How to Fight Your Online Addiction and Regain Control of Your Attention [Habits]

How to Fight Your Online Addiction and Regain Control of Your AttentionHow much time do you spend each day responding to email, checking Facebook, sending and reading Tweets, aimlessly surfing your favorite websites and buying things you don't need? How much time, in other words, do you spend doing stuff online that doesn't add much value in your life, or in anyone else's? Too much, I'm going to guess.

I let it happen to me when I woke up Sunday morning, got on my laptop and started reading the New York Times. Ninety minutes later, I was still surfing from one bookmarked website to the next, vaguely aware that there were other things I wanted to do and that none of what I was taking in was very nourishing. And yet I remained narcotically glued to that screen?a baby bird with its mouth open, forever eager to be fed.

"There are few things ever dreamed of, smoked or injected that have as addictive an effect on our brains as technology," writes Stanford psychologist Kelly McGonigal in her terrific book The Willpower Instinct.

"The definitive Internet act of our times," she adds, "is a perfect metaphor for the promise of reward. We search. And we search. And we search some more...clicking that mouse...looking for the elusive reward that will finally feel like enough."

Or, as Nobel Prize winner Herbert Simon put it way back in 1978: "A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention." And retention. Taking in endless bits and bytes of information is akin to pouring water into a glass already full?in this case our severely limited working memory.

A growing body of research suggests that up to 95 percent of our behaviors occur on automatic pilot, out of habit or in reaction to an external demand or stimulus. We spend a crazily disproportionate amount of time seeking the next source of instant gratification, rather than pursuing the more challenging goals that ultimately deliver more long-term value and greater satisfaction.

It's not about summoning the strength to say "no." Each time we intentionally forgo something desirable, we deplete our already limited reservoir of will and discipline. When was the last time you resisted the seductive ping of an incoming email?

So how, then, to withstand this Pavlovian pull? And how, in turn, to take back control of your attention, so you can put it to better and richer use?

A few suggestions:

1. Lead yourself not into temptation. Instead, consciously choose times to turn off your technology entirely. The best time of all is at the start of your day, when you've typically got the most energy. Specifically, that's the best time to take on your most important and challenging tasks, without interruption, for anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes.

2. Carry a notebook with you throughout your workday. Download any ideas that come to you as quickly as possible?not just to ensure you'll remember them, but also to clear space in your working memory for whatever comes at you next. Alternatively, type the ideas into a memo pad on your smart phone.

3. Between meetings and obligations, take some time to breathe deeply?in through your nose to a count of three, out through your mouth to a count of six. In as little as one minute, you can completely clear your bloodstream of the stress hormone cortisol. You'll feel calmer, and you'll be better able to focus.

4. Take a 15- to 20-minute nap between 1 and 4 p.m.?especially on days when you've not gotten sufficient sleep and you find yourself dragging. Even a very short nap can dramatically increase your alertness and your productivity over the subsequent several hours. (This assumes, of course, than you can get your boss on board. Make the case that it'll improve your productivity.)

5. Designate and put in your calendar specific times each week to think reflectively, creatively, and/or strategically. Get up from your desk and take a walk outside, or find a comfortable, relaxing place to hang out. Leave your smart phone at your desk. The idea is to give the verbal left hemisphere of your brain a rest from its usual overload?and to rely instead during these periods on the more visual, imaginative right hemisphere of your brain. You'll know you're doing the right thing if you lose track of time.

Green Blog: Adapting Gas-Fired Power to a Greener Grid

Making electricity from natural gas is cleaner than making it from coal or oil, but as gas gains a bigger market share in the business in the United States and elsewhere, the idea of what constitutes a good generator is shifting. General Electric announced a line of new models on Wednesday, with two interesting environmental twists.

One is efficiency. New natural gas plants burn the fuel in something that resembles a jet engine that is chained to the ground and turning a generator. Over the years, as the technology of such models has improved, they have been converted a given quantity of gas to larger and larger amounts of electricity.

Modern plants are often ?combined cycle? generators, meaning that the exhaust of one engine is used as the heat source for another. The hot exhaust from the jet is used to boil water into steam, and the steam is used to turn a second turbine; if the jet engine extracts 40 percent of the energy in the gas and the steam turbine extracts 40 percent of the remainder, the combination is about 60 percent efficient.

In 2000, G.E. introduced a new model that reached that 60 percent level. At the time, the Energy Department likened that milestone to running a four-minute mile. The new models it is introducing now are a little over 61 percent efficient.

Boosting efficiency in a jet engine is tricky. The amount of work that the machine can get out of a fossil fuel depends on the temperature of combustion, but if the designer pushes the temperature too high, the metal components could melt.

The solution is to hollow out the blades that extract energy from the passing hot gas and to circulate cool air inside them. ?Cool? is relative here; G.E. is using air at 1,000 degrees to cool blades whose exterior is heated to 2,800 degrees. The metal blades are coated with a ceramic that acts as an insulator, helping keep the metal temperature down.

A key trick in raising efficiency, said Paul F. Browning, the president of the company?s thermal products division, is using technology borrowed from G.E.?s aircraft engine business to prevent the 1,000-degree air from leaking into the 2,800-degree gas path, which would cool and it thus reduce efficiency.

But in the years since G.E. introduced the 2000 model, new players have entered the grid: wind and solar plants that produce energy with a much smaller environmental footprint yet are highly variable in their output. A system that can integrate a large amount of renewable energy can far more significantly reduce the average amount of carbon dioxide produced per kilowatt-hour than one that relies on natural gas alone.

Still, relying on renewable energy requires other generators on the grid to rapidly adjust their production, up and down, to compensate. Some grid operators will therefore pay the owners of generators not only for how much energy they produce but for how quickly they can change their output to help balance the supply as demand shifts.

So G.E. has introduced a product line called FlexEfficiency that allows operators to adjust quickly as renewable energy comes on on and off the grid, including a 750-megawatt combined-cycle plant that can vary its output by 100 megawatts in one minute. The model introduced in 2000 could only change its output by 50 megawatts in one minute.

The company says it has $1.2 billion advance orders, including one from the Japanese utility Chubu Electric Power, which, as Mr. Browning delicately put it, would help the company ?respond to events of March 11.?? He was referring to last year?s quake and tsunami in Japan, which caused a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant and led to the shutdown of all of the country?s nuclear reactors.

The combined-cycle gas plants are likely to replace the output of some G.E.-designed nuclear reactors.

A Saudi electric company also placed a big order to replace generators that run on oil so it could use the oil for export, G.E. said. And Xcel Energy has ordered one to replace a coal-burning power plant in Denver, the company added.

Jazz-singing robot could shed light on consciousness

ROBOTS and humans will soon be living in harmony. A singing robot is being taught to improvise jazz duets with a human in a project that researchers hope will shed light on the nature of consciousness.

Antonio Chella at the University of Palermo, Italy, is working with a Telenoid robot, developed by the Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratory in Japan (pictured). To start with, the Telenoid will be trained to mimic the movements and simple sounds made by a human singer, as well as associate parts of music with different emotional states. Chella then plans to see if the robot can use these associations to improvise - choosing movements and vocalisations that complement its human duet partner.

Intelligence is often defined as the ability to find connections between existing entities - understanding that a key goes in a lock, for instance. But Chella suggests that a conscious organism should be able to go a step further and introduce novel connections - between, say, musical phrases - that result in the creation of something new. That, in essence, is the idea behind improvisation.

Jazz musicians interviewed by Chella talked of having a mental library of musical phrases that they were able to combine in new ways when prompted by other musicians. Importantly, however, this combination happens in a state that is "similar in a sense to dreaming", he says. "Not really conscious, but not unconscious." Chella wants to replicate these states in a machine. "Consciousness could be linked to these moments of combination," he says.

Chella presented the idea this month at the International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks in Lausanne, Switzerland.

"[This work] raises interesting questions about the link between consciousness and music making," says musician and computer scientist Philippe Pasquier at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. But he is sceptical about whether a robot musician needs a physical body, citing examples of AI composers that exist only in software.

Instead, Pasquier argues that automated musicianship boils down to two challenges: composition and interpretation. Software has already been developed that can imitate Bach, he says. Interpretation, on the other hand, involves the specifically human traits of taste and aesthetic judgement. "What made The Beatles famous was not so much their compositions, but the fact that the interpretations of the compositions were brilliant," he says.

It is not yet clear how an artificial musician would go about interpreting music in a novel way. But by mimicking humans and then learning to sing, Chella's robot could provide clues.

What does seem to be important is that human composers often listen to hours of music made by others. "Humans don't tend to do things in a vacuum," says Pasquier. Chella's robot better get listening to those jazz standards.
