UK retailer slashes HTC One S price, now ?314.99 SIM-free

Android Central

HTC is due to launch new products at an event in New York City next week, and that means retailers are keen to discount stock of existing handsets. One of these is the excellent HTC One S, which we reviewed back in April, and which can now be yours for £314.99 from Exansys in the UK -- around £100 less than the launch price. To sweeten the deal, the retailer's throwing in a free Krusell screen protector, too. The version on offer is the black "ceramic metal" model, which is treated using the unique micro-arc oxidation process.

There might be newer, shinier handsets on the horizon, but the One S remains a great phone, and represents good value at just over 300 quid. In the months since its release, we've yet to come across an Android phone with better build quality. More at the source link below.

Democratic convention beats football in ratings

(AP) ? The second night of the Democratic National Convention beat the Republicans in television ratings and, perhaps more impressively, beat pro football.

An estimated 25.1 million people watched the convention between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Wednesday, when former President Bill Clinton delivered an impassioned nomination speech for President Barack Obama, the Nielsen ratings company said.

During that hour, just over 20 million people were watching the second half of the Dallas Cowboys' season-opening victory over the New York Giants. Faced with competition from Clinton, ratings for football's first game were down from the past two years.

The second night of the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., last week, featuring vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, was seen by 21.9 million people, Nielsen said Thursday.

Democratic convention ratings held up well compared to 2008, when interest was particularly high. The Democrats had a four-day convention then, with 25.9 million viewers on the second day and 24 million on the third. None of those nights faced competition from pro football.

The entire football game was seen by an average of 23.9 million people on NBC, Nielsen said. Last year's opening game was seen by 27.1 million, and 2010's game had a record 27.5 million. The opening game generally features the Super Bowl champion from the year before.

Competition among the TV networks televising the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday was about as tight as polls show the presidential race between Obama and Republican Mitt Romney.

ABC had the biggest audience, with 4.59 million viewers. CBS had 4.41 million, MSNBC had 4.39 million, CNN had 4.13 million, PBS had 4.1 million and Fox News Channel had 3.1 million, Nielsen said.

Current TV and C-SPAN also showed the convention. Nielsen had no immediate estimate of Current's viewership, and C-SPAN's audience is not measured by the ratings agency.

Casey Rivers to perform at local church Sunday

PALESTINE ? Christian solo artist Casey Rivers of Nashville, who was first runner-up on USA Network?s ?Nashville Star? in 2006, will perform in a church concert Sunday at Westwood United Methodist Church in Palestine.

Rivers will give his testimony in word and song during the 10:50 a.m. worship service.

Rivers, who grew up in Lindale, Texas, most recently served as the lead singer for Christian vocal trio Beyond The Ashes for the past 3 1/2 years, leaving the group in August to spend time with his family and continue on the path God leads him on.

?I?ve been singing in a lot of churches, wherever God opens the door and gives me the opportunity to tell my story,? Rivers said during a phone interview with the Herald-Press Wednesday. ?I learn as I go. I walk through the doors and God presents opportunities. The more I do, the more I learn what I will do next. I?m just enjoying the ride until then.?

In fact, the 30-year-old Rivers first started singing in church at age 3.

?My parents were part of a gospel quartet and I?ve been singing in church all of my life,? Rivers said. ?I started pursuing country music as a junior in high school, but I?ve always had a heart for ministry even when I was singing country music. I always felt that the country music stage could reach a group of people that not necessarily would step into a church building.? I?ve always presented a lot of positive country songs that I feel people are able to relate to and share how good God has been to me while on the country stage.?

At the age of 8, Rivers was the entertainment at his first professional rodeo. In high school, Rivers received the ?Gold Music Award,? a music honor award in recognition of outstanding contributions and dedication to music. When he graduated from Lindale High School, he went full speed ahead with his music career by taking voice, stage, guitar and songwriting.

In 2002, he was named the winner of Loretta Lynn?s National Talent Search. In 2003, he performed as an invited guest and duet partner with Lynn and later opened for the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame induction show with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Bush. In 2004, he was named the International Country Gospel Music Association?s ?Male Horizon Artist of the Year" Award.

After his successful run on ?Nashville Star? as the first runner-up ? current country music singer Chris Young (?Tomorrow,? ?The Man I Want To Be?) was named Nashville Star winner that year ? Rivers performed during the Nashville Star Summer Tour in 2006 and began writing songs, finishing his first professional CD in 2008.

While with Beyond The Ashes, Rivers performed at more than 200 shows and services a year. In 2011, he was named the Absolutely Gospel Music award winner for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. The band?s single ?Coming of the King? landed in the top 10 of Singing News charts at No. 9.

Other recognition for Rivers while he was with Beyond The Ashes include 2012 American Guild of Music award nominations for Album of the Year, Male Group of the Year, Fan Favorite Artist of the Year and Progressive Southern Album of the Year. They also were nominated this year for two Gospel Music Association Dove awards for New Artist of the Year and Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year. The group has performed on the Grand Ole Opry stage for ?Sunday Morning Country? and with the Bill Gaither Homecoming group at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Ky.

While singing country music, Rivers has performed with artists including Loretta Lynn, Neal McCoy, Willie Nelson, Ray Price, Hank Williams Jr., Big and Rich, Sara Evans, Jason Aldean, Wynonna Judd, Chris Young, Phil Vassar, Kenny Rogers, Miranda Lambert, Gaither Vocal Band, The Martins, The Nelons, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Jason Crabb and many more.

Currently, Rivers is making plans as a solo Christian artist.

?I?m excited. I?m about to start work on a new CD ? a hymn project,? Rivers said during the interview.

Rivers and his wife will celebrate six years of marriage this year, living in Nashville, with two small children, ages 4 and 2 with a third child on the way.

?I absolutely love it,? Rivers said about having a family.

Rivers said he has performed in East Texas a few times in the past few months.

?I definitely love coming back to Texas. I may have lived out of state for six years, but Texas will always be home,? Rivers said. ?Plus, I get see family and friends in Texas.?

Admission to the concert Sunday is free. A love offering will be taken.

Westwood UMC is located at 204 Clover Lane in Palestine, at the corner of West Oak Street and Ridgewood Dr. in Westwood.

How to Update Galaxy Ace S5830i to Simplicity Android 2.3.6 Custom ROM

As we all know, due to hardware limitation, the Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830i will no longer receive official updates, the Gingerbread system being the last one that you can OTA apply on your handset. You shouldn?t worry though as third party devs are working to bring new ROMs (ICS and Jelly Bean based ones) for your smartphone. Such platforms are already available for your Ace, so for suitable tutorials check out our how to section. Now, today I will show you how to flash the Simplicity Android 2.3.6 custom ROM firmware on your Galaxy Ace, this being the latest and the most stable unofficial update developed for your device.

This software was developed and first tested by those of xda-developers so we have them to thanks for the present step by step guide. The Simplicity ROM is being based on the latest XXLF3 firmware and brings numerous and important features to your Galaxy Ace. Also, your phone will be updated with a new interface and you will be able to personalize and customize the looks, the appearances and everything else you need to. In a few words you will be able to enjoy a redefined Android experience, not to mention that the performances of your handset will be powered up. You will gain more speed, have more access to the internal system, install complex apps, optimize and customize the OS and enjoy an improved battery life.

Those were just some of the features and capabilities which will be ported to your Ace. For more details about the same you can take a look over the image from below where I have listed the most relevant aspects about the Simplicity Android 2.3.6 ROM. In this way you can make a proper idea about the update and decide whether or not to install the same on your smartphone. Also, I recommend you to read all the lines from this guide for ensuring that you are making the best decision and for keeping your device in safe hands.

Simplicity Android 2.3.6 main Features

Simplicity Android 2.3.6 main Features

If you like what you see then let?s start working. First of all, as usual, before commencing to change something on your phone you should be sure that your personal data can?t be erased. Furthermore, as we are about to change the OS, a full wipe of the system will be required, so it?s important to perform a backup. Only after that you can head to the installation procedure or to other tasks that you must complete. A backup operation can be applied easily as there are many ways in which you can manage the same. There are many apps available on Google Play and it will be a good idea to use them. If you don?t know which app to download or how to use the tools, here are some tips.

Now that you saved the data, you should take care of other things. For being able to update your Galaxy Ace S5830i you must root it first. Also a custom recovery image should be installed on your handset. The root access must be gained as the ROM cannot be flashed on a system that has the factory restrictions installed. The recovery image will be used for installing the update file and for performing the wipe, so it?s a must have. Be aware as when you root the OS, the warranty will get void. So, don?t perform things by yourselves, always use and follow a step by step guide like this one. Anyway, the warranty can be replaced by downgrading to the stock ROM so it will be a good idea to note down the version of firmware which is running on your Ace.

So, now you know how to backup the data and you have noticed that you need to root and install a custom recovery image on your smartphone. The last thing that must be mentioned here is related to the pre requisites. In the following list I have mentioned some operations that must be performed if you want to ensure that nothing bad will happen during the update process. Don?t skip this section as it is the most relevant one. In the end you can safely head to the proper steps.

  • You must have access to a Windows running computer and to the phone USB cord.
  • On your PC and device if there are security tools installed, please deactivate them before commencing the steps from below.
  • Take your Ace and go to ?Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging?; check the last option.
  • Also, check the battery status. If it indicates less than 70% power, go and charge the battery first.
  • Apply this tutorial only for the Samsung Galaxy Ace model number S5830i, or else you can brick your Android powered device.
  1. On your computer download the update file from here.
  2. Then, use the USB cord and connect the phone with the PC.
  3. Select the downloaded file on the computer and copy-paste it to your Ace.
  4. Unplug the USB cable and disconnect the device from the PC.
  5. Turn off the handset.
  6. Reboot in recovery mode.
  7. For recovery you must press and hold the Menu button while powering on.
  8. First of all, from recovery select ?wipe data factory reset? and ?wipe cache partition?.
  9. Then, ?+++go back+++?.
  10. Now, for installing the ROM, select ?install zip from sd card? and ?choose zip from sd card?.
  11. Pick the update file and don?t make any other changes in recovery.
  12. Wait until the process ends.
  13. Then, select ?+++go back+++? and ?reboot system now?.

That was the how to procedure from which you could learn how to manually install the Simplicity Android 2.3.6 Custom ROM firmware on your Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830i smartphone. Tell us if there were problems during the installation process or if you had problems in understanding one of my explanations. Also, share your impressions about the new Rom with us and with other users by using the comments area from below.

Building With The Boys: Build, Remodel, or Just Buy As Is: What ...

I know, I know, we are way overdue for the second installment of ?Building With The Boys.? The house is practically graduating from high school. I?ve been bogged down with my own fun plumbing issues: my Groehe faucet in my laundry room blew a gasket and flooded, THANK GOD for water bug sensors. Though I wasn?t home, the alarm company called and the fire department came over: water, water everywhere! Not too happy with the Groehe folks, and they will be hearing from me! Meantime, let?s hear how the pride of Azalea Lane is faring:

It?s been a fast and furious four months since the grim reaper passed down Azalea Lane off Preston and took with it the 1950s mini rancher that we bought last ? ?.? Instead of May flowers resulting from April showers, we saw loads of dirt (Candy?s favorite thing on earth!) moved and the foundation forms tracing the future foot print of our dream home.? Where the half-dead sweet gum tree once stood is now the vicinity of the master bedroom door way.? Good thing it?s gone or getting to bed would have been tricky!? Not an ounce of concrete was poured and we were debating how the sofa configuration would play out in the formal living room. ?We like to put the cart before the horse!? But hey? that?s the fun stuff part of building from scratch and having everything ?your way?

June?s first big milestone:? a foundation.? As the mercury rose, so did a bunch of sticks. Or as the builders put it, we were vertical. It took just a few days to see what we were getting ourselves into. And thank Saint Joseph the patron of all-things real estate we LOVED what we were seeing.? Side note: how the framers know how all those toothpicks fit together according to the blueprints is mind boggling, ?especially with that extreme Texas heat working against them. ?(Um, if it were US behind those hammers, there?d be signs of heat-induced delirium in every wall, doorway and rafter.) ?Hats off to the unsung framing geniuses out there.

Now put your hat back.? UV rays are dangerous.

July saw the process of pipes, wires, heating/AC (lots of AC please!), and roofing.? Each week was like a [very expensive] birthday? what do we get this week!?? In the last few days, the windows arrived and now the neighbors can start the tongue wagging: will they or won?t they like the new neighbor? ?We are now in the heat of deciding cabinetry, brick color, plumbing fixtures, and flooring.? Next time: more on what we discovered and learned during the first 3 months.

In building a house from the ground up, many have asked us if we are about to strangle one another. ?In other words, is it stressful? Marriages have been known to dissolve over the stress of building a new house. Have we banged our heads repeatedly against a nail-ridden 2?4? ?Do we pine for our last house?? Wish we were in the Virgin Islands drinking margaritas and mojitos?? Yes.? But, only to the latter.? Otherwise, the experience is educational and, more often than not, fun.? We credit our builder, Mark Hayes.

That leads us to the questions we get at every single ?cocktail party no matter what is served: would we build new again? ?Will we venture back to remodels? ?Or buy something already done and just chill?? While our crystal ball is currently out of service, we weigh the pros and cons of each:

?

David Koechner Talks Football, Life

david-koechner-stars-as-champ-kind-in-anchorman-2

You probably know him best as Champ Kind, Anchorman?s drawling, sexually ambiguous sports anchor. But David Koechner has been knocking around TV and movies for a long time, dating all the way back to a brief Saturday Night Live run in the mid-nineties. And having appeared in at least eight sports-related projects (including Talladega Nights), the man can talk a little game. So thanks to the Bud Light Fantasy Football League, we asked him via video interview about the new NFL season, the long-awaited Anchorman 2 and achieving your dreams. Koechner also has fun with name pronunciation, picks a Super Bowl winner and quotes Michelangelo. Check it out!
