Q. An employee requested an accommodation for a medical issue. We asked her to provide a note from her medical provider regarding the need for accommodation. She brought in a note but it?s unclear what the physician is trying to say. What should we do?

A. Employers are entitled to know that an employee has a covered disability and that a requested accommodation is necessary. So your initial request for the note was correct (if the disability or the need for the accommodation wasn?t obvious).

If you are not certain what the medical provider is saying, you should first inform the employee of what is missing or unclear and then allow her to obtain the clarification. If she still doesn?t provide sufficient documentation regarding the existence of a covered disability or the need for an accommodation, you may require her to go to an appropriate health care professional of your choosing. ?

Remember that any medical examination conducted by the provider you choose must be job-related and consistent with business necessity. The exam should be limited to determining the existence of an ADA disability and the functional limitations that require accommodation.

Note: If you require the employee to attend an examination, you must pay all costs associated with the visit.

TAG Oil Lays Off 60 Workers at Sidewinder Site in New Zealand

WELLINGTON - Canadian oil exploration company TAG Oil Ltd. has laid off 60 workers and stopped drilling operations at the newest well on its Sidewinder site on New Zealand's North Island following complaints of noise levels exceeding prescribed limits, a senior company official said Wednesday.

Tag's Sidewinder site currently has seven wells in production. The 60 workers who have been laid off were involved in drilling at an eighth well, a highly automated site, the company said.

The company received a noise abatement notice from the New Plymouth District Council last week, TAG's chief operating officer, Drew Cadenhead, told the Wall Street Journal by email.

"The company voluntarily stopped the drilling program while it works through the issue," Mr. Cadenhead said, adding that the company "is now reviewing what options it has for this site (the eighth well)."

Problems at TAG Oil's newest well started in February, when the New Plymouth District Council issued a first notice about nighttime noise levels. That notice was withdrawn after the company placed a barrier of containers between the site and two nearby houses directly affected.

A second notice was issued last week when night-time noise levels again exceeded the prescribed 45-decibel level.

The Sidewinder site is one of four permits owned by TAG Oil in the oil-producing Taranaki basin on the west coast of the North Island. TAG has had interests in New Zealand since 2003. The first discovery of oil at the Sidewinder site was in 2010.

The season finale of "The Borgias" on Sunday will actually be its series finale.

Showtime announced Wednesday that the saga of the historical Borgia family will end Sunday, after three seasons. The series which stars Jeremy Irons as Pope Alexander VI, the patriarch of the Borgia dynasty, was created by Neil Jordan ("The Crying Game" and "Interview with the Vampire").

?For a variety of reasons we won?t be doing a fourth season, but, ?The Prince? [the final episode], when I wrote it and shot it, did seem like the end of a journey for the family," Jordan said in a statement. "Whatever bonded them as a family dies in this episode, and the center of the drama for me was always the family."

Irons was nominated for a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the lying-cheating-stealing pope. The cast includes Francois Arnaud and Holliday Grainger as the pope's son and daughter.

Genomics and particle physics top the scientific charts

LONDON (Reuters) - Genomics and particle physics - offering different perspectives on the fundamental nature of life and the cosmos - are the two hottest areas of scientific research.

Eight of the 21 most closely followed scientists in 2012 studied genes and their functions, while the single most-cited paper last year covered the hunt for the long-sought Higgs boson particle, according to a Thomson Reuters survey on Wednesday.

It was the third year in a row in which genomics researchers topped the rankings, in terms of authoring the most highly cited scientific papers, underscoring the central importance of genetics in biological science and medicine.

"Genomics is a perennially hot topic as we learn more about how (DNA) sequences play out in the manifestation of disease," said Christopher King, editor of Thomson Reuters ScienceWatch, which tracks trends in research.

The relevance of the work in genomics was evident this week at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) congress in Chicago, where key advances in cancer medicine on display hinged on understanding the genetic basis of tumors.

The world's "hottest" researcher, as measured by the number of citations during 2012 for papers published between 2010 and 2012, was Richard Wilson at the Washington University School of Medicine, the survey showed.

Wilson's laboratory was the first to sequence the genome of a cancer patient and discover genetic signatures related the development of disease.

FORMATION OF THE UNIVERSE

Other hot genomics researchers on the list included Eric Lander of the Broad Institute of MIT at Harvard and Kari Stefansson, the founder of Icelandic biotech company Decode Genetics, which was acquired last December by Amgen.

Papers related to the search for the Higgs boson accounted for nearly one fifth of the 51 papers published in the 2012 hottest research list. The boson and its linked energy field are viewed by physicists as vital in the formation of the universe and in giving mass to matter.

No single scientists working on the Higgs particle, however, were identified in the rankings because of the highly collaborative nature of the particle physics research, with some papers involving upwards of 3,000 authors.

Scientists working on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, outside Geneva received an honorable mention as a group.

The survey also highlighted the growing importance of Chinese research in a number of fields, with institutions in the country producing four of the 21 hottest researchers, including Jun Wang from the Beijing Genomics Institute.

"When you look at the quantity of papers published by various nations, China has sky-rocketed in the last few years," said King. "That hasn't necessarily been commensurate with impact in the literature, as measured by citations, but this seems to be starting to change."

Most Businesses Probably Had a Mobile Security Incidents Last ...

Nearly 80 percent of large businesses experienced some kind of mobile security incident in the past year. And, of those, more than 60 percent experienced $100,000 or more in financial losses from that incident.

That?s the headline finding on a survey released today by security outfit Check Point. The company surveyed 790 IT professionals in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Germany and Japan, and this is the second survey of its kind by Check Point in as many years.

More than half of large businesses ? 52 percent ? say their incidents cost them $500,000 or more, while 45 percent of small businesses say their incidents cost them at least $100,000.

There were several interesting findings that go along with the growing ?bring your own device? (BYOD) trend that a survey by Gartner found last month has been evolving into a requirement.

Here are a few more nuggets from the Check Point survey:

• Some 53 percent of respondents say there is sensitive customer data stored on mobile devices, which is up from 47 percent last year.
• About half say they think the mobile operating system with the greatest security risk is Google?s Android, versus Apple?s iOS, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. This is up from 30 percent last year.
• Nearly half of all businesses have seen a fivefold increase in the number of mobile devices on their network in two years. Nearly all of them, 96 percent, say the number of personal devices on their networks is growing.
