DETROIT (AP) ? President Barack Obama used a boisterous Labor Day rally on Monday to put congressional Republicans on the spot, challenging them to place the country's interests above all else and vote to create jobs and put the economy back on a path toward growth. "Show us what you've got," he said.

In a partial preview of the jobs speech he's delivering to Congress Thursday night, Obama said roads and bridges nationwide need rebuilding and more than 1 million unemployed construction workers are itching to "get dirty" making the repairs. He portrayed Congress as an obstacle to getting that work done.

I'm going to propose ways to put America back to work that both parties can agree to, because I still believe both parties can work together to solve our problems," Obama said at an annual Labor Day rally sponsored by the Detroit-area AFL-CIO trade union federation. "Given the urgency of this moment, given the hardship that many people are facing, folks have got to get together. But we're not going to wait for them."

"We're going to see if we've got some straight shooters in Congress. We're going to see if congressional Republicans will put country before party," he said.

Congress returns from its summer recess this week and the faltering economy and jobs shortage are expected to be a dominant theme.

Besides spending on public works, Obama said he wants pending trade deals passed to open new markets for U.S. goods. He also said he wants Republicans to prove they'll fight as hard to cut taxes for the middle class as they do for profitable oil companies and the wealthiest Americans.

The president is expected to call for continuing a payroll tax cut for workers and jobless benefits for the unemployed. Some Republicans oppose extending the payroll tax cut, calling it an unproven job creator that will only add to the nation's massive debt. The tax cut extension is set to expire Jan. 1.

Republicans also cite huge federal budget deficits in expressing opposition to vast new spending on jobs programs.

But Obama said lawmakers need to act ? and act quickly. "The time for Washington games is over. The time for action is now," he told a supportive union crowd that Detroit police said was in the thousands. The event at a General Motors Corp. parking lot in the shadow of the automaker's headquarters building had the sound and feel of a campaign event, with the union audience breaking into chants of "Four More Years" throughout the president's 25-minute speech.

Obama could be including himself in that call for action. His remarks came as he's facing biting criticism from the Republicans for presiding over a persistently weak economy and high unemployment. Republicans dubbed him "President Zero" after a dismal jobs report last Friday showed that employers added no jobs in August ? which hasn't happened since 1945. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, remained unchanged at 9.1 percent.

The report sparked new fears of a second recession and injected fresh urgency into Obama's efforts to help get the unemployed back into the labor market ? and improve his re-election chances. No incumbent in recent times has been re-elected with a jobless rate that high, and polls show the public is losing confidence in Obama's handling of the economy. His approval rating on that issue dropped to a new low of 26 percent in a recent Gallup survey.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said the report was disappointing, unacceptable and "further proof that President Obama has failed." Romney is scheduled to get ahead of Obama by outlining his job-creation plan in a speech Tuesday in Nevada, two days before the president addresses Congress.

Tax credits for businesses that hire and spending on school construction and renovation also are expected to be part of Obama's proposal.

Underscoring the political dueling under way over the economy, Obama plans to visit Richmond, Virginia, on Friday, the day after his speech, on the first of many trips he'll make to rally the public behind his plan. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, one of Obama's fiercest critics, represents part of Richmond.

Obama's broader goal with the speech is to make a sweeping appeal for bipartisan action on the economy by speaking not just to the lawmakers in front of him but also to the public at large. In that sense, the speech will mark a pivot from dealing with long-term deficit reduction to spurring an economic recovery.

Aides say Obama will mount a fall campaign centered on the economy, unveiling different elements of his agenda heading into 2012. If Republicans reject his ideas, the White House wants to use the megaphone of his presidency to enlist the public as an ally, pressure Congress and make the case for his re-election.

"People will see a president who will be laying very significant proposals throughout the fall leading up to this next State of the Union" policy address to Congress in January, Gene Sperling, director of Obama's National Economic Council, told The Associated Press in an interview.

While Obama has said any short-term spending proposals will be paid for over the long term, aides say the speech will not offer details on what deficit reduction measures would be used to offset such spending. The speech also is not expected to include a detailed plan to resolve the housing crisis, a central cause behind the weak economy that has vexed the White House since the beginning of Obama's administration.

Sperling suggested that Obama would address the housing issue separately during the fall.

Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce unveiled its own jobs plan on Monday. In an open letter to the White House and Congress, the business lobby called for measures to immediately boost employment, including stepped-up road and bridge construction, more domestic oil drilling and temporary tax breaks for corporations.

WASHINGTON ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was getting an early start on Sept. 11 commemorations by traveling Tuesday to ground zero of the terrorist attacks on New York and to Shanksville, Pa., where hijacked United Flight 93 crashed in an open field, killing all 40 passengers and crew members.

The visits kick off a series of 9/11-related events for Panetta to help mark the 10th anniversary of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people, including 184 at the Pentagon.

In New York, Panetta planned to tour the National September 11 Memorial, whose two reflecting pools sit within the footprints where the twin towers of the World Trade Center once stood.

In Shanksville he planned to visit the partially completed Flight 93 Memorial.

Panetta's spokesman, Doug Wilson, said the Pentagon chief wanted to visit Shanksville and New York in order to highlight the role the military has played over the past decade in preventing further attacks on the homeland. Accompanying him on his trip Tuesday were five service members ? one each from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard.

The visits also are likely to recall the most memorable event of Panetta's tenure as CIA director: the May killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

Panetta will attend 9/11 memorial events at the Pentagon on Sunday.

Shanksville remains the least publicized of the three 9/11 attack sites. In its final report, the official 9/11 Commission that investigated the terrorist plot wrote a gripping account of what happened aboard Flight 93.

The commission determined that the plane, overtaken by four hijackers, slammed into the ground at 11 seconds past 10:03 EDT, on a path over Pennsylvania toward its intended target in Washington ? either the Capitol or the White House.

It departed from Newark, N.J., bound for San Francisco, at 8:42 a.m. The hijackers took over the cockpit 46 minutes later. At 9:57 a.m. a passenger revolt began. The cockpit voice recorder captured sounds of the passenger assault.

"Some family members listening to the recording report that they can hear the voice of a loved one among the din," the 9/11 Commission report said. "We cannot identify whose voices can be heard. But the assault was sustained."

Within minutes, the hijackers apparently determined they were about to be overpowered and decided to abort their mission and destroy the plane.

"The airplane headed down; the control wheel was turned hard to the right. The airplane rolled onto its back, and one of the hijackers began shouting, `Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest.' With the sounds of the passenger counterattack continuing, the aircraft plowed into an empty field in Shanksville, Pa., at 580 mph, about 20 minutes' flying time from Washington, D.C."

1) Ergonomics support the whole body. When one is practicing good ergonomic habits, the entire body will feel the support. 3) Ergonomics increase production. It just makes sense that when workers feel healthy and aren't fatigued, they get more done. They are comfortable, they enjoy their jobs and thus, they become more productive. So many managers and business owners only think of money when they think about becoming more ergonomic in their thinking. The truth is, you will more than make up for the money spent because your workers will get more work done.

4) Ergonomics increase quality. It's one thing to get more work done. It's another thing to have your workers produce top-quality work. When employees are sick and fatigued, they don't spend much time worrying about the quality of their work. They just want to get it done, as quickly and painlessly as possible, so they can go home. When they are given proper tools, however, to be more comfortable and healthier, they will be able to take the time and energy to do a better job.

5) Ergonomics produce satisfied workers. Every worker wants to take pride in his work. When one has a sore back, however, or aching legs, it's impossible to feel good about your job. Given an ergonomic desk chair, however, one can make the proper adjustments to get comfortable. The back will receive the support it needs and the legs will stop aching. Suddenly, the employee feels like he has the energy and stamina to get his work done. His attitude improves and he enjoys his job once again.

Practicing ergonomics does not need to be a complicated or difficult process. By just making some minor changes in the office, one can accomplish a lot of things for the company. Your workers will be more satisfied and you will see your production begin to increase. It's a small price to pay for such amazing results!

Study questions the impact of sexualized lyrics on adolescent behaviors and attitudes

Do sexualized lyrics in popular music have an impact on the sexual behavior and attitudes of adolescents? Researchers Cougar Hall, Joshua H. West, and Shane Hill from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, take a look at the trend of increasing use of sexually explicit lyrics in music. Their findings, published online in Springer's journal Sexuality & Culture, provide food for thought for educators whose focus is to promote healthy sexual development.

Cougar Hall explained, "Considering previous research establishing an association between sexualized music lyrics and adolescent sexual behavior, our findings unfortunately offer sexuality educators a stormy forecast."

The amount of music that 8-18 year olds listen to has increased by 45 percent in recent years, rising dramatically with the popularity of MP3 players, such as iPods. Previous research has indicated that there is a strong link between exposure to sexual media (on screen and in music) and sexual activity. Teens tend to overestimate the sexual activity of their peers and one source of this misperception is the entertainment media.

In this study, the researchers analyzed the lyrics from the top 100 songs in the Billboard Hot 100 year-end most popular songs every decade from 1959 to 2009. They found that male and non-White artists were more likely to write songs with sexual lyrics in the past two decades and that there were more sexual references overall in 2009 than in 1959.

The authors point out that not all sexual references are equal, and degrading and sexualized music can have a deleterious effect on teens. For girls in particular, this can lead them to judge their personal worth on a sexual level only, leading to poor body image, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse.

The authors advise that their findings raise serious concerns related to the promotion of unhealthy sexual messages in music. They conclude: "Popular music can teach young men to be sexually aggressive and treat women as objects while often teaching young women that their value to society is to provide sexual pleasure for others. It is essential for society that sex education providers are aware of these issues and their impact on adolescent sexual behavior."

Q. My mother is soon to be discharged from the hospital after a long post-surgery recovery. What problems could she encounter? Since she lives alone, how could we be prepared?

A recent study has identified an unusual phenomenon. For senior citizens, hospitalizations actually may cause temporary memory loss and difficulty in understanding discharge instructions, according to a Northwestern Medicine study.

The seniors go back to normal one month after the hospital stay, the study found. But immediately following a hospitalization is a critical time in which seniors may need extra support from healthcare professionals and family, according to Lee Lindquist, M.D., the lead author of the study, published online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

?A helper on the day of discharge could make sure a senior understands discharge instructions and help her get home and follow instructions safely,? Lindquist said. ?If a patient is by herself the day of a hospital discharge, it?s possible that she won?t comprehend complicated medical instructions, increasing medication errors and chances of re-hospitalization.?

More than 200 seniors, age 70 and older, who lived on their own in the Chicago area and were not diagnosed with dementia or other cognitive problems, took part in the study.?At the time of discharge, cognition tests were administered to examine mental status. Almost one-third had low cognition that was previously unrecognized. One month later, 58 percent of those patients no longer had low cognition. They had significant improvement in areas of orientation, registration, repetition, comprehension, naming, reading, writing and calculation.

?When the senior is no longer sick enough to be in the hospital, it doesn?t mean they?re 100 percent ready to be on their own,? Lindquist said. ?It?s a critical time and they need extra support and understanding from healthcare professionals and family.?
