Interview With Denise Richards - Career, Motherhood, Body Image ...

I spent the afternoon in New York last week with long distance friend, mom, and actress?Denise Richards. We chatted over tea and scones, and then I decided to ask her some questions and find out what it?s like to be a single, working mom in the spotlight.

Denise was candid, honest and sincere about her life. I give you, our interview?

ED ? Denise, can you tell us a little about your upbringing. Did you know from a young age that you wanted to be an actress? When and how did you get that lucky break?

DR ? I grew up in a small town outside outside of Chicago. I grew up very differently than how my girls are growing up today. My mom was a stay at home mother. We were actually a Nielsen family ? we were your all around typical American family. Family of 4. Very close. My father, my sister and I were part of a father-daughter group called The Drifters. My mom had dinner on the table every night at 6 o?clock. Everything was about family growing up.

From a young age, I knew I wanted to act. But growing up in a small town, I didn?t think it would be possible living in Illinois. My dad was tired of working outdoors in the cold winters, and decided to move us to California. From there, I started modeling, then getting into acting. I started taking acting lessons, and landed a few guest spots. I was lucky- I was able to support myself even with those little jobs.

My big break was?Starship Troopers ? it was so cool. My first movie in a movie theater! From there on in, I became a working actor.

Denise Richards, Starship Troopers

ED ? Breaking into Hollywood can be an uphill battle. Were there ever moments where you felt as though your dreams were impossible? How did you stay positive and motivated in your career?

DR ? There?s always that little word called REJECTION. It happens to everyone. There were many times that I got discouraged when I didn?t get a role, but I loved what I was doing so much, it was this love that kept me motivated. I had a passion for acting, and I wouldn?t give up.

To this day, I love being on set with filmmakers, the actors, the crew. I love working. It has always been my passion that has kept me motivated through rejection. When you have a passion for something, you MUST keep at it. It sounds very simple, but I know it to be true.

ED ? What does being a single woman and mom mean to you? What advice can you offer to other single, working moms when life gets overwhelming? How do you balance it all?

Denise Richards and daughters Sami, Lola and Eloise (c/o People Magazine)

DR ? I think moms, single or not, put a lot of pressure on ourselves trying to balance it all. It?s NEVER going to be perfectly balanced- the sooner you know this, the sooner you can relieve some of the pressure you put on yourself. When you?re working, you will miss some moments with your kids. When you?re away with your husband, you?ll miss some moments at work. When you?re with the kids, you?ll miss moments there too. I think it?s about prioritizing, not about balancing. It?s more about juggling, in my opinion, than balancing. Keeping things running as smoothly as possible, and managing all those balls in the air as best as you can.

The secret to balance for me, is about living and being in the moment. Otherwise you?re simply never enjoying life ? when you?re with your kids, you?re worried about work, and so on.

About being a single mom- I don?t think of myself as a single mom. I just think of myself as a mom. I think even if you have a nanny (depending on your financial situation), or grandparents to help out, at the end of the day, you?re the one raising your kids. And that?s a tough job. My children are my priority and I want to be the one raising them. The best gift you can give your child is your time. We don?t get these moments back. When my girls were babies, there were incredible jobs that I didn?t take, because I didn?t want to miss all those moments. Life is always about making choices.

ED ? You are known world-wide as a sex symbol, and you?ve been ranked as one of the most beautiful people alive. How do you deal with such close scrutiny of your body? Describe your relationship with your body and with food, and do you have any tips for staying in the shape that you?re in?

DR ? I have been lucky enough to be thin my whole life. But I take good care of myself and I think clean living makes a difference. I?m careful what I put in my body, I try and stay out of the sun. I?m lucky that I didn?t feel the pressure to be thin in this business- I can probably credit good genes for that.

But, after my mom passed away, I gained 10-15 pounds, which was a lot for my frame. And I think it was TMZ that posted my weight gain (it was splashed all over the Internet), and I was shocked! I had never experienced such scrutiny and cruelty about my body. The tabloids had no idea everything that was going on in my life, and it was really mean, and very hurtful. ?I try to never read things in the media, ?but ?Oh look at fat Denise,? was difficult to read.

During this grieving period, was the first time I experienced emotional weight gain. I don?t even think I changed my eating habits- the weight just stuck to me ?cuz I was so grief-stricken?over losing my mom. But after some time, I decided to buckle down? I wanted to feel better emotionally and get back to the way I looked physically, so I started getting back into my pilates routine, and being really consistent. I started to feel better.

My secret to staying in shape is consistency. When I consistently stick to my routine, that is when I feel my best. I also think you need to work out for your own body. Just because something works for someone else, doesn?t mean it will work for you. So I believe you should continue to try different activities until you find out what works for you. I have tried everything out there you can imagine- weights, classes, everything, and for me, the best thing my body responds to is pilates.

ED ? Your marriage and divorce with Charlie Sheen were plastered all over tabloids for months and you endured invasive prying by the press into your personal family life. How did you maintain your sanity during this ordeal?

Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen

DR ? I maintained my sanity by knowing what?s important, and what was important was taking care of my two babies. I knew over time it would pass. It didn?t pass as quickly as I would have liked (laughing), but I knew I had to stay focused on really blocking a lot of that stuff out and being the best mom I could be.

My kids were too little to understand what was going on during my divorce, which was a blessing. They were babies. It was all about being a mom and being there for them.

?

ED ? What is your advice to other women who find themselves in a toxic relationship? It is not as easy as it seems, to just get up and walk away from the family unit. Women sit on the fence for months, often years before leaving a toxic relationship. Can you touch on this?

DR ? I think the advice I would offer to women contemplating leaving their partner, is to answer these 2 questions- Would I want this partner for MY daughter? ?And would I want MY son to grow up and be like this person? If you answer no to these questions, then he is not the right person to continue on with.

About drawing the strength to leave your marriage, that is so different?for every person. Everyone?s situation is different. It?s so personal for each individual and no one should judge a friend or another woman, and say things like, ?She should leave her husband immediately,? or ?I can?t believe you lived miserably in that marriage for so long.?

I always say, we don?t know what goes on behind closed doors, and we don?t know the ins and outs of anyone?s relationship except the people involved. All we can hope for, is great support around us, and support to get us through whatever decision we choose to make.

?

ED ? You speak often of your great love and respect of your mother, who passed away too young from cancer. What was the best life advice that you received from your late mother?

DR ? She gave me all kinds of advice. She gave me advice on how to be a mom, advice in my career. But I think her best advice she ever gave me was the importance of living in the moment. The gift that comes with being in the moment. And she herself always lived like that. She was always that way. I also think it?s really good advice, because when you let your mind wander to the past or the future, you?re not present. You?re not there. It?s as if you didn?t experience that moment. You end up missing a lot of wonderful moments.

ED ? Tell us, what are you working on at the moment in your career? And for a woman looking to break out into the media today (you were ?a Bond girl, my goodness), what advice would you give her?

Denise Richards in James Bond The World Is Not Enough

DR ? I just finished the 100th episode of 90210 which was fun, and?I?m now filming a new?tv pilot called Socio.

For anyone looking to break into the business, I think many underestimate the importance of hard work. Rejection and roadblocks are part of the job, but if you believe in yourself, nothing will replace that ?pick yourself up, and dust yourself off? attitude, and work ethic. If this is truly what you want to do, and if it?s your dream, then never give up and keep at it. But that goes with anything in life when pursuing your career ? keep plugging away.

Denise Richards on Charlie Sheen's new sitcom Anger Management

ED ? What inspired you to choose to adopt your youngest daughter? Three daughters! What is that like, a house full of girls? In fact, you?re an avid animal adopter and rescuer too. What is it about your need to rescue? My psycho babble is showing its face. ;)

DR ? I just knew I wasn?t done. And I have always wanted to adopt. I decided to pursue it on my own? I just knew that my family wasn?t complete. I think that children choose their parents- and Eloise just found me a different way. I can?t explain it. I just knew there was another soul for me.

We didn?t know she was a girl until three weeks before she was born. So, we weren?t sure if Eloise was going to be a girl or a boy. My sister has three boys, so it was so delightful to find out that I was having another girl. To have a house full of girls is the best, and I love it.

As for the animals, I have no idea where that came from. Ever since I was little, ever since I can remember, if there was a stray dog, I would bring it home and care for it, and try and find its owner. My sister is the opposite- she doesn?t have any animals. I gravitate toward the ones who are in special need of care, who have been abused, and who need medical attention.

And again, back to the adoption, there is no difference in me giving birth or adopting. AT ALL. I feel like I gave birth to Eloise.

ED ? And finally, if you could offer your twenty-year old self advice, what would you tell her?

I would tell her not to sweat the small stuff in life. That everything in life has a time and place, and not to be in such a rush to do everything. There is beauty in taking your time, and enjoying each stage and phase.

?

Feel free to leave Denise a comment or questions. She will be reading.

And to all the people who have been affected by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy (including Denise who is in New York at the moment), my thoughts and prayers are with you.?

Obama scraps campaign event, returns to DC

President Barack Obama delivers pizzas to campaign volunteers in OrlandoORLANDO, Florida - President Barack Obama scrapped his planned campaign appearance here with Bill Clinton on Monday and planned to return to Washington to oversee the response to deadly Hurricane Sandy.

"Due to deteriorating weather conditions in the Washington area, the President will not attend today's campaign event in Orlando," White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters. "The President will return to the White House to monitor the preparations for and early response to Hurricane Sandy."

Obama had flown down to Florida on Sunday, earlier than scheduled, in order to get ahead of the storm and attend the campaign rally. The show will go on, campaign aides said, including remarks by former Florida governor Charlie Crist and Democratic Senator Bill Nelson before Clinton speaks.

But with tens of millions of Americans in the path of the largest hurricane ever to churn through the Atlantic, and forced evacuations up and down the northeast seaboard, the president apparently judged that taking part in a political campaign event was non-optimal.

The president still officially planned to campaign in Wisconsin on Tuesday ? but that event seemed likely to be cancelled as well. He has already scrapped his participation in events in Virginia and Ohio ? both also to feature Clinton.

Obama has signed emergency declarations for Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington DC, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, freeing up federal dollars and materiel to help respond to Sandy.

Fly like an eagle: New launch and recovery system takes unmanned aerial vehicles into the future

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? A shipboard-capable system designed to support both the launch and recovery of the Scan Eagle unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) successfully completed final demonstration flight testing Sept. 27 at a testing range in eastern Oregon.

Sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Compact Launch and Recovery System (CLRE) will provide a small-scale solution for the unmanned surveillance craft's operations.

"This system's shipboard capability is unique," said John Kinzer, who manages ONR's Air Vehicle Technology Program. "It's more compact than other systems, so you can install it on a small special operations boat -- or save additional space on a larger ship, since space is always at a premium on any vessel."

The Scan Eagle is designed to provide the warfighter with advanced capabilities for real-time situational awareness and force protection information.

CLRE uses a compressed-air launcher to shoot the Scan Eagle into the sky. Once airborne, the UAV transmits real-time electro-optic and infrared (IR) imagery to a ground station where it can be recorded for analysis.

To land, small hooks on the UAV's wings catch hold of rope suspended from the system's extendable mast and arms. Once the mission is completed, the whole system can be folded up, like a folding chair or table, for storage.

Developed by Insitu Inc., the system is smaller and lighter than the current SuperWedge launcher and Skyhook recovery systems combined. Its design accommodates all weight classes of the company's Scan Eagle UAV design, including a model equipped with an IR camera, and provides the same air vehicle successful recovery rate.

The system currently is trailer mounted for testing and ease of towing behind ground vehicles, but Insitu is exploring modifications of this version for rapid deployments. Its turntable base allows for mounting to a variety of integration structures.

Today, it is primarily the U.S. Marine Corps that uses Scan Eagle, but other forces -- including the U.S. Coast Guard -- also could have uses for the unit. Coast Guard officials attended testing last week.

Kenya coast separatist official charged with inciting violence

MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - A senior leader of a separatist group campaigning for the secession of Kenya's coastal strip was charged in court on Monday with inciting members of his group to disobey the law by declaring the coast is not a part of the east African country.

Mohamed Mraja, the spokesman for the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), denied the charges which came days after four people were killed when a gang of youths brandishing machetes tried to attack a Kenyan cabinet minister at a public meeting.

Police linked the attack to the MRC and said they had also arrested four others believed to be officials of the group. The MRC denied any involvement.

The MRC has unnerved investors in the famed tourist haven by threatening to disrupt March elections if its demands for secession are rejected by Kenyan authorities.

Analysts fear any unrest could turn the tourist hot spot - with its sandy beaches and pristine waters a jewel in the East African nation's economy - into a potential flashpoint, fuelling wider fears of ethnic violence and riots during the elections.

MRC's grievances stem from what they call decades of marginalisation of the coast region in key economic areas including education and jobs by the central government.

Mraja escaped an early morning raid by police at his home, and from his hiding place told reporters he feared he would be killed over his public demands for secession.

He later turned himself in accompanied by lawyers, and said other senior officials of the MRC group were also in hiding.

"They are tracking my phone calls, threatening my family and friends and have now arrested my wife, but released her shortly after," he told reporters earlier from his hiding place.

"If I was in the house at that time, you probably might never have heard of me again."

Police said they wanted Mraja for questioning and possible prosecution, but denied any intention to kill him.

The court freed Mraja on bond pending his trial.

Police say the group is also planning to disrupt national school examinations at the coast due to start next month.

Next year's vote will be the first since a war crimes court launched cases against four Kenyans, including two presidential hopefuls in the 2013 election.

The two are accused of masterminding tribal violence that killed more than 1,200 people following a disputed 2007 presidential poll.

Last month more than 100 people were killed as tribes fought over land further north along the coast, adding to fears of serious unrest ahead of the polls.

last post - Talk About Marriage

When I 1st started dating my GF 8 month ago, I felt so confident about myself, it seemed like no other men existed, at least in her eyes. Over time my insecurities and jealousy has gotten out of control and I dont know how to stop these feelings and its really affecting our relationship.

She always tells me how much she loves me and is attracted to me, writes me love notes all the time and even buys me flowers sometimes. we are always grabbing eachother and making out, and we have great sex whenever possible. she says she wants to have kids with me and marry me someday. Im usually a very discipled person about most things in my life, and Ive always been very independent, and I dont scare easily either, but I love this woman and her daughter so much the thought of her being with or wanting another man is terrifying to me. Its gotten to the point I cant be happy cause even a guy liking a harmless picture on her FB drives me into a jealous frenzy, WTF is wrong with me?

I think what has me so wound up is some of the interactions she has had with her daughters father who she was on/off with for 5 years up until summer before last, nothing too awful just ambiguous flirting and txting pictures of their daughter and stuff. she also told him we broke up after a fight we had back in june, shes said she thought we did and was just confiding in him. I told her Im not comfortable with her having that kind of relationship with but she swears shes not interested in him but I still always feel like Im competing with him. I cant even go with her to pick her daughter up from his house, cause I cant stand the sight of him near her.

I also found out recently she friended and inboxed an old BF she said treated her very badly, again nothing bad just "hey whats up" kinda stuff and it was just one conversation back in july right before we moved in together but it really hurts that she would do that, she apologized but I just cant get past it and I feel like I cant trust her or really take her seriously about how much she says she loves me. Whever I try to talk to her about my fears it turns into a huge fight.
This is taking over my life, affecting my work and hobbies, but most of all its killing this otherwise beautiful relationship. I wish I could be more secure because I feel like my jealousy an insecurity will eventually drive her away or worse, into the arms of another man, but I just dont know how to control it. Any help is much appreciated.

Weak forecast on Asian economy sends stocks lower

Investors looked warily at forecasts for poor U.S. corporate earnings and weaker growth in Asia and decided there wasn't much reason to buy stocks.

In early afternoon trading Monday, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 46 points at 13,563. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell six points to 1,455 and the Nasdaq composite gave up 27 points to 3,108.

Companies in the S&P 500 index are expected to post an overall decline in profits for the first time in 11 quarters when earnings season starts on Tuesday, according to FactSet.

Tuesday will be the five-year anniversary of the S&P's high close of 1,565.15. It's still almost 7 percent below that level.

Stocks have been on a strong run, with the Dow up 11 percent this year and the S&P 500 ? a benchmark tracked by many mutual funds ? up almost 16 percent. But Asia's slowdown, Europe's problems, and now weak U.S. corporate earnings have caused some investors to wonder if the run-up has been too far, too fast.

The World Bank warned that a "more pronounced slowdown" is possible in China, the world's second-largest economy. It also cut its overall growth forecast for developing countries in Asia.

Slower growth in Asia could drag down the U.S. economy. One of the few bright points for the U.S. during the recession was tremendous growth in export demand by developing nations in Asia and other regions.

Even though the U.S. economy isn't doing badly, investors have been counting on growth in Asia for help, said Rex Macey, chief investment officer at Wilmington Trust Investment Advisors. "There was a point where we said 'Thank goodness for Asia and China. Their growth can fuel the recovery." That's not so clear anymore, he said.

Stocks and industries that depend most heavily on U.S. economic growth were among the biggest losers on Monday. Apple fell $13.07 to $639.60 and Intel fell 22 cents to $2.46. Home Depot fell $1.03 to $62.17 and Walt Disney lost 8 cents to $52.17.

Wal-Mart Stores and American Express shares didn't move much after they announced a reloadable prepaid card with no recurring or overdraft fees. But the news hammered shares of prepaid card competitor Green Dot Corp., which has also offered a card with Wal-Mart. Green Dot fell $2.57, or 20 percent, to $10.28.

UnitedHealth Group rose 41 cents to $57.54 after the health insurer said it would pay $4.9 billion in cash to buy most of Brazilian health benefits and hospital services provider Amil Participacoes.

Truck and engine maker Navistar rose $1.70, or 8 percent, to $22.91 after saying it will add two board members associated with activist investors, heading off a proxy battle.

European markets were also lower. The CAC-40 in France fell 1.5 percent, the FTSE 100 in Britain was down 0.5 percent, and the German DAX was down 1.4 percent.

U.S. government bond trading was closed for the Columbus Day holiday.

Calif. initiative will test appetite for GMO food

It also would prohibit labeling or advertising such food as "natural." (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

(AP) ? Calories. Nutrients. Serving size. How about "produced with genetic engineering?"

California voters will soon decide whether to require certain raw and processed foods to carry such a label.

In a closely watched test of consumers' appetite for genetically modified foods, the special label is being pushed by organic farmers and advocates who are concerned about what people eat even though the federal government and many scientists contend such foods are safe.

More than just food packaging is at stake. The outcome could reverberate through American agriculture, which has long tinkered with the genes of plants to reduce disease, ward off insects and boost the food supply.

International food and chemical conglomerates, including Monsanto Co. and DuPont Co., have contributed about $35 million to defeat Proposition 37 on the November ballot. It also would ban labeling or advertising genetically altered food as "natural." Its supporters have raised just about one-tenth of that amount.

If voters approve the initiative, California would become the first state to require disclosure of a broad range of foods containing genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Food makers would have to add a label or reformulate their products to avoid it. Supermarkets would be charged with making sure their shelves are stocked with correctly labeled items.

Genetically altered plants grown from seeds engineered in the laboratory have been a mainstay for more than a decade. Much of the corn, soybean, sugar beets and cotton cultivated in the United States today have been tweaked to resist pesticides or insects. Most of the biotech crops are used for animal feed or as ingredients in processed foods including cookies, cereal, potato chips and salad dressing.

Proponents say explicit labeling gives consumers information about how a product is made and allows them to decide whether to choose foods with genetically modified ingredients.

"They're fed up. They want to know what's in their food," said Stacy Malkan, spokeswoman for the California Right to Know campaign.

Agribusiness, farmers and retailers oppose the initiative, claiming it would lead to higher grocery bills and leave the state open to frivolous lawsuits. Kathy Fairbanks, spokeswoman for the No on 37 campaign, said labels would be interpreted as a warning and confuse shoppers.

"It's not necessary. Worse, it leaves people with the impression that there's something wrong with the food. That's not the case," she said.

The government approves genetically engineered plants and animals on a case-by-case basis, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture restricts the use of GMO crops that might harm other plants. The Food and Drug Administration can only require labeling if a genetically altered food is different ? in taste, for example ? from its non-engineered version or known to cause allergies.

The World Health Organization has said no ill health effects have resulted from GMO foods currently on the international market. The American Medical Association sees "no scientific justification for special labeling of bioengineered foods" but favors stricter testing before they hit stores.

Still, some consumers are wary and are increasingly demanding to know what's on their dinner plates. With California a trendsetter on other issues, whatever happens in the nation's most populous state could spill onto the national stage.

Already, at least 19 states this year have introduced GMO labeling bills, but none passed.

Alaska, with its dominant wild salmon industry, requires labels on genetically engineered fish, though none is currently on the market. Maine allows GMO-free products to be labeled as such.

The FDA is evaluating a petition to label genetically engineered foods nationwide; the group spearheading that effort is separate from California's initiative.

The push comes as genetic engineering is expanding beyond traditional crops. Last year, agricultural regulators approved the planting of genetically modified alfalfa, angering organic farmers who feared cross-contamination. An application is pending on an Atlantic salmon that has been genetically manipulated to grow twice as fast as a regular salmon.

California's ballot initiative would require most raw foods such as fruits and vegetables and processed foods by 2014 to bear the label "partially produced with genetic engineering" or "may be partially produced with genetic engineering." Meat and dairy products would be exempt even if the animals are fed with biotech grains. Organic foods, restaurant meals and alcohol are also excluded.

Supermarkets and other retailers would be in charge of making sure products for sale are properly labeled. Spot checks would be carried out by California Department of Public Health inspectors. The nonpartisan California Legislative Analyst's Office estimates that it could cost up to $1 million a year to regulate.

The initiative also allows individuals or groups to sue if they find food has been mislabeled. The California Grocers Association said supermarkets will do their best to comply if the measure passes, but noted it would be taxing on store owners. The group also fears being the target of lawsuits.

Association President Ronald Fong said it will be a burden for grocers to check the label of every box and keep track of their efforts in case they get sued.

"It's going to be a complete paperwork nightmare," he said.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which advocates for food safety, has not taken a side on the initiative. But Gregory Jaffe, the group's biotechnology director, favors giving the government more regulatory power over biotech crops.

"The solution is not labels," he said.

Real estate and moving isn't that everything ... - Relocation - Paris911

20121006-162446.jpg

This morning, we got up early, and we did an update that talked about the changes to some of the debt forgiveness programs that are being offered by the government. In doing so, we came across an article that was located in the Los Angeles times newspaper. The article talked about three different congressmen having different views of the debt forgiveness act that?s going to be voted on mid November 2012.

There?s not too much of a doubt that this particular debt forgiveness program is going to be extended. The only big issue is what are going to be the extension terms.

Are they only going to approve the debt forgiveness act for another year till the end of 2013 or are they going to extend, as one congressman wants, for an additional 3 to 5 years?

Before you take a stab to short sale your home, make sure you?re speaking with a real estate agent that knows what they?re talking about. There are many agents that say they?re short sale experts, when they have never handled even one short sale transaction on the side of the negotiator.

With short sales, it?s totally different representing buyers, than it is when you are a short sale agent representing a real seller.

SOFREP, Cybersecurity Analyst Claim that 'Support The SEALs ...

A website purporting to help Navy SEALs was downed Thursday and again Friday after The Special Operations Forces Report website ? SOFREP.com ? made some bombshell charges that the site ? SupportTheSEALs.org ? is not a legitimate non-profit organization nor a legally registered business.

SOFREP alleged the organization capitalized on the growth of charities established to support former Navy SEALs and their families? needs. The founder of the organization, Graham Ware, told TheBlaze that his?volunteer-based organization does not handle donated funds and therefore is not required to register as a non-profit organization.

Jeffrey Carr, a cybersecurity analyst and founder/CEO of Taia Global, calls up in his post on SOFREP?instances where it appears SupportTheSeals.org misrepresented itself.

TheBlaze spoke with Ware though Facebook messages and over the phone to respond to these allegations and to clarify the legal status of Support the Seals and the organization?s function.

(Image: @NavySEALsOrg/Twitter)

The short of his answer is that he and his colleagues work as volunteers and that SOFREP has ?zero proof? that the organization makes any money whatsoever. Ware wrote that he believes the ?truth will come out.?

Here?s the whole of what Ware wrote to TheBlaze in a Facebook message:

[...] the fact is there is no damages ? we dont make money and they have ZERO PROOF OF THAT! The domains were registered legally but only for a period of 13 weeks and look at the traffic hits? less that [sic] 6 unique visitors. There was no malice to this in fact we worked with the gentleman who brought forth this outrageous claim. We gave them over $26K and have two SEALs Chris Withrow and Matt McCabe who are now co-owners ? we are volunteer based but check out the documents under Our Responds [sic] on our homepage. The truth will come out. These are downright untrue claims backed with sensationalism.

The Allegations

So what is the evidence against Ware?s group? SOFREP?s post begins in a fact-check format, starting with things Ware has said, which then Carr debunks. Carr writes:

1.?Ware claims that Support The Seals is a registered LLC in Arizona. (Source: the SupportTheSeals.org Twitter profile -@NavySEALsOrg)

FALSE.?The State of Arizona shows a ?pending? LLC application which basically just reserves the name until 1/20/13 (Source:?Arizona Corporation Commission). The company itself doesn?t legally exist yet nor did it exist since Ware began his fundraising in 2009, which raises serious tax questions.

2.?Ware claimed to be a non-profit organization in June, 2012 on his Facebook page ?Navy SEAL Fund.org?.

FALSE.?There?s no official business entity registered in Arizona called Navy SEAL Fund let alone one that?s a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation.

Carr goes on to point out a small difference pertaining to this latter point that seems to be distinguishing the website from a legitimate Navy SEALs support organization ??NavySEALsFund.org?? which is a non-profit assisting military members and their families. Drop the ?s,? though, and enter it into the search bar, and it would redirect you to SupportTheSeals.org. This doesn?t work now, but Carr includes a YouTube video showing the difference. Check it out:

After SOFREP?s allegations, the servers of SupportTheSeals.org were overloaded with traffic downing the site until Thursday night. After the post was published, Ware wrote the following on Twitter account:

(Image: @NavySEALs.org Twitter screenshot)

In addition, SOFREP?s editor-in-chief provided us with another tweet that he says Ware sent but has since deleted that could have been part of an earlier defense:

SOFREP, Cybersecurity Analyst Claim that Support The SEALs Wrongly Profits on Donations, Founder Denies Allegations

(Image: @BrandonTWebb Twitter screenshot)

Who is Ware and what is SupportTheSeals.org?

According to his LinkedIn profile, Ware is an Arizona State University graduate who began SupportTheSeals.org three years ago. On LinkedIn he describes it as an ?established reputable organization leading fundraising, advocacy & support for our former, fallen & active duty US Navy SEALs & their families.? The Twitter account for @NavySEALs.org, which has SupportTheSeals.org as its website, states the operation is owned and operated by SEALs and civilians.

Ware told TheBlaze he volunteers for Support the SEALs ? as do all those who help the organization ? and works fulltime elsewhere. SEALs in the organization include?Chris Withrow and Matt McCabe.

Graham Ware (Image via SOFREP)

According to SupportTheSeals.org and the Arizona Corporation Commission, the organization is still a pending LLC, with its application submitted Sept. 21.

In 2009, Human Events reported Ware?s success?on social media rallying Facebook users to support SEALs who were being criminally prosecuted. Human Events stated Ware?s Facebook page was growing by the 10s of thousands each day in support of the SEALs.

Here you can watch Ware talk on a local news channel about the 2009 prosecution of three SEALs, which Carr points out was eventually dropped, and hear him talk about why he started getting involved in a SEALs support effort:

Ware said the money raised for the legal expenses of these SEALs was given to the Navy SEALs Fund, which it was working closely with at the time. The success at helping rally a community around this cause inspired Ware, he said, to continue raising awareness and helping support events through social media and marketing that would aid SEALs and their families. Ware said when SupportTheSeals.org is involved in an event, they do not handle the money but work with a coordinating organization if donations are being accepted.

Ware?s Defense

Ware said the money raised in 2009 went through Human Events, who helped organize the fundraiser.

?[It] never passed through us,? Ware said. ?We have everything legally disclosed on our website ? we are volunteer based so yes when all of these allegations came out ? SEALs came to our defense and now we have had to form an LLC.?

With regard to the domain names that were similar to the Navy SEALs Fund, Ware said his organization purchased domain names, but did not do anything with them. They redirected to SupportTheSeals.org because it was the site associated with them, he said. Once the Navy SEALs Fund called them out with a cease and desist order for the name and logos being similar, Ware gave up the domain name.

Ware sent TheBlaze letters from his lawyer Laura Brooks from Titus Brueckner & Levine showing correspondence to NavySEALsFund.org asking that they retract their cease and?desist?order as well as defamatory statements against SupportTheSEALs.org.

On SupportTheSeals.org, for which the website is currently functioning, there is a ?contribute? page and button. On the page, it is explained that SupportTheSeals.org is not a non-profit and that they are seeking approved LLC status. The actual button will take you to an inactive PayPal page. Ware said after LLC status is granted, the organization may choose to allow for contributions through PayPal that would help put on events that would raise money or awareness for SEALs and their families.

For now, though as the SupportTheSeals.org continues the legal process of becoming a legitimate corporation, Ware said he is taking some of the accusations to court and notes that he is ?confident? they will win the case. He said he is ?disheartened? such claims have been made against Support the SEALs in the first place but that they?re not going to give up because ?we didn?t do anything wrong.?

Fujitsu Lifebook UH75 running Windows 8 at CEATEC handson video

CEATEC isn't exactly the first place you'd expect a new notebook to turn up, but Fujitsu's booth had a bit of a surprise on the laptop front. The Japanese company had its Lifebook UH75 Ultrabook on display running Windows 8. That OS is the real news here: no other real specs beside the 14-inch screen we already knew about. Fujitsu said this machine will launch alongside its new Arrows Tab sometime in late October or November. Check out our video hands-on below the break.

How immune cells defend themselves against HIV

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? A team of scientists led by virologists Prof. Oliver T. Fackler and Prof. Oliver T. Keppler from Heidelberg University Hospital have decoded a mechanism used by the human immune system to protect itself from HIV viruses. A protein stops the replication of the virus in resting immune cells, referred to as T helper cells, by preventing the transcription of the viral genome into one that can be read by the cell. The ground-breaking results provide new insights into the molecular background of the immunodeficiency syndrome AIDS and could open up starting points for new treatments.

The study has now been published -- ahead of print online -- in the international journal Nature Medicine.

Human immunodeficiency viruses attack different cells of the human immune system, most frequently, "T helper cells." These lymphocytes play a key role in immune defense, since they activate other immune cells upon contact with pathogens and set off subsequent immune responses. In the course of the HIV infection, they are continuously depleted until the immune system ultimately fails, culminating in AIDS with various infections.

In healthy people, the vast majority of T helper cells in the blood are in a resting state. They are not activated until they contact the pathogens against which they are specialized in defending. In the activated state, the cells are susceptible to HIV infection. "In contrast, resting T helper cells are immune to HIV: While the virus docks, and delivers its genetic information to the cell, the infection does not progress further. We have investigated why this is the case," explained Prof. Fackler, head of the working group at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Virology. Even if the T helper cells are activated later on, the virus does not replicate, because the genetic information of the virus is degraded during this period.

HIV genome cannot be transcribed into cell-compatible version

The team is headed by Prof. Fackler and Prof. Keppler, who moved from Heidelberg to the University Hospital in Frankfurt in April 2012 and now heads the Institute of Medical Virology there. The researchers discovered that the cellular protein SAMHD1 significantly contributes to protecting the resting immune cells. The protein is present in both resting and activated T helper cells and depletes nucleotides, the building blocks of genetic information. In the active phase the cells double their genetic information and divide, a process that depends on the continoues production of nucleotides. In the resting state, the cell does not require any nucleotides and stops their production, and SAMHD1 degrades the remaining nucleotides. "As a result, the HIV viruses most likely also lack the material they need to transcribe their genetic information into a version that can be used for the cell and to allow it to replicate," Fackler explained.

In the experiment, if SAMHD1 expression was silenced, resting T helper cells became susceptible to HIV infection. The same was true for immune cells of a patient who is unable to produce SAMHD1 due to a hereditary condition. "This shows that HIV can only replicate in lymphocytes if the effect of the protective protein SAMHD1 is eliminated," Keppler said. In addition, the researchers discovered that this early protective measure must be followed by other barriers to HIV replication. Even without SAMHD1, no new viruses were released from resting T helper cells. Now that they have described the protective function of SAMHD1 and are able block it, the scientists can for the first time also investigate the downstream mechanisms. "We hope that we will be able to use these findings to develop new strategies in the fight against HIV," the virologist said.

US Postal Service defaults. Fate lies with Congress.

US Postal Service defaults on $5.6 million payment to US Treasury. Having squeezed costs, postmaster general says future of US Postal Service depends on Congress.

By Hope Yen,?Associated Press / September 30, 2012

In this 2011 file photo Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington. In an interview prior to the US Postal Service's second default Sunday, Mr. Donahoe said cash flow will reach a low point in October but can avert immediate bankruptcy.

The U.S.?Postal?Service, on the brink of default on a second multibillion-dollar payment it can't afford to pay, is sounding a new cautionary note that having squeezed out all the cost savings within its power, the mail agency's viability now lies almost entirely with Congress.

In an interview, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said the mail agency will be forced to miss the $5.6 billion payment due to the Treasury on Sunday, its second default in as many months. Congress has left Washington until after the November elections, without approving a?postal?fix.

For more than a year, the?Postal?Service?has been seeking legislation that would allow it to eliminate Saturday mail delivery and reduce its $5 billion annual payment for future retiree health benefits. Since the House failed to act, the post office says it's been seeking to reassure anxious customers that?service?will not be disrupted, even with cash levels running perilously low.

"Absolutely, we would be profitable right now," Donahoe told The Associated Press, when asked whether congressional delays were to blame for much of the?postal?losses, expected to reach a record $15 billion this year.

He said the two missed payments totaling $11.1 billion for future retiree health benefits ? payments ordered by Congress in 2006 that no other government agency or business is required to make ? along with similar expenses make up the bulk of the annual loss. The remainder is nearly $3 billion in losses, he said, which would have been offset by savings if the?service?had been allowed to move to five-day mail delivery.

Donahoe said the post office will hit a low point in cash next month but avert immediate bankruptcy due to a series of retirement incentives, employee reductions and boosts in productivity among remaining staff that saved nearly $2 billion over the past year.

But the post office has few tools left to build its revenue, he said, without either having to pay upfront money it lacks or get approval from?postal?unions or Congress.

"We've done a lot to reduce cost out of our system," Donahoe said. "The problem now is this: There's nowhere to go."

Postal?unions also say Congress is mostly to blame for losses, but disagree that a reduction to five-day delivery is an answer.

"What is needed is for Congress to undo the harm it has done with the prefunding mandate and for the Postal?Service?to develop a balanced plan moving forward," said Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He said cutting Saturday delivery would in particular hurt rural residents and the elderly who depend more heavily on the mail for prescription drugs and other goods.

The?Postal?Service?last month failed to pay $5.5 billion, its first default ever on a payment. While it will miss a second payment Sunday, it expects to make a $1.4 billion payment due to the Labor Department on Oct. 15 for workers' compensation. Cash levels are expected to hit a low after that labor payment before rising again due to increased volume from holiday and election mail, including ballots for early voting.

The mail agency said the two payment defaults will not affect day-to-day operations. Post offices will stay open, and suppliers and employees will get paid. Longer term, however, Donahoe has cautioned that a "crisis of confidence" over?postal?solvency could damage growth.

The post office also remains vulnerable to shifts in the economy that could suppress mail volume. Both FedEx Corp. and UPS recently have cut their earnings forecasts, citing in part slow global economic growth.

"The key thing is Congress must act during the lame-duck session and get this whole thing behind us," said Donahoe, referring to the few weeks lawmakers will be in session after the election before a new Congress takes office in January. "We can't have a?Postal?Service?where customers are constantly worried about our ability to make payments."

"That's no way to run a business," he said.

Congress will have a full agenda of pressing fiscal issues when it returns in November, and some lawmakers have raised the possibility that?postal?legislation will get pushed over to the next Congress. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and is a sponsor of the House bill, has said he believes some kind of legislation can be passed in the lame-duck session, although it may not be as comprehensive as initially sought.

The Senate passed a?postal?bill in April that would have provided financial relief in part by reducing the annual health payments and providing an $11 billion cash infusion, basically a refund of overpayments thePostal?Service?made to a federal pension fund. The House, however, remains stalled over a separate bill that would allow for aggressive cuts, including an immediate end to Saturday delivery. Rural lawmakers in particular worry about the impact of post office closures in their communities.

The?Postal?Service?originally planned to close low-revenue post offices in rural areas to save money, but after public opposition it now is moving forward with a new plan to keep 13,000 of them open with shorter operating hours. The?Postal?Service?also will begin closing more than 200 mail processing centers next year, but the estimated annual savings of $2.1 billion won't be realized until the full cuts are completed in late 2014.

"Once again, we are watching the days slip away before the U.S.?Postal?Service?faces the second default of its history. Republican leaders in the House of Representatives have now had 11 months to do the right thing and fix the serious, but solvable, financial challenges," said Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., a co-sponsor of the Senate bill. "Every day Congress delays fixing this problem, the financial challenge grows more difficult and the potential solutions become more expensive."

The?Postal?Service, an independent agency of government, does not receive tax dollars for its day-to-day operations but is subject to congressional control.

Art Sackler, co-coordinator of the Coalition for a 21st Century?Postal?Service, a group representing the private-sector mailing industry, said many businesses are preparing their budgets for next year and have no idea whether to expect disrupted?service?or higher postage costs.

"Congress needs to act quickly on comprehensive?postal?reform," he said. "These defaults, mounting debts and declining revenues aren't just going to hurt the?Postal?Service; they're going to hurt the 8 million Americans whose jobs depend on the mail."

Pregame: Washington State-Oregon

SEATTLE -- Though technically a home game for the Washington State Cougars, tonight?s matchup against the Oregon Ducks will probably be -- at the very least -- a neutral-field experience.

Even the mileage favors the No. 2 Ducks, who are squaring off the Cougars at CenturyLink Field in the Seattle game.

Eugene to Seattle = 283 miles.

Pullman to Seattle = 287 miles.

Obviously, the Ducks have a few more advantages than just the mileage. Like one of the nation?s most exciting offensive players in De'Anthony Thomas, a youthful but efficient quarterback in Marcus Mariota and a defense that is playing as well as any in the Pac-12.

Thomas is tied for the FBS lead with eight all-purpose plays of 30 yards or more. Which is a technical way of saying he?s super-duper explosive.

Washington State, meanwhile, is trying to bounce back from a loss last week to Colorado. This is the first time in Mike Leach?s career he?s faced Oregon.

Connor Halliday is again expected to start at quarterback for the Cougars. He?s appeared in seven games in his career for Washington State and has 17 touchdowns. That?s the most by any quarterback in school history during his first seven games.

It?s been a weird week of football at CenturyLink Field. Thursday night, Washington upset No. 8 Stanford; Monday night we saw the simultaneous-possession call at the end of the Seahawks-Packers game. Worth noting that the last time Washington State beat a ranked team, it was in 2006, when it beat No. 16 Oregon in Pullman.
