Baghdad bombs kill 19, police battle suicide attackers

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Twin car bombs hit central Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least 19 people, and security forces fought off a separate attack inside a police station by two suicide bombers trying to free al Qaeda prisoners.

The major assault underscored the seriousness of Iraq's struggle with insurgents more than seven months after the last U.S. troops left behind a country still grappling with political instability and sectarian tensions.

Clouds of dark smoke rose above the centre of the capital where the car bombs exploded minutes apart, leaving the dead and wounded lying in the street or slumped inside a damaged minibus, witnesses and police said.

As security forces began to help the victims, at least two suicide bombers dressed as police officers got into a nearby police station, where al Qaeda prisoners were being held, and tried to free them, two security sources said.

It was unclear how many people had been killed or wounded in the assault, but both bombers had been killed, one security official said.

"Their aim was to take hostages in order to release major al-Qaeda prisoners," one senior security source said. "Most officers went to the floor above them to fight them, which is why they failed."

The attack coincides with a surge in violence in Iraq and comes as bloodshed in neighboring Syria is escalating. Iraqi officials have warned that some Sunni Muslim insurgents are heading to Syria and al Qaeda's local Iraqi affiliate has called on its followers to intensify their campaign.

Al Qaeda's Iraqi wing, Islamic State of Iraq, was badly weakened by the loss of top commanders in the war against U.S. troops, but the insurgents have carried out at least one major assault a month since the U.S. withdrawal in December.

BLOOD-STAINED SHIRTS

Three young men in blood-stained T-shirts searched for a friend near the wreckage of one of Tuesday's car bomb blasts in Baghdad as women in traditional abaya gowns screamed the name of a missing relative, a Reuters reporter at the scene said.

"We were in a patrol when we heard the first explosion. The second explosion hit another square, and we went to help ... There was a minibus with six dead passengers inside it," said Ahmed Hassan, a police officer.

The explosions followed attacks and bombings in Baghdad and across the country on July 23 that killed more than 100 people in a coordinated surge of violence against mostly Shi'ite Muslim targets. Islamic State of Iraq claimed responsibility.

Overall levels of violence have eased since sectarian killings reached their height in 2006-2007 when tens of thousands of Sunnis and Shi'ites were slain.

However, Al Qaeda still often targets Shi'ite pilgrims or religious sites in an attempt to stir up sectarian tensions and to show that Iraq's armed forces are unable to protect civilians.

Last month was one of the bloodiest since the U.S. withdrawal, with at least 237 people killed and 603 wounded.

Iraq's violence often feeds into political tensions.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a Shi'ite, is fending off attempts by Sunni and Kurdish rivals to vote him out of office, threatening to scuttle a fragile power-sharing agreement.

Prostate cancer surgery once again found to be useless at saving lives, but successful at destroying sexual health

(NaturalNews) Most men who undergo surgery for prostate cancer derive absolutely no benefit from the treatment, and instead become twice as likely to develop incontinence or impotence compared to men who skip the surgery. These are the eye-opening findings of a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), which reaffirms once again that prostate cancer surgery is basically just medical quackery.

For his study, Dr. Timothy Wilt of the University of Minnesota (UM) School of Medicine evaluated 731 men diagnosed with prostate cancer, some of whom were told to have their prostates removed, and some of whom were told to simply undergo routine observation by their doctors. All the men were tracked and monitored in the years following their initial diagnosis.

10 years after their tumors were first discovered, 5.8 percent of the men who underwent prostate surgery ended up dying, while 8.4 percent of the men who were monitored apart from surgery ended up dying. According to the data, 47 percent of the men who underwent surgery died during the actual study, while 50 percent of the men who were monitored apart from surgery died during the study.

After accounting for a margin of statistical error, the findings reveal that, regardless of whether or not a man diagnosed with prostate cancer undergoes surgery, his chances of dying are roughly the same as if he does nothing. But men who choose to forgo surgery are half as likely to suffer from urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction.

"We think our results apply to the vast majority of men diagnosed with prostate cancer today," said Dr. Wilt to the Chicago Tribune. He and others in the field of oncology are realizing that most men who receive prostate cancer surgery do not need it, and that undergoing this treatment could lead to other, often permanent, side effects and complications.

Since the risk of dying from prostate cancer among those diagnosed with the condition is a mere three percent, opting for surgery, as many men do, is more often than not a mistake. Worse, many detected prostate tumors are not even malignant, a fact that, if more widely known, would probably deter many men from choosing invasive surgery.

Prevailing thoughts about cancer; however, seem to often override logical consideration and decision-making, as many men rush in to "do something" without fully evaluating the risks and benefits. This is also true in regards to the prostate cancer screenings, which have similarly been shown to be unreliable, and to often result in needless surgery and other treatments.

Riders rescued after being stranded atop California roller coaster

A dozen riders were stranded for nearly two hours atop a newly-built roller coaster in California before the ride was repaired and rolled the amusement park goers safely to the ground.

The Superman Ultimate Flight roller coaster stopped at about 2:30 p.m. PST Sunday at the top of the ride, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom spokeswoman Nancy Chan told the Vallejo Times-Herald.

Local Firefighters were called in and used a special crane and bucket to bring water to the stranded riders. The contraption could have been used to bring down the roller coaster riders if the coaster wasn't restarted, Vallejo Fire Department? Battalion Chief Ray Jackson said.

But eventually, the workers got the cars unstuck and they rolled backwards along the tracks to the ground.

There were no injuries reported.

It was unclear what caused the two-car train to stop.

"If (a ride) stops, it usually detects something and it stops for safety reasons," Chan said.

Chan told the Times-Herald that the ride will be closed for a thorough safety inspection and the ride will reopen when the inspection is completed, at an undetermined time.

The ride, which opened June 30 at the Vallejo theme park, can travel at up to 62 mph. It? holds two cars with six riders each. Parts of the ride include the cars being tilted upside down.

Luckily, the riders weren't stuck in that position.

It's unclear if A&E will nix the show completely or attempt find a new department to work with, but for better or worse, Larpenter's crew won't be on it.

Season 1 will finish as planned; beyond that, it's unclear.

Jeremy Lin lands in Houston

HOUSTON (AP) ? Jeremy Lin and his new Rockets teammate Chandler Parsons went out to dinner the night before Lin's introductory news conference in Houston.

Parsons quickly realized that "Linsanity" had left New York and landed in Texas.

The two were interrupted on Wednesday night 15 to 20 times, by Parsons' estimate, by fans who recognized Lin and wanted an autograph or a photo. Parsons, who played in all but three games for Houston last season, was virtually ignored.

"I was a little insulted," Parsons said. "But that's exciting. You want someone like that on your team to bring fans, you want sold-out games. You want the attention like that. The more attention he has, the more attention the Houston Rockets have."

And Lin will certainly bring it.

The Rockets introduced Lin on Thursday on the practice court at the Toyota Center ? the court where Lin worked in virtual anonymity seven months ago before he was waived ? to accommodate a massive media contingent.

Lin, a 23-year-old undrafted point guard out of Harvard, became a Rocket again when the New York Knicks decided not to match Houston's three-year, $25 million offer.

"It's been an unbelievable ride," Lin said. "Just a lot of things I didn't expect to happen, in terms of just the way last season went. I still have to kind of remind myself that this is all actually happening, sometimes. But it's a huge blessing. I can't believe how it all shaped up, and for me to be here right now. I'm definitely excited and thankful."

Lin said he expected to be re-signed by the Knicks after he electrified the Big Apple last season before he was sidelined by a knee injury. Shortly after the Knicks officially declined to match, Lin was quoted on SI.com as saying, "Honestly, I preferred New York."

Lin said the question he answered was set in the context of before the start of the free agency period.

"The question was, 'Going into free agency, which team did you prefer?'" Lin said. "Before July 1, I didn't even know what teams were interested in me. But all I was hearing was, 'You're going back to New York.' At that time, before free agency started, I preferred New York. By the time it came to the offer sheet, I was just excited about both opportunities.

"Houston and New York," he said, "I was definitely excited about the possibility to go to both."

But probably not as excited as the Rockets were to get him back.

Houston has missed the playoffs the last three seasons, and when Linsanity skyrocketed in New York, general manager Daryl Morey was kicking himself for waiving Lin on Christmas Eve. When Lin hit a winning 3-pointer in Toronto on Valentine's Day, team owner Leslie Alexander called Morey to tersely ask him again why Lin was no longer a Rocket.

"People are making a lot of us admit to our mistake," Morey said. "But the only way to get better is to quickly say, 'That was a mistake. How can we do better next time?'"

At the time Lin was released, the Rockets had Goran Dragic and Kyle Lowry on the roster ? two point guards with NBA experience. And who knew what Linsanity would become?

"We had very fair reasons to waive him," Morey said. "But the reality is, we shouldn't have."

When Linsanity took hold in New York, jerseys with Lin's name became the NBA's top sellers. He made the cover of Sports Illustrated in consecutive weeks and had drinks named for him. He was initially overwhelmed by the media glare, but now he takes it in stride.

"This past year, it took me by surprise and it was just this huge storm," Lin said. "It was kind of baptism by fire. You get thrown into it and you've just got to make adjustments and learn. That's a lot of what I had to do."

While Alexander said the decision to pursue Lin was "all basketball," he acknowledged that he could potentially impact the Rockets' brand in the way that Yao Ming did, expanding its reach in Asia. But that depends on how good Lin becomes and if the team improves along with him.

Lin is American-born, but of Chinese and Taiwanese descent, and the number of Chinese media at the news conference was about equal to the American contingent.

"If you don't win, what difference does it make?" Alexander said. "If you get him, and he's not a very good player, you look like a fool. How does that help you in any way?"

On the court all Houston really needed was a point guard. The Rockets lost the unrestricted free agent Dragic to Phoenix, then dealt Lowry to Toronto for a first-round pick ? a selection made more valuable because it has lottery protection.

Lin averaged 14.6 points and 6.2 assists in 35 games (25 starts) for the Knicks last season. His aim is to improve his statistics every year, but he wouldn't venture to guess how good they could get.

"I don't know what my ceiling is. I don't know what my potential is," he said. "We don't know what the ending is going to be. But I'm excited to find out."

6 killed in chain-reaction crash in NY work zone

ANTWERP, N.Y. (AP) ? An SUV burst into flames and six people were killed on a northern New York road Thursday when a tractor-trailer rear-ended a vehicle in a work zone and caused a chain-reaction crash, police said.

Five of the people killed were trapped in an SUV when it was struck and burst into flames. State police identified the driver as Laurie Dana, 42, an elementary school speech therapist from Lawrence, a rural town about 60 miles northwest of the crash site and 15 miles south of the Canadian border. Also in the vehicle were her two daughters, Catelyn, 14, and Lauren, 11, and her mother-in-law, Janet Dana, 69. The fifth victim was Shannon Planty, 14, a friend of Catelyn.

Trooper Jack Keller said the vehicle had stopped or was moving slowly because of road repaving on Route 11 in the Jefferson County town of Antwerp. The tractor-trailer slammed into the back of one vehicle, causing collisions with a state Department of Transportation truck and the SUV.

Keller said the driver of the first vehicle, Maryann Gregory, 59, of Dickinson Center in Franklin County, died at a hospital.

Tractor-trailer driver James A. Mills Jr. of Myerstown, Pa., was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The DOT truck driver, 54-year-old Lewis Lottie Jr. of Nicholville, was flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with head and chest injuries, Keller said. He was in critical condition Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened near Fort Drum, 85 miles northeast of Syracuse. The site is on a straight, flat section of the two-lane road, the main east-west highway across four rural northern counties along the Canadian border. There were plenty of signs warning motorists that crews were working on the road, Keller said.

The tractor-trailer "plowed right into them," he said by telephone from the scene. "We're trying to determine what happened."

Michael Countryman told the Watertown Daily Times that he ran outside after hearing the loud crash and saw a vehicle engulfed in flames.

"On the other side of a tractor-trailer I saw a woman upside-down in her car; I reached in and felt a pulse ? barely," he told the paper.

The vehicle's gas tank also was leaking, he said. Countryman said he broke out a side window of Gregory's Subaru with a hatchet. He said he and an emergency medical technician talked to the woman, but she didn't respond.

"He handed me scissors to cut the shoulder strap, then we picked her up and put her on a board," Countryman said.

Signage on the tractor-trailer indicates it is owned by MBM Customized Foodservice Distribution based in Rocky Mount, N.C. A company spokeswoman didn't immediately return a call seeking comment. Keller said the truck was hauling a full load of yogurt from a plant in North Lawrence in neighboring Franklin County.

The federal National Transportation Safety Board was notified but investigators were not going to the crash scene, a spokesman for the agency said.

Laurie Dana and her mother-in-law lived on the same stretch of Route 11 and frequently did things together, said Joyce Sheppard, who has lived two houses away from Laurie Dana for the past four years. The Dana family has a dairy operation and Sheppard's retired husband sometimes helps out.

"A very nice family," she said Thursday evening. "They were very friendly with us. She gave us a Christmas basket last year, which was nice."

Janet Dana's husband Don stopped by the Sheppard house to break the news to their neighbors.

"I'm sorry," Sheppard said. "We're overwhelmed."

Sheppard saw Laurie Dana drive by just ahead of her Thursday morning, on her way to pick up Janet Dana.

"I feel terrible because I saw them and didn't wave or anything," she said. "They were just going on their way."

Sheppard said Catelyn and Lauren were "beautiful little girls."

She expects the community will rally around the family.

"We're just trusting in the lord," she said. "That's all we can do for now."

Stephen Putnam, superintendent of schools in the Brasher Falls Central School District, where Laurie Dana worked and her daughters went to school, said, "It's difficult for the staff and students."

He said counselors would be at the elementary school on Friday for any students who wanted to come in.
