Shell moves step closer to oil exploring off Alaska

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell will soon get a temporary air permit to operate a drilling rig offshore Alaska, the Environmental Protection Agency said, helping the company move closer to its long-delayed goal of exploring for oil in the Arctic.

The EPA plans to issue an air permit for Shell's Discoverer drilling rig as soon as this weekend, a source at the bureau said on Friday.

A compliance order the EPA will issue expires in a year and will not waive any of Shell's permit requirements or any air quality standards, the agency said. Any proposed revisions to the permit will be subject to full public review and comment.

Shell has spent about $4.5 billion on its effort to drill Arctic oil, but the company has run into problems.

On Thursday the Department of the Interior allowed Shell to begin some "limited" drilling in the offshore Chukchi region, that is only navigable for a few months a year.

The company is still waiting for its oil-spill containment barge, the Arctic Challenger, to be approved by the Coast Guard. Without the containment system, Interior said it will not allow Shell to proceed.

In light of the delays, Shell has asked the government to extend its oil drilling season beyond the September 24 deadline.

Shell could not be immediately reached for comment.

A U.S.-Israel Collaboration in Computer Science

The National Science Foundation (NSF), together with the United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF), today announced the U.S.-Israel Collaboration in Computer Science (USICCS), which seeks to support collaborative research projects that ?develop new knowledge? in foundational areas of computer science, including the theory of computing and the foundations of software design and systems. In particular, through this program, ?U.S.-based researchers will receive funds from NSF to support travel to Israel to interact with their Israeli counterparts.? Proposals are due by Feb. 1, 2013.

USICCS supports transformative research in the following areas of theoretical computer science and the foundations of software design and systems:

Theoretical Computer Science

The USICCS program supports potentially transformative research projects advancing the design and analysis of algorithms and characterized by algorithmic thinking accompanied by rigorous analysis. Research on algorithms for problems that are central to computer science and new techniques for the rigorous analysis of algorithms are of interest. USICCS supports theoretical research that bounds the intrinsic difficulty of problems to determine the measures of complexity in formal models of computation, classical or new. The goal is to understand the fundamental limits of resource-bounded computation and to obtain efficient solutions within those limits. Specifically, the time and space complexity of finding exact and approximate solutions in deterministic and randomized models of computation is a central concern of the program.

Research on resource usage other than time and space, such as communication complexity and energy cost, is also encouraged. In addition to the traditional sequential computing paradigm, USICCS supports research on the design and analysis of novel algorithms in parallel and distributed models, in particular, in heterogeneous multi-core and many core machines; the computational models and algorithms that capture essential aspects of computing over massive data sets; game theory; and alternative forms of computation and information processing, including quantum computing and biological models of computation.

The program supports research in algorithms needed in all areas, both within and outside computer science. Algorithmic research with applications in databases, information retrieval, machine learning, data mining, natural language processing, networks, communications, operating systems, languages, compilers, and machine abstractions is supported. New techniques for the design and analysis of algorithms in areas such as cryptography, computational geometry, computational biology, game theory and numerical, symbolic, and algebraic computing are appropriate for this program.

Software Foundations

USICCS supports research projects on the science of design, verification, operation, utilization, and evaluation of computer systems through novel approaches, robust theories, high-leverage tools, and lasting principles. Such advances may offer models, methods, languages, logics, novel software artifacts, algorithms to enable new or enhanced functionality, and formal methods and tools for the design, implementation, and verification of computer systems and their applications.

The USICCS program seeks transformative ideas that reformulate the relationship between requirements, design, and evolution of software and software-intensive systems. The program welcomes research projects focusing on program analysis and synthesis, compositionality, verifiability and certifiability of software, as well as research on static, dynamic, functional and non-functional analysis and testing techniques in all stages of the software life cycle. USICCS supports fundamental research on formal and semi-formal methods for the specification, development, and verification of software systems. The program seeks proposals that enhance the applicability, usability, and efficiency of techniques such as model checking, theorem proving, automated decision procedures, static analysis and constraint solving. Research topics involving the semantics, logics, verification, and analysis of concurrent systems are welcome. USICCS supports the entire range of programming language and compiler research, ranging from foundations to design to implementation and application, including new approaches to languages and compilers for parallel and concurrent programming.

Adobe to bring Retina support to Photoshop CS6 and more "this fall"

Adobe has finally elaborated and expanded upon their previous pledge of bringing Photoshop to the Retina MacBook Pro "this year", bringing the target date down to a more proximate "this fall". And what's more, it won't just be Photoshop CS6 that's getting the Retina -- or more generically, HiDPI -- support.

In the first of two announcements, Tom Hogarty posted on the Photoshop blog.

The Photoshop and Lightroom teams are pleased to announce we will provide support for HiDPI displays in the coming months, including the Retina Display available on the new MacBook Pro. Supporting this new technology requires significant work by our product teams and we?re committed to provided a free update to all Photoshop CS6 customers this Fall and Lightroom 4 as soon as the work is complete. Please note that Creative Cloud members will receive Photoshop updates more frequently and receive this update in advance of updates for non-members. While Photoshop, Photoshop Touch and Lightroom will be joining Adobe Ideas in their support of HiDPI Retina Displays, Photoshop Elements will not fully support HiDPI displays in the immediate future however the team is investigating the effort required to support these new displays.

HiDPI support on Photoshop for the Retina MacBook Pro is something we discussed extensively on our Iterate round table podcast. Because Adobe uses custom interface elements, they're currently stuck @1x on the @2x Retina MacBook Pro, and as any iPhone 4S or iPad 3 or later user knows, standard resolution apps look noticeably worse on Retina displays than they do on standard displays. Photoshop perhaps worse than most.

Since a lot of early Retina MacBook Pro adopters are also tend to be designers and developers, or otherwise pixel-sensitive, Photoshop-using fussy, complainer types like yours truly, the sooner Adobe can get a Retina version of their app in our hands, the better. I'm using Creative Cloud now, and I'll be checking and rechecking until it arrives.

Hopefully Adobe's launch data gets even more specific, and more proximate, soon.

ESSINGTON, Pa. (AP) ? Rapper Beanie Sigel was arrested Wednesday on weapon and drug violations during a traffic stop, just two weeks before he is scheduled to report to prison for failing to file taxes, state police said.

The 38-year-old rapper, whose real name is Dwight Grant, was a passenger in a car pulled over on Interstate 95 in Tinicum Township, just south of his hometown of Philadelphia.

Police said they found a gun in the car's console. Both Sigel and driver Gerald Andrews are felons banned from having such weapons, according to troopers.

Andrews was also carrying several prescription bottles and a small amount of marijuana, police said. Sigel had more than $4,600 in cash, plus prescription pills and a bottle of codeine syrup, according to troopers.

Court records indicate Sigel and Andrews both face drug and gun charges and were unable to post bail. Sigel's lawyer declined to comment immediately, saying he had not yet reviewed the case. It was not clear if Andrews had an attorney.

Sigel's latest album, called "This Time," was released on Tuesday by Ruffhouse Records.

Chris Schwartz, the label's chief executive, said in a statement that the company is disappointed in Sigel's arrest. But he added that the rapper has displayed "the utmost professionalism in all of the initiatives related to the promotion of his new release."

"Beanie has obviously been struggling with some personal issues, and we continue to support him now and throughout his impending incarceration," Schwartz said.

Sigel is scheduled to begin a two-year prison sentence on Sept. 12 for failing to pay federal taxes. Prosecutors said he owes more than $700,000 for the tax years 1999 through 2005.

{Praying Through Life's Situations} ? In Pursuit

I have found that as a mother of a soon to be teen, things can get overwhelming if you allow them to. I have had to constantly remind myself of who I am, and Whose I am. I am a daughter of the King. I am seated in high places in Christ (Ephesians 2:6).

I?. We? are not defeated in this part of our journey. We are not left in chaos. ?We are not ?left in darkness. We, my friends, are positioned to make things happen.?Let me share with you how that worked for me this summer and how I will use what I learned to pray my son through this upcoming school year.

I was a teenage mom. As with many teenage relationships, they do not last. I was a single mom for 2 years before I came to the Lord in 2003, and for 4 years before I got married in 2004.?When my husband and I came together, we each had a son.?My husband and I have learned so much about step-parenting and God?s amazing love, grace, and restoration power throughout our last 7 years of marriage. In the near future, I will share more ?about some of the challenges, hurdles, obstacles, and victories that come with step-parenting.

But for now, I want to share how I kept myself sane and steadfast on God?s word, through another ?shared custody summer?. For us it?s simply a one week off, one week on schedule during the summer. For others, their children are away a full month, an entire summer, holidays, 6 months. The number of custody schedules out there vary dramatically.

Prayer, It?s The Number One Step

Although there are things you may not be able to change, you do have a secret weapon? it?s called prayer. What I love about prayer is that it has the ability to go places I can?t go. It has the power to change things I cannot change. It has the ability to drive out fear, worry, and anxiety. And it leaves us with peace and inexplicable joy.

This summer instead of feeling overwhelmed and thinking, ?oh-no, here we go again? an entire summer of chaos, and going back and forth?, I chose to take action. First I prayed. Then I allowed God to minister to me through His word. and He led me to these particular passages.

Psalm 16:5, ?You guard all that is mine.?

Psalm 46:2, 10, ?Though the earth be removed and the mountains fall into the sea, do not fear. Be still and know that I am God.?

Proverbs 3:5-6, ?Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.?

Making It Practical and Applicable

When I created the summer visiting calendar, I printed off a copy and ?simply numbered the days going backwards (I believe I started with number 67 or something like that) and then I numbered each day, 67, 66, 65, 64, 63, 62,61, 61? and so on until I reached the number 1, the day when our ?summer custody schedule? is over. Each day, I made a commitment to pray for my son, declare God?s word (based on the scripture He already gave me), and cross off the number I had written down. So when day 67 came, and I took time to pray, I crossed off 67. The next day, after I prayed, I would cross off the next written date, 66. And so on.

Summer is now closing, and I have two more days until I reach day 1. Looking back, I know (because I can see in front of me) that one, I?ve faithfully lifted up my child in prayer, and two, that God has guarded all that is mine!?There has been such freedom and peace in simply handing over the situation to God each day.

Here?s a close-up to give you a better idea of how the numbering worked.

This is what the calendar looked like hanging up on my kitchen board. Every time I washed dishes, I looked at it and was reminded that God guards all that is mine!!!

Simple and effective.

Take What You?ve Learned And Use It

I will be using this same idea to pray my child through his 8th grade school year. Circumstances do not allow me to homeschool him as I do my Kindergarten daughter. And so, I must continue to trust that God guards all that is mine and that He will lead and direct my son.

Before school begins in our district, September 4th, I will be doing the same thing with the school calendar. I believe there are 180 school days, so I will take the school calendar and on September 4th, I will write the number 180 in the corner. I will then number backwards all the way to the last day of the school year, which will numbered as Day 1.

I will be accountable. I will be purposeful. I will not tire in lifting my children up to the Lord. And when the enemy comes whispering his lies, I will remind him that the prayers of the righteous availeth much (James 5:16)!!

I really loved this countdown, and it could be used in so many ways:

• countdown to an important event
• countdown for the rest of the year
• countdown for a time of specific prayer for your husband
• countdown for a time of specific prayer for friends, family, pastors, church
• countdown for the new school year

What you should know about account-wide pets, mounts and - Joystiq

Patch 5.0.4 is live and most of your achievements, pets and mounts are now account-wide. The problem is that they will not all show up when you first log in. You also may find that you don't have as many of each pet as you thought you did. Here's what you should know

So if you logged in and didn't like the size of your pet and mount journal, log on to all of your characters.

It's finally here, and you'll be able to enjoy just about every mount and pet you own on any character, and any license, under a single Battle.net account. You can also work on a wide variety of Achievements from multiple characters. Please be aware of the rules and guidelines we've just posted for how you can coalesce your account-wide pets and mounts smoothly and safely.

*To see all of your achievements, pets, and mounts, you'll want to log into every character at least once.

When Patch 5.0.4 goes live in the next week, we will be implementing systems that prepare characters for the Pet Battles system that is coming with World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, and bringing account-wide non-combat pets to the game. During the patching process, non-combat pets will be migrated among your characters, with the final result being all of your non-combat pets available to all of your characters. This initial adjustment to your catalog of pets includes several changes that are worth noting.

1. There will be a limit of 500 pets, per player, that can be carried going forward.
Players will be allowed to go over the 500 pet cap during the 5.0.4 migration.
The migration will not convert more than a total of 1500 pets for a player.
Unique pets will be merged, so there will not be more than one unique pet on an account.

2. Pets that can only be used by characters of the other faction will be greyed out.
Such pets can only be summoned by characters of the proper faction.
Examples include: Balloons, Moonkin Hatchlings.
There are certain pets that will not be account-wide. Examples include: Guild Page, Guild Herald, Argent Squire, Argent Gruntling.

3. Players should not see more than one of any unique pets. Examles include: Lil' KT, Murky, and Frosty.

4. All standard pets will be merged. There will be a limit of three per type for players, but the migration can exceed this limit. Examples of standard pets: Orange Tabby Cat, Brown Prairie Dog, Crimson Whelpling.

Sony unveils latest HX950 flagship HDTV in Japan with 'Intelligent Peak LED' backlighting

While Sony's current lineup of HDTVs has so far topped out with the HX929/920 series that's been kicking around since 2011, in Japan it has just unveiled a new top of the line model: the HX950. Often rumored in the last few months, it's available in 65- or 55-inch varieties and features Sony's now-trademark monolithic style as well as "Intelligent Peak LED" backlighting. Although Sony's brand name for the tech doesn't exactly reveal how it works, information leaks have suggested it is full array LED backlighting and not edge based, although we don't know how many zones (individually controlled light sources) are in play. What we do know, however is that it claims to outperform the LED backlighting in the old 929 quite handily, although we'll let our eyes be the judge of that.

It also includes MotionFlow XR960 (800 in the US) motion processing tech that can create 240fps from 60 frames and a glass panel mounted to the LCD itself with a special type of resin designed specifically to reduce glare. Finally, there's also the usual add-ins like 3D and Sony Entertainment Network streaming video. We haven't seen any European or US information for this model yet, although with IFA 2012 under way and CEDIA coming up that may change quickly. Currently pricing in Japan for the 65-inch is expected to be around 650,000 yen or $8,269 when it ships November 10th, but we should mention actual US prices are typically much lower than a direct conversion. Unofficially, one retailer is already listing the 55- and 65-inch models for sale in the US for $3,499 and $5,499, respectively, although we'd take that with a grain of salt until we know for sure.

Bill Gates gets a potty mouth: foundation holds toilet reinvention fair

Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist, wants to talk poop. Literally. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is hosting a "Reinvent the Toilet Fair" on August 14 and 15, is on a mission to build a better crapper. Why? Poop is a worldwide problem.

Here are the dirty details: Four out of every 10 people around the globe have no where to "go." That adds up, says the foundation, to 2.5 billion people doing their business any place but in a toilet.

According to the foundation's website, poor sanitation leads to food and water tainted with fecal matter, which causes 2.5 billion cases of diarrhea in children under five and 1.5 million child deaths a year. The United Nation estimates that half of the world's hospitalizations result from bad sanitation.

The good news is that better sanitation could prevent most of those child deaths, provide safe drinking water and improve lives.

Foundation co-chair Bill Gates, who announced cash prizes at the fair today for the best designs, said in a statement, "Innovative solutions change people's lives for the better. If we apply creative thinking to everyday challenges, such as dealing with human waste, we can fix some of the world's toughest problems."

The foundation has committed $370 million to the Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WSH) initiative, which includes devising a 21st-century toilet.

What the Gates Foundation calls the toilet revolution could turn crap into stuff like fuel, fertilizer and fresh water. In October 2011, the challenge gave grants to researchers to come up with a better spin on the 18th-century porcelain toilet design. A year later, the fair is showing how far the teams have come.

Some of the ingenious ideas at the toilet fair include a Swiss system for diverting some urine and recovering water for flushing, and a design from Stanford researchers that turns human waste into charcoal. And a team from the Delft University of Technology in the the Netherlands invented a toilet that turns human waste into fuel through microwave technology.

Miner killed in violence at South Africa's Lonmin

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A worker was killed on Monday in renewed violence between rival unions at a South African mine operated by world number three platinum producer Lonmin, the head of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said.

"Early this morning one of our members was attempting to report to duty and he was killed. He was hacked to death," NUM General Secretary Frans Baleni told Reuters. "Our members are under attack."

The killing follows the murder of two security guards on Sunday by an enraged mob that attacked a facility at Lonmin's Western Platinum operation.

The violence is part of a turf war between the NUM, which has long been the labor giant in South African mining, and the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).

The latest flare-up began on Friday with an illegal strike by 3,000 rock drill operators at Lonmin's Western Platinum mine, 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, mirroring previous incidents when AMCU has tried to recruit NUM members.

Baleni said bus drivers were being intimidated into not transporting workers to Western Platinum's operations. Allegations of intimidation have marked previous struggles between the unions.

Company officials said on Sunday the mine was operating at reduced capacity but were not immediately available for comment on Monday.

AMCU General Secretary Jeff Mphahlehle told Reuters he was en route to an emergency meeting with Lonmin management on Monday and said members of his union had also been attacked.

The NUM/AMCU rivalry shut the world's largest platinum mine, run by Impala Platinum, for 6 weeks earlier this year.

MINSK, Belarus -- Police in Belarus have arrested two journalists for posing for photographs holding teddy bears after hundreds were dropped by air on the country in a pro-democracy stunt, the Belarussian Association of Journalists said Thursday.

Alexander Lukashenko, the country's authoritarian president, also suggested Thursday that the Swedish embassy in Minsk had been involved in planning the July 4 escapade, in an outburst likely to widen a diplomatic rift with Sweden over the incident.

"Those who came and prepared the violation of the state border worked together with the (Swedish) embassy. We have proof of this," Lukashenko was quoted as saying by the Belarus state news agency Belta.

The journalists' arrest and Lukashenko's accusation underlined the depth of his anger and embarrassment over the stunt and his determination to punish those he views as being responsible for it.

Belarus, Sweden kick out ambassadors as teddy bear war heats up

One of the two journalists arrested, Irina Kozlik, who works for Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, was fined 3 million Belarussian roubles (about $400) by a Minsk court on Thursday, while Yulia Doroshkevich, a press photographer, was to appear in court later in the day.

An official for the ex-Soviet republic's journalist association said that Kozlik, 27, and Doroshkevich, 31, were detained Wednesday evening in the capital Minsk.

The two women were accused of "carrying out an unsanctioned protest," Andrei Bastunets, deputy head of the association, told Reuters. "This (the fine) shows that Kozlik was recognized as being guilty of violating the laws on protests."

Teddy bear "blitz"
The July 4 stunt, in which a light aircraft chartered by a Swedish PR firm Studio Total dropped 800 toy bears carrying pro-democracy messages over Belarussian territory, prompted Lukashenko to sack his air defense and border guards chiefs and expel Sweden's ambassador.

The teddy bear "blitz" was the latest pro-democracy stunt aimed at mocking Lukashenko's iron grip on a country he has ruled since 1994, three years after the Soviet Union's break-up.

Once described as Europe's last dictator by the administration of former President George W. Bush, Lukashenko has been ostracized by the European Union and United States over a harsh crackdown on opponents who challenged his re-election in December 2010.

Last summer, opposition groups staged waves of "silent" protests in Minsk in which people engaged in synchronized public clapping and coordinated their mobile phones to ring out in unison to show their disapproval of Lukashenko's style of rule.

Diplomatic rift
With both Belarus and Sweden now pulling all their diplomats out of each other's country, the diplomatic rift has worsened Belarus's already poor relations with the West.

In comments issued by Belta news agency on Thursday, Lukashenko said Belarus still awaited an answer from Sweden and neighboring Lithuania about their role in the airdrop. The plane entered Belarussian air space from Lithuania.

"If these answers do not come according to international norms, we will find an adequate response ourselves ...," he said.

"Lithuania shouldn't sit like mice under the broom either. They have got to say why they allocated their territory for violating a state border," he added.

In a statement Thursday, the U.S. State Department said the expulsion of the Swedish diplomats only served "to deepen Belarus' self-isolation ... We again call on Belarus to immediately release and rehabilitate all political prisoners, and to put an end to the repression of civil society and the democratic opposition."

Nov. 28, 2011: Natalya Radina, editor in chief of the Charter 97 newspaper in Belarus, was severely beaten and jailed by government forces for reporting on a bloodly crackdown after rigged elections. She was awarded the International Press Freedom Award by CPJ for her courageous work.

It took more than three weeks for Belarus to formally confirm the teddy bear airdrop. It was all the more embarrassing for Lukashenko and his defense chiefs since the incident occurred a day after Independence Day, which also commemorates Minsk's World War II defense against Nazi Germany.

Strong response
In the wake of the incident, Lukashenko told the incoming border guards chief to use weapons if necessary to shoot down any future foreign intruders into Belarussian air space.

Belarus' KGB state security agency has since charged two Belarussians, Anton Suryapin and Sergei Basharimov, with complicity in the "illegal intrusion" by the Swedish plane.

Suryapin, who is aged about 20, had earlier been identified as a blogger who was arrested after the first photographs of the toy bears were published on the Internet. In the past week, some Belarussian journalists have shown solidarity with Suryapin by posing for photos on the Internet holding miniature toy bears.?

Scientists generate 281-gigapixel cell map using electron microscope

Electron microscopes can produce incredibly detailed and even 3D views of sub-cellular structures, but often at the cost of losing the bigger picture. Researchers at Liedel University in the Netherlands, however, have leveraged a technique called virtual nanoscopy that enables researchers to observe the whole of a cell and its intricate details in a single image. With the method, the team stitches together nanometer resolution photographs of what's gone under the scope to create a map with adjustable zoom a la Google Maps. Their study created a 281-gigapixel image (packed with 16 million pixels per inch) of a 1.5-millimeter-long zebrafish embryo. Google Updates Results: Small Businesses Suffer | Search Engine ...

In the last few Google updates, there have been some significant changes to how the search results are displayed. The media machine has covered these events extensively as these updates have unfolded. Because of the unique position I?m in, I have an inside look at the ranking trends of thousands of pages and keywords around the web for many small businesses of different industries.

SBA study for Small Business Statistics and Research has shown that 99.7% of small firms represent the US economy, and generated 44% of total US new jobs over the past 17 years. The study also states that Small Business makes up 50.7% of US GDP and the number continue to rise.

With the latest update from Google we all watched as online businesses shut down, consultants started advising customers to get a new domain name and start over, and an untold number of websites lost their rankings in the search results. ?Critics have claimed that the domestic impact of recent Google Updates forcing local businesses into bankruptcy because they are unable to compete with Big Brands such like Amazon and ebay.

Winning Competitive Markets

Whether directed at these businesses or not, the updates Google made in May and June have put a lot of smaller website?s out of the first page (or out of business). What we saw when testing the websites and link factors after the fallout was Google ranking the larger, internal linking, more diverse external link portfolios.

This specifically occurred in keyword verticals that could overlap or perhaps previously ?competed? with large websites. Almost across the board we see Wikipedia beating website?s that previously ranked, and in the Ecommerce space Amazon wins over niche specific web pages.

If you look closely, you?ll see Google starting to show results in favor of larger corporate businesses.

The reasons for website?s losing rankings are pretty obvious after a close look at the data on thousands of keywords. Bad page layouts without relevant information or user experience, repetitive anchor text, and sitewide backlinks all were causes for Google penalization. Even following all of the recovery plan strategies doesn?t put small businesses back in the positions they previously held.

After a few months of the analyzing the Penguin update we started to see improved rankings. This falls right in line with a later Panda update that was publicized and gives indication that Google pulled back some of the updates that shook the industry so hard. But will this algorithm stay?

Major Shifts in Google?s Business Philosophy

Google recently unveiled a major change to its shopping search engine. Starting this fall, product search results for users in the United States will be influenced by how much retailers and advertisers pay, a company executive said.

In the past, product search results were based mainly on relevance and the program was free.

Inc.com columnist Jeff Haden, who has written 40 non fiction books, recently wrote how Google is killing organic search by including a recent study that was put together by wordstream.com.
According to Larry Kim, the founder and CTO at Wordstream Inc, ?click-through rate from Google paid ads outnumbered organic listing by nearly a 2:1 ratio for commercial searches in the US.?

Interestingly enough, Google?s annual Economic Impact Report was released recently and claims to have helped provide $80 billion dollars ?economic activity to businesses in 2011. This is either a well placed piece of Online Reputation Management, or begs the question, ?What businesses? The conglomerates??

Is Google the Gatekeeper of Internet and Threatening Consumer Welfare?

Google was dubbed several times as the ?Big Brother? over the enormous power it has on information that users find. This has made Google a monopoly gatekeeper. ?Google is in position to decide who will succeed and who will fail; this has also characterized Google as the ?Biggest Kingmaker? on this earth.

The overall experience of the search results should be (and I believe Google wants it to be) good for the user. Google is/should be testing whether these updates are useful by measuring click activity and ever changing.

From what I?m seeing in the rankings, there will be more rollbacks to come. For small businesses, this means continuing to update pages with relevant content, gain traction by creating a buzz around the web and in social spaces and you?ll see your organic rankings come back.
