??

Morsi quits Muslim Brotherhood after election

When El Naga heard Morsi speak on Sunday, he said he believed the new president?s claims that he would unify the country.

?When I saw him talking it brought me back to many years back,? El Naga said. ?I felt he was the same person I was with 30 years ago.?

Mohamed was less enthusiastic.

?I feel sad for Morsi,? he said. ?He was elected as president -- that is great -- but at the moment it is vague for him. He has no constitution on which to rely on to govern the country. There is no Congress, and then the military council is still in control.?

AAA Predicts Increase in Travel for ... - Auto Rental News

According to AAA, there will be a 4.9% increase in holiday travel compared to last year with 42.3 million Americans planning to travel 50 miles or more during the Independence Day holiday weekend.

With the Fourth of July falling on a Wednesday, the traditional five-day travel period for the holiday is expanded to six days. Travelers this year have the option to include two weekdays and a weekend as part of their vacation. In fact, 54% of travelers intend to begin their trip between June 29 and July 1.

Gas prices are 16 cents lower than they were last year driving 35.5 million people to travel by car, a 4% increase from 2011. Car rental rates decreased from last year to an average $40 per day, as well.

According to AAA?s Leisure Travel Index, airfares have remained the same for the 3.2 million travelers flying to their destination this year. Hotel rates increased from a year ago with travelers spending an average of $164 per night compared to $157 last year.

?AAA?s projection for a decade high number of Independence Day travelers is being fed by Americans? appetite for travel, a mid-week holiday and lower gas prices,? said AAA Travel Services VP Bill Sutherland. ?This is the second holiday this year where travelers indicated a determination to travel while economizing by actively seeking value-added travel options and activities.?

Most commonly mutated gene in cancer may have a role in stroke

ScienceDaily (June 22, 2012) ? The gene p53 is the most commonly mutated gene in cancer. p53 is dubbed the "guardian of the genome" because it blocks cells with damaged DNA from propagating and eventually becoming cancerous. However, new research led by Ute M. Moll, M.D., Professor of Pathology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and colleagues, uncovers a novel role for p53 beyond cancer in the development of ischemic stroke. The research team identified an unexpected critical function of p53 in activating necrosis, an irreversible form of tissue death, triggered during oxidative stress and ischemia.

The findings are detailed online in Cell.

Ischemia-associated oxidative damage leads to irreversible necrosis which is a major cause of catastrophic tissue loss. Elucidating its signaling mechanism is of paramount importance. p53 is a central cellular stress sensor that responds to multiple insults including oxidative stress and is known to orchestrate apoptotic and autophagic types of cell death. However, it was previously unknown whether p53 can also activate oxidative stress-induced necrosis, a regulated form of cell death that depends on the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (PTP) pore.

"We identified an unexpected and critical function of p53 in activating necrosis: In response to oxidative stress in normal healthy cells, p53 accumulates in the mitochondrial matrix and triggers the opening of the PTP pore at the inner mitochondrial membrane, leading to collapse of the electrochemical gradient and cell necrosis," explains Dr. Moll. "p53 acts via physical interaction with the critical PTP regulator Cyclophylin D (CypD). This p53 action occurs in cultured cells and in ischemic stroke in mice. "

Of note, they found in their model that when the destructive p53-CypD complex is blocked from forming by using Cyclosporine-A type inhibitors, the brain tissue is strongly protected from necrosis and stroke is prevented.

"The findings fundamentally expand our understanding of p53-mediated cell death networks," says Dr. Moll. "The data also suggest that acute temporary blockade of the destructive p53-CypD complex with clinically well-tolerated Cyclosporine A-type inhibitors may lead to a therapeutic strategy to limit the extent of an ischemic stroke in patients."

"p53 is one of the most important genes in cancer and by far the most studied," says Yusuf A. Hannun, M.D., Director of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook. "Therefore, this discovery by Dr. Moll and her colleagues in defining the mechanism of a new p53 function and its importance in necrotic injury and stoke is truly spectacular."

Dr. Moll has studied p53 for 20 years in her Stony Brook laboratory. Her research has led to numerous discoveries about the function of p53 and two related genes. For example, previous to this latest finding regarding p53 and stroke, Dr. Moll identified that p73, a cousin to p53, steps in as a tumor suppressor gene when p53 is lost and can stabilize the genome. She found that p73 plays a major developmental role in maintaining the neural stem cell pool during brain formation and adult learning. Her work also helped to identify that another p53 cousin, called p63, has a critical surveillance function in the male germ line and likely contributed to the evolution of humans and great apes, enabling their long reproductive periods.

Dr. Moll's Cell study coauthors include: Angelina V. Vaseva and Natalie D. Marchenko, Department of Pathology, Stony Brook University School of Medicine; Kyungmin Ji and Stella E. Tsirka, Department of Pharmacological Sciences, Stony Brook University School of Medicine; and Sonja Holzmann, Department of Molecular Oncology, University of Gottingen in Germany.

?The Gay Parents Study,? a dialogue between William Saletan and?Mark Regnerus. Following the publication of Regnerus? gay parents study and the subsequent critique and defense by Saletan, the two continued the discussion in an open, five-part dialogue. In Part I, Regnerus defends the study?s findings by explaining the statistical background of the study. In Part 2, Saletan questions whether the study?s financers have manipulated the data to match their own political agenda. Regnerus responds in Part 3 by asserting that the study has little power over how their financial backers present the data on their website. Saletan summarizes the major questions the study and its data has brought to life in Part 4 and concludes by asking Regnerus whether he has changed his mind about the study and its findings. In Part 5, Regnerus concludes that gay and lesbian households in America are too diverse to be defined by a simple image.

Super-social spaceman shares his story

NASA via Twitpic

NASA astronaut Ron Garan looks into the camera from outside the International Space Station in July 2011. "Knocking on the door to come back in #FromSpace after yesterday's spacewalk," Garan wrote on Twitpic.

By Alan Boyle

You might think it's cool enough that NASA astronaut Ron Garan has spent months aboard the International Space Station, but he?s become even better-known as a social-media maven. This month he passed the 2 million mark for Google+ circles, putting him at No. 21 on the Google+ Top 100. His Fragile Oasis postings are a highlight on the Web, Facebook and Twitter. His "Ask Me Anything" exchange with Reddit users went so well he's thinking of doing it again.

So what's the secret to his success? It's really not a secret at all: He?s got a good story to share, about the beauty and fragility of planet Earth.

The 50-year-old New York native is a former Air Force fighter pilot who has degrees in business economics and aerospace engineering. He joined the astronaut corps in 2000, and his training for spaceflight included a turn as an "aquanaut" for NASA's NEEMO underwater research mission in 2006. Garan has been up in space twice ? in 2008, on the shuttle Discovery to help deliver Japan's Kibo lab to the International Space Station; and just last year for a nearly six-month tour of duty on the station.

Garan says another stint on the space station is "always a possibility, down the road." But right now, he's focusing on NASA's Open Government Initiative, which aims to build stronger collaborative ties between government, industry and the general public. That means social engagement isn't just something he does in his spare time. It's part of his job.

During a recent interview, Garan talked about how he became a super-social spaceman, and what he's learned from the adventure. Here are some edited excerpts of the Q&A:

Cosmic Log: When you come into contact with the public, what do you find they?re most curious about?

Garan:?"Well, what they?re most curious about is the basic question of what life is like, living in space. It really is a marvelous experience. It?s very interesting in a lot of respects ? and probably the greatest part about it is that it gave me an incredible sense of appreciation for what we have here on our planet. Everything from just simple things that define the beauty of life on our planet ? the breeze in your face, and the smell of flowers, watching a flock of birds and a million other things. After you?re up there for a while, those are things that?you really start to miss.

"I had the opportunity to have a short-duration flight on the space shuttle Discovery back in 2008, during which I was up there for two weeks, and then a long-term one where I was up for five and a half months. And it?s a very different experience. You have the same views, you have the same environment that you live in. But being able to see the earth, day in and day out, and watch the earth change ... and to really start to miss some of the things that I took for granted, that really gives you that appreciation."

A fish-eye view of the International Space Station, captured by Ron Garan last July, features the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer in the foreground. A Russian Progress cargo ship and a Soyuz crew capsule are docked on the left end of the station. The structure extending to the left of the AMS is a thermal radiator. One of the station's gold-colored solar arrays is visible in the background. And off to the right, the shuttle Atlantis is docked to the station's Tranquility module.

Q: So how did the Fragile Oasis website enter into the mix?

A:?"That came out of my shuttle mission in 2008. I had a little bit of frustration. I imagine it?s like when you go to the Grand Canyon, and you?re there by yourself, and you sit there at the rim of the Grand Canyon and you?re looking out over this amazing thing. And imagine that very, very few people have been able to have that experience. For me, at least, that would be frustrating, and the experience would not be as rich as it would be if I had the opportunity to share that with people. So I was frustrated during my shuttle mission that I couldn?t share the experience.

"When I got assigned to my long-duration mission, there?s two and a half years of training, and during that two and a half years, I really brainstormed how I could do that. We came up with Fragile Oasis, not just to have it as a website where we could tell stories about space, but the goal was always to provide a platform for people to follow along on the mission, not as spectators but as fellow crew members. To have an interactive way to do it.

"We had some significant technical challenges in getting that thing off the ground, and it?s still a work in progress. It doesn?t have a lot of the interactive features that we wanted it to have, but we?re working on it. When I launched to the International Space Station, and I had the five and a half months up there, I really was very thankful that I had this tool, this platform, to be able to communicate. And in the meantime, we had the exponential increase in the popularity of social media tools.

"First I did Facebook, but I didn't see that as a public outreach tool. I saw that as a way to connect with old friends, and I was just using it on a personal basis. On the other hand, I started Twitter for one reason: I saw it as a way to do education outreach. I could say, I?m learning about this experiment we?re going to be doing in space, and I?d put a link on there to the experiment's website and the science behind it. I saw that as a very powerful way to do outreach. I now see the benefits of outreach in other platforms as well, including Facebook and obviously Google+. In the case of Google+, I see a very robust mechanism to share the space program and the experience of living in space with a lot of interactive features on that platform."

Q: With all your experience in social media, do you find that you favor one tool over the other? From your comments, it sounds as if you?re seeing some differentiation in how those different tools can be used. Particularly with Google+, you just recently passed the 2-million-follower mark. That must be one of the big successes for your efforts.

A:?"Well, I think all the platforms offer slightly different tools to tell the story. I think they all fit together really well, actually. So it?s not a 'one-platform' type of message. We want to reach the broadest audience we can, because the excitement of spaceflight is global. It?s for all humanity. So the more tools we can use to tell that story, and the more people we can get involved with the story, the better off the whole message will be."

Q: Did you have to do a selling job with NASA to do the sorts of things you?re doing?

A:?"It took a while to catch on, but it?s catching on now across the board. We realize the benefit of social media. I?m on some social-media committees now, on some working groups to help not only crew members and astronauts, but also thousands of other people who work in the space program. They have a very compelling story as well. We?re trying to find the best way to get that story out. And what we?re finding is that just letting people tell their story in the way they want to tell it is the best way to do it.

"Obviously, there have to be guidelines. But the more leeway we can give people in the space program to tell their story, the richer the experience will be, both for the people who are reading it and for the people who are doing it. That?s one of the cardinal rules here, to give people as much leeway as we possibly can."

Q: Are there any guidelines or favorites that you want to pass along to people who want to be closer in touch with the space adventure?

A:?"Oh, yeah. There are tons and tons of people. Most of the astronauts who fly in space right now have Twitter accounts. They?re all on there. There?s also @NASA_Astronauts, where we try to retweet, as best we can, everything from all the astronauts. There?s @NASA, the official Twitter account. There?s the Facebook version, and soon the Google+ version of all these as well. There?s commercial spaceflight: @SpaceX has a social media presence. There are people outside the space agency who are involved in telling the story as well, such as @YurisNight and #spacetweeps.

"What we?re finding through this is that it?s not just the official word from NASA, the European Space Agency and the Japanese space agency. There are citizen scientists and all these other groups that have formed around the idea of space exploration, and they really do a great job of telling the story as well. It?s obvious that there?s a lot of passion and heart and soul that?s put into this."

Q: Is there something about the space story that particularly resonates with social media?

A:?"I think it?s because it?s a human endeavor, and throughout the 50 years of human spaceflight, it?s always been a select few people who have gotten to fly in space, and we?ve relied on them to come back and tell us what it was like. Now, through technology and through these new platforms, we can bring people along with us on the missions and have them experience this is real time. You can see example after example of this.

"An easy example is, if one of us sends out a tweet with a picture, let?s say, and we misidentify the geographic location, we?re going to find out about that pretty fast. That happened to me on my mission, and I thanked the person who brought that to my attention. I started sending pictures to that person first, to make sure I got it right. We don?t have a lot of time up there, and all the pictures and all the social media that we do is in our free time. So to have people on the ground, crowdsourcing or open-sourcing or however you want to put it, that really empowers us to do more. It makes communication much more effective."

Q: Have you ever thought if it would be possible to boil down the glory of space down into one tweet? Is there any elevator talk you?ve thought about giving in 140 characters, about what it?s like to fly in space?

A:?"You?d need at least 147 characters to do that ... no. I know I couldn?t do it. That would be a pretty remarkable feat."

Q: What?s the one thing that you?d like people to know about spaceflight.

A:?"In 140 characters?"

Q: Not 140 characters, but what?s the one biggest message that you think the space experience provides for people on Earth?

A:?"Well,? to go back to the reason we started Fragile Oasis: The really compelling reason is that we wanted to use this perspective we have on the planet to inspire people to go out and make a difference, and make the world a better planet. The one gift that I think we get when we fly in space is this perspective.

"You don't necessarily have to be in space to get this perspective, but being in space really reinforces it: You see how fragile the planet is. You see how beautiful it is, how peaceful it looks. Then you realize that life is not as beautiful for everybody on the planet as it looks from space. That's a very compelling thing to experience, and hopefully it serves as a call to action, to not accept the status quo and make life on the planet as beautiful as it looks. That's the No. 1 thing that I want to get across."

NASA

The International Space Station looks like little more than a speck with solar panels in this picture, which was taken from the shuttle Atlantis during its approach on July 10. A first-quarter moon shines on the right side of the frame.

Where in the Cosmos
Garan and his colleagues at Fragile Oasis offer a cornucopia of outer-space imagery and blog postings, including this picture of the International Space Station and the moon, as seen from the shuttle Atlantis during its approach for docking last July. The photo served as today's quiz picture in the "Where in the Cosmos" contest, presented weekly on the Cosmic Log Facebook page.

Len Whitney's comment was my favorite: "I believe it's a TIE fighter ... but those are short-range fighters, we're too far out in space ... Must have taken off from that moon ... Wait a second ... that's no moon!!!! It's a space station!"

For figuring out so quickly that the picture showed a moon and a space station, I'm sending 3-D glasses to Facebook followers Matt Jaworski and Lawrence Johnson. I'm also reserving a pair for Whitney. To make sure you're in on next week's contest, click the "like" button on the Cosmic Log Facebook page and join the alliance. It's not a trap!
