Volunteers tackling home improvement project

Jim and Karen Ebbeson have organized materials and a team of volunteers to rehabilitate the exterior of a 100-year-old ?Victorian Lady? home in downtown Sturgeon Bay.
?The owner is a single mom who simply would not have the resources to tackle this on her own,? Jim Ebbeson said. ?By helping make over her home, we are helping lay the groundwork of a good future for her kids, we are giving others a tangible way to give back to the community, and we?re beautifying the neighborhood. It is a winning situation all the way around.?
The Ebbesons were heavily involved with the genesis of Door County?s Habitat for Humanity chapter and are very familiar with the concept of a ?hand-up, not a handout,? where homeowners contribute ?sweat equity? in exchange for the financial and labor support provided by the organization, he said.

Donna Lott of Old Lyme has run Painting with a Woman?s Touch for 26 years. She works by herself, painting houses.
Earlier this year she got a call from a Lisa Carpenter to paint a house at 345 Rope Ferry Road in Waterford. She came to the job, typed up a quote and submitted it to the woman.
She never heard back. But last week, she received a letter saying she was being fined $ 250 for not having a home improvement license, and would have to buy a license for $ 220, a process that lasts about three weeks, during which she is not allowed to work. Tuesday, she was watching television news when a story came on about a sting operation conducted by the Department of Consumer Protection out of the house to catch unlicensed contractors. Realizing she was part of that sting, she was shocked.
