Boy killed by falling tombstone was helping dad

A 4-year-old Utah boy was helping his father by trying to make other children smile for a picture when a 6-foot-tall tombstone that weighed hundreds of pounds fell on the boy and killed him at a historic cemetery, family members and friends said.

Carson Dean Cheney was with his family in the resort town of Park City on Thursday evening when the headstone toppled onto him after some metal connecting it to its pedestal broke, his grandmother Geri Gibbs told The Associated Press.

The boy's father, Zac Cheney, does photography in his spare time and was taking portraits of another family at the Glenwood Cemetery, said Curtis Morley, a co-worker and family friend. They chose the old cemetery because of its extensive landscaping, he said.

Morley said some of the children being photographed were not being responsive, so Carson tried to help his dad by pretending to be leprechaun and making them laugh. The boy went behind a tombstone and was poking his head out from behind it when it fell on him.

"Carson passed away while trying to make others smile," said Morley, who works with Zac Cheney at a professional services firm in Salt Lake City.

Gibbs said it took three men to pull the heavy slab off the boy, and rescuers "did everything they could possibly do."

The child suffered injuries to his head, chest and abdomen and was taken to the nearby Park City Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Gibbs said the boy and his family were visiting from Lehi, about an hour away.

She said Carson was just about to enter kindergarten, loved to ride his bike and was "full of life."

"There's still so much disbelief and sorrow and anguish," Gibbs said. "We just keep waiting for the door to open up and Carson to come through, a happy little boy."

Park City police Capt. Phil Kirk said Friday an investigator was at the cemetery probing the incident. Kirk did not immediately return phone calls Saturday.

Police Chief Wade Carpenter said the coarse headstone that fell on the boy marked the grave of someone who died in the 1800s.

Bruce Erickson, president of the Glenwood Cemetery Association, said the private, five-acre cemetery around the corner from the Park City Mountain Resort was founded by a society of silver miners in 1885, and many of the tombstones are at least 100 years old.

The cemetery is open to the public and still accepts burials of people connected to the mining society. No funerals were held there Thursday.

Erickson said new burials happen maybe once a year, and families are responsible for maintaining the headstones.

A funeral for the boy is set for Tuesday. Morley said a memorial fund has been established at Zions Bank.

Lisa Guest: She Moved Me (Nora Ephron)

I didn't relocate, or even change the direction of my chair to face another view.

I'm moved for many reasons because Channel 4 had such a touching remembrance of Nora Ephron. I don't usually watch Channel 4. I don't subscribe to cable at home, so I only had so many options with which to listen to the wisest minds decipher hers.

I loved hearing the reminder that both her parents were writers and she was told from a young age, "If you slip on a banana peel, people laugh at you. If you tell people you slipped on a banana peel, it's your joke." Her mother told her to always view everything that happened to her as something that, years later, she would look back upon with humor.

I listened to Channel 7 talk about her passing, both "World News" and "Nightline". The movie clips were different, but the message was very similar. Then I got to hear Martha Tichenor's piece on Channel 2 before Anne Thompson's piece at 15 minutes before the hour. After that, I turned off the tube. I could feel the emotions bubbling up within.

I was at the computer when news of her passing broke. I feverishly searched for the reason she died at the age of 71. In about ten minutes, I discovered she had acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with pneumonia. I've heard about AML. AML is a disease that is fairly easy for people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia to graduate into after treatment. CLL is chronic. AML is acute. I have the former. She had the latter. That piece of information got so immediately stuck in my throat that I had to call my mom and interrupt her during her dinner to share the news (my mom also has CLL and we've laughed through many of Nora's movies together). I had to talk it over, however briefly, with someone who knew what was screaming in my heart even if I used few words to describe it.

I'm moved because Nora, for all the success she had in the outer world, chose not to tell many about her disease.

I'm moved because she admitted that, to her, writing like breathing. If that's true, how did she not write about the diagnosis? How did she not tell those she'd laughed and worked with for decades that a tragedy was coming to give them the chance to say what they might want or need to say?

She did so much with her humor, her movies, her published pieces and other public performances such as graduation and award acceptance speeches. A friend gave me a fabulous essay Ephron had written in the New Yorker about money. When When Harry Met Sally was published, she finally had enough money to buy a certain Dogwood she'd wanted for decades and plant it in her yard. Nora seemed to make every subject come alive.

I hope she wrote something privately as she stepped ever closer to the end. I hope that its unearthed sooner or later. In her last book, she said she would miss her sons, her husband, the drive into Manhattan and pies after she passed.

Oh, I would have loved to know how Nora processed her pain, her fear, her sadness at having to say goodbye. I guess she did it by not saying it publicly before she had to go. Instead, she let her sudden absence say it all.

Canadian who defended Uighur minority rights 'forgotten' in Chinese prison: wife

TORONTO - The wife of a Canadian citizen who is serving a life sentence in China for speaking out on behalf of the country's Uighur minority says the Canadian government has all but forgotten about him.

Kamila Talendibaeva says her husband, Huseyin Celil, a refugee from China's troubled Xinjiang region, is being punished because he spoke out about the democratic and religious rights for the Muslim minority group.

Human rights activists say Beijing considers anyone in the Uighur community who tries to promote their culture or religious values, or who speaks about greater autonomy for the Uighur people, a terrorist.

Talendibaeva says she will join a demonstration today in Toronto to mark the third anniversary of the July 2009 riots in Urumqi, China in which nearly 200 people were killed.

Junior foreign affairs minister Diane Ablonczy says her department was engaged in Celil's case but admits diplomatic hurdles complicated the government's attempt to push for his release.

She says China does not recognize dual citizenship and they do not, as a consequence, recognize Canada's right to have consular access to one of its imprisoned citizens.

"They have not been willing to budge off that position although we continue to press them and will continue to press them," Ablonczy said.

Celil escaped from China in 1994 when the terrorism charges first surfaced. He fled to Turkey where he was granted refugee status by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. He became a Canadian citizen in 2001, when he moved to Ontario and settled in the Hamilton area.

In 2006, while visiting his wife's family in Uzbekistan, Celil was detained by Uzbek police and deported to China without the consent of the Canadian government.

Wayne Marston, NDP critic for human rights, said that the trumped up terrorism charges are typical in China for silencing dissent.

"Anybody that appears to have expressed concerns about the regime in China is subject to those terrorism laws and the abuse of them," he said.

Celil's wife said it's been months since she last received an update on her husband's case from the Canadian government.

"I'm frustrated," Talendibaeva told The Canadian Press from her home in Burlington, where she lives with her four young sons.

"I didn't receive anything from the Foreign Affairs Department and I didn't get any information from the Chinese authorities," she said.

Celil's sister has been the only person allowed to visit him in prison ? for 40 minutes behind a glass enclosure every six months, Talendibaeva said. No other visitors have been given access, including Talendibaeva and the couple's children.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper raised Celil's case with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao during a visit to Beijing earlier this year.

But Harper's strong statements on China's human rights record did not sit well with the Chinese government and may have hurt Celil's chances of release, Marston said.

"There were times that if you handed the Chinese a note with 20 names on it of people who were detained, without too much commentary at all ? three, four months later they would start surfacing and would actually get released," he said.

"But if, on the other hand, you were to, like our prime minister apparently did, make the public announcement that he is going to talk to them about their human rights record, that kind of slows processes altogether," he said.
