The Mystery Rust of Kivalina, Alaska

A scanning electron micrograph of an unidentified rust spore from Alaska. Note the gorgeous projections that look like they've been turned on a lathe.

Author?s note: This is the last of a series of four posts in Fungi Month here at TAA. Enjoy!

Last month a mysterious orange film (?goo? in the media vernacular) washed up on the shores of a northwest Alaskan village called Kivalina. Experts suspected crustacean eggs; locals were unnerved. In retrospect, reports that the substance ?dried into a powder? should have been suspicious, as should reports that the orange stuff also appeared on the water in rain buckets. Either the crustaceans really got around, or all was not as it seemed.

An orange powder seems an odd product for the drying of crustacean eggs, but could make perfect sense for fungi ? specifically, the rust fungi. And indeed, that is what experts believe them now to be. And yet, for all the gumshoe work, they really still have no idea what they actually were ? or what produced such an explosion in a place that had not seen such an event in the memory of anyone living.

Rusts are all plant parasites, but unlike the smuts ? their close relatives, who I wrote about here earlier this month ? they don?t specialize in hijacking plant parts for their nefarious purposes; instead they embed their reproductive structures in plant tissue in a system that can only be described as a byzantine dance of propagules. Some rusts have make up to five different sorts of spores produced in five different structures on two different hosts. It?s a bit dizzying keeping up with it all.

Before I fry your neurons with a rust life-cycle chart, let?s take a slightly larger view. There are thousands of species of rust, and all are plant parasites, many of which specialize in giving farmers ? and biologists ? headaches: coffee, asparagus, beans, snapdragons, carnations, roses, and wheat all have rusts that have achieved or are working on infamy. One rust ? cedar-apple ? makes distinctively alien orange goo starbursts on eastern red cedar (really a juniper) in the United States; its alternate host is apple.

A cedar-apple rust (Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae) gall on eastern red cedar after rain. When they're not wet, instead of looking like something your kids would enjoy eating or dropping down your shirt, they look like wooden balls with little satanic horns.

The reason they are called rusts is obvious: they make plants look rusty by discharging orange, powdery spores on leaves and stems during at least one of their many life stages. Here?s a photo I took of a rust dropping powdery orange spores in a rather undignified manner from a wild rose when I was on my boreal toad-hunting trip in July:

In completing their reproductive gymnastics, rusts produce some pretty interesting microscopic structures, or fruiting bodies, as mycologists sometimes call them.

Inside one of them, called a spermagonium or pycnium, sterile, stiff, tapering filaments called periphyses converge and push up on the plant epidermis. They rupture it, forming a little hole called an ostiole, and sometimes protrude through it like tentacles. Tailless male gametes called spermatia (or pycniospores) are formed inside and exuded in droplets of sweet, sticky nectar.

Nearby, ?receptive hyphae? (high-fee ? fungal filaments that make up their bodies) also protrude through the hole. Nectar-seeking insects land, get a sugar fix, and then take off with some hitchhiking spermatia stuck ? in some embarrassing configuration, no doubt ? to their feet or bodies. When they land on another spermagonium/pycnium, the spermatia/pycnia can then fuse with and fertilize the receptive hyphae. You know what this should remind you of, of course: a flower. A fungal flower, in fact, convergently evolved to suit the same purpose. And like some flowers, rusts have a rudimentary male/female system (mycologists boringly call the mating types A1 and A2) that ensures spermatia from a given spermagonium can?t fertilize their own receptive hyphae

OK. That is ONE of the FIVE possible life stages of a rust fungus. I?ve tried to shield you from this as long as possible. But I can?t hold back any more. Behold: the full horror of the life cycle of a heteroecious (two-host), macrocyclic (way too many spore-types) rust:

For the bionerds, delight in digesting this. For the rest of you, all that?s necessary is to notice what a headache it must have been getting this all figured out. For the record, not all rust fungi have life cycles this complex. Some have only one host, and some have only a few of the structures described above. But you get the idea.

This particular life cycle belongs to a rust fungus that is on my own personal ****-list. It is white pine blister rust ? Cronartium ribicola ? introduced to North America around 1900 and just now reaching Colorado after killing untold numbers of five-needle pines across the west. It has come south from Montana. And it is set to start killing our venerable limber and bristlecone pines, which I wrote about in June here. But I digress.

Each of those little cross sections in the drawing is a vertical section through a tiny cup-like structure on a stem or leaf. The potato-like objects inside are the spores. N is haploid(one copy of the chromosomes) and 2N is diploid, but N+N is a special fungal thing. It means the cells are dikaryotic ? they have two nuclei from mating but they haven?t yet fused. Fungi have a tendency to have some part of their life cycle involve this odd-couple state. In humans, as you?ll recall, the nuclei of sperm and egg waste no time in fusing once the sperm makes its intentions known.

There is also a beautiful variety in the structure, color, and texture of rust teliospores ? the resting stage for many rusts ? which were traditionally used to classify them. They are often spiky or pegged dark brown visual confections of one to several cells, in chains, layers, or on stalks. At least one teliospore I looked at was a multicellular bundle with a striking resemblance to pattypan squash.

It is the urediospores (produced in the uredia) which are usually rusty orange (aeciospores can be orangey too), and these are the spores that scientists believe exploded into view in Alaska.

But the scientists at the NOAA lab in Charleston, South Carolina, that did the identification could not give the rust a species name. It didn?t match anything they had worked with before, they said, and they noted that there are many unidentified rust species lurking in Arctic tundra; as you can imagine, mycologists, a scarce resource in any climate, are not particularly abundant in northwest Alaska.

When I contacted the lab this week to find out if they had any further information on the rust?s identity, they said they did not. And unless some inquiring mycologist with time on their hands (ha!) has time to take a look, that is all we will probably ever know. And yet it gets a girl wondering: where *did* all those spores come from? What tundra plant could have possibly been so parasitized without anyone noticing? It?s not like rusts hide the fact they?re hanging out on plants ? quite the opposite. And for an explosion of spores so profuse that they coated the ocean and washed ashore, there must have been something brewing on a biblical scale on the unfortunate hosts east of town. And what was it about this year that made them go crazy? If you?ve been paying to any news of the Arctic in the last five years, you can probably make an educated guess.

Before I close this post, though, I have a question about rusts I?d like to pose: if a rust has two hosts, they?re usually only distantly related. For instance, wheat stem rust?s hosts are common barberry and various grasses, straddling the gap between monocot and dicot flowering plants. White pine blister rust feeds on five-needle pines and various currants and gooseberries, shifting between the conifers and flowering plants. Uredinopsis osmundae shuttles between balsam fir and cinnamon ferns, crossing a huge taxonomic gap between seed-making and spore-making plants. Why?

And this leads to a larger question, which some of the wiser minds among you may understand, which is why so many parasites both of animals and plants seem to enjoy doing the host shuffle at all, much less across giant taxonomic gaps (there are many animal parasites, for instance, that shuttle between vertebrates and invertebrates like snails or annelid worms)? What benefit could having two sets of biologies and immune systems to navigate possibly offer when you could confine yourself to the comfy and familiar environs of just one host? I?m interested in your thoughts, so please feel free to share below. I should probably know the answer to this since I read Parasite Rex once upon a time, but I do not. Forgive me, St. Carl.

My Love/Hate Relationship with SAHM | Motherhood Unadorned

So I think I?ve determined that I have a love/hate relationship with being a stay at home mom. OK, not ?hate? exactly, more like love/not-love.

Granted I?ve got an almost 4-year-old and an almost 20-month-0ld, so its a pretty labor-intensive time in the grand scheme of motherhood. Neither child is in school. BOTH are still in diapers. (Yes my 4 year old is not potty trained. If you don?t already know the story, feel free to read the post.)

Right now, tonight, I have a few moments while they are both sleeping to write a blog post, and it struck me just how much I LOVE/NOT LOVE my SAHM life. So here?s a few reasons why.

I?d love to hear if you can relate to any of them. And if you can?t relate, how do you feel about your own role as SAHM or WAHM or WOOHM (that?s ?Work Out of Home Mom? in case that wasn?t clear. Did I just make that up? WOOHM sounds like a pretty cool abbreviation to me.)

Why I LOVE being a SAHM:

1. I get to see my kids grow and change minute to minute. I don?t ever feel like I might miss milestones or moments.

2.?I get to snuggle A LOT on a daily basis for naps, quiet times, game times, movie times. (My kids are very cozy snuggle bugs.)

3. I?ve built a very strong attachment with my kids. They want mama around them, with them and I love that.

4. I get to watch the beautiful relationship forming between Ronin and Ellie on a daily basis. It is such an amazing thing to see. They can be so sweet and loving with each other, love playing together, and be absolute terrors to each other. But I get to see it all.

5. Because I?m with her so much I understand Ellie?s?toddler speak?probably 95% of the time, which makes communication at this stage pretty easy. SO nice!

6. We luckily don?t have to pay for costly childcare. (Its EXpensive in the Pacific Northwest.)

7. I can still easily nurse Ellie at almost 20 months and not have to worry about pumping, etc (Have I mentioned how much I hate pumping?)

Why I NOT-LOVE Being a SAHM:

1. The constant unending cleaning, picking up, wiping butts, making food/cleaning food/washing dishes, dressing/undressing/laundry, etc. The tedious cleaning of everything is just amplified. I used to have a pretty clean nice looking house before kids. Now I feel like things just pile up and pile up and pile up all of the time. I?m the queen of piles and I hate them.

2. I NEVER get to pee by myself. Unless little ones are asleep of course.

3. Its difficult to focus on anything other than them when they are awake and with me. Me time/blog time/necklace-making time is impossible unless I pay for it, the kids are asleep (and let?s face it, I?d like to be asleep too!) or my husband watches the kids. And I want him to have him-time too.

4. I never feel fully present for adult conversations when I?m at play dates with our friends. I always have half to three-quarters of my brain on my kids. Moments of true adult time are very few and far between.

5. I take less care of myself, i.e. doctors appointments, dentist, any appointment really, because of the hassle of scheduling care.

6. Finding ways to keep the kids entertained and happy all day long can be tiresome and draining.

7. Part of me misses being a creative, active, engaging professional interacting with other professionals on a daily basis.

Why LOVE Overcomes the NOT-LOVE:

1. Right now, being a SAHM is my choice, my husband?s choice, our family?s choice. And its the right one for us, right now. Being with them on my worst day is better (for me), than not being with my kids at this stage of their lives.

2. It may not be the right choice tomorrow (but tomorrow is not today.) I can definitely see me doing something out of the home once they both hit school age, whether non-profit or corporate, I don?t know. I really am loving my mental health advocacy. So we?ll see.

3. On days that my own mental health is not at its best, I can be in the comfort of my home. I can use my own strategies to take care of self and take care of my kids. In other words, I can be lazy if I need to be. PJ Movie days are just fine and can happen on a regular basis. (Like today.)

Every role of motherhood has its own joys and challenges. And I know every stage and age of kids, brings its own joys and challenges too. So I?m just going to keep moving forward. Making the best choices (for us) and for my mental health.

Today I am SAHM, tomorrow the FUTURE (whatever that may be) awaits!

Bank lobby rejects reopening of Greek rescue deal

(AP) ? The international bank lobbying group that has been leading negotiations on giving debt-ridden Greece easier terms for its bonds on Sunday rejected calls to impose larger losses on private investors.

Forcing private creditors to write down their Greek bond holdings by more than the 21 percent tentatively agreed to in a July deal would quickly cause a "domino effect" that would see the crisis spread to other parts of Europe, warned Josef Ackermann, the outgoing chairman of the Institute of International Finance.

Such a move would ultimately cost taxpayers much more than just bailing out Greece and erode confidence in the euro, said Ackermann, who is also the CEO of Germany's Deutsche Bank, a major lender to Greece.

Germany and other rich eurozone nations have been pushing for a re-negotiation of the July deal, arguing that the economic situation in Greece has significantly deteriorated since then and may require a steeper cut in the country's debt load.

However, Ackermann quickly rejected that push, saying that the agreement was fair and already placed a heavy burden on banks at a time of major market turmoil.

"If we now start reopening this Pandora's box we will lose a lot of time and I'm not sure people would be willing to participate," Ackermann told a news conference on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund.

Under the July deal, Greece is asking banks and other large private investors to swap their existing Greek bonds for ones with longer repayment deadlines, a lower face value or lower interest rates. The IIF says the deal would save Greece some euro54 billion by 2014 and euro135 billion by 2020.

However, most analysts say that those savings are far too small to make Greece's massive debts ? which amount to some 160 percent of economic output ? sustainable again. At the same time, there have been growing doubts that investors will agree to swap 90 percent of their bond holdings, a minimum threshold that Athens set to make the deal worthwhile.

Getting private creditors to agree to the deal comes at a heavy cost for Greece. Apart from temporarily being rated in "selective default" ? a first for a eurozone nation ? the country has to spend some euro42 billion on setting up a collateral fund that would secure the remaining value of the bonds.

If at some point Athens decides that a steeper cut in its debt was necessary, that money would go to the bondholders.

"If the July deal goes ahead, Greece would be locked into this perpetually," said Sony Kapoor, managing director of Re-Define, a Brussels-based economic think tank.

Greece has been relying on euro110 billion in rescue loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund since May 2010. In July, when it became clear that Athens needed more help, eurozone leaders agreed on a second, euro109 billion bailout, although several aspects of that deal still need to be finalized.

To make the second aid package acceptable for their taxpayers, several rich countries led by Germany pushed for banks and big insurance companies to share some of the pain of bailing out Greece ? despite opposition from the European Union and the European Central Bank, the central bank for the 17 nations that use the euro as a common currency.

But since July, the eurozone's debt crisis has significantly worsened, partly because investors now fear that they may also face losses on bonds from already bailed-out Portugal and Ireland as well as struggling Italy and Spain. The Greek economy is now set to shrink 5.3 percent this year, up from a June estimate of a 3.8 percent decline, followed by a further contraction in 2012.

In-app purchasing fail on iTunes is starting to bug developers

In-app purchases via iTunes have apparently been failing in a big way for the last ten hours and app creators who depend on this heavily taxed income are getting antsy. We're hearing unconfirmed speculation that the problem may be connected to fake purchase receipts getting into the system. Whatever the cause, one developer told us the failure is "losing lots of sales" for apps that use receipt verification and is "threatening to more-or-less take down the entire IAP ecosystem." Seeing as Apple insists on this being the only route for in-app purchasing, they'd better fix it pretty darned quick.

[Thanks, Tipster]

Sports After 60 ? Why and how You Should Preserve Engaging in ...

I know personally probably the most cherished areas of my entire life continues to be my love of the ocean and also the activity associated with surfing. As I grew up within southern Calif. I started hanging out at the beach surfing when I had been Twelve or Thirteen years of age. I surfed just about every day through senior high school. In my 20s I started moving around but were able to continue browsing even in cooler much less welcoming places. I am turning Sixty this season within March and I nevertheless appreciate surfing with an enthusiasm despite the fact that I do not get the chance to surf as often.

One of the reasons I have been able to stay with this particular sport that I love so much is that I have ensured I remained in good physical shape. I also have remained consistent with my browsing, a minimum of enough to not lose my wish.

Regrettably many people give up their own adoration for a sport as they get older simply because they get too busy, their own focal points alter or even these people shed their own physical stamina to keep performing the activity.

First and foremost, if you wish to get back to performing the sport a person was raised loving, you have to make room for this that you experienced. You may want to don?t start too fast and make back into it.
Like me you might never have the ability to perform as well as do well at the activity as if you as soon as do. I used to be completely immersed in the browse tradition way of life, however which has transformed for me, I do not live that lifestyle anymore. But I have the deep desire to take part in the sport on what ever degree I can.

To continue participating you have to remain or even improve your health as well as fit. You need to permit time and room and merely get it done. For all those people that love person sports it is simpler simply because we can get it done upon our own. It?s certainly harder whether it requires a team, you have to count on others to get it done.

It?s usually feasible to find a group you are able to sign up for, there are lots of over Sixty teams for basketball, soccer, football and other team sports. Despite individual sports activities it?s great to have a buddy to talk about it with. But if that isn?t usually feasible, then you have to just get out and do it on your own.

Put in more effort to lift the profile of snooker ? Ngieng | BorneoPost ...

by Philip Wong reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on September 23, 2011, Friday

GET IT RIGHT: Ngieng (centre) cue off the ball to officiate the championship. Looking on from right is Wong and Tan.

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council deputy chairman Daniel Ngieng Kiong Ann said those involved in the snooker fraternity should put in more effort in order to lift the profile of the game.

He said sports like golf or tennis were able to enjoy high profile status because players put lots of efforts to promote the game.

?Sport itself is a dead game. It is the efforts of the players who need to inject and pump in energy and commitment to make the game noble,? he said at the opening of the Central Zone Snooker Championship held at Sibu Cueball Snooker Centre on Monday night.

A total of 48 players from the central zone took part in the week-log contest organised by Sarawak Billiards Snooker Sports Federation (SBSSF).

Players from SMC areas contributed the bulk totaling 31, followed by five players each from Saratok and Matu/Daro, three from Mukah, two from Kapit one each from Bintangor and Sarikei District Council.

Among those at the function included Sibu Division Billiards & Snooker Association president Danny Wong and SBSSF?s deputy chairman David Tan.

?It?s not wrong to love and respect your sport but if you just play the game without putting in efforts to make the sport popular, it is highly unlikely that the sport will become noble,? he said.

Ngieng, nevertheless, expressed his confidence that the intense efforts put forward by the snooker enthusiasts to develop the sport would make the sport a prestigious and a respected game among the population.

He added that sports or any form of games is a good forum for us to grow.

?It not only helps shape our character and develop our mental strength but it is also a good platform to promote friendship and mould us into a better person.?

When a group of people come together to play the same sport, they would talk about the common topics and this in a way help to forge better friendship, he asserted.

Ngieng also reiterated that human beings were always the greatest enemy to themselves.

?When they fail to do well in sports, they tend to blame the tables or the sticks for not working wonder. They will literally blame anything except themselves.? A sportsman with that kind of attitude is doomed to be a failure.?

Ngieng reminded the players not to be afraid to make mistakes but to continue to learn and improve their skills.

?Mistakes and setbacks are the best form of teachers that will help us to improve. In sports, there is no shortcut to success. Throwing tantrums and losing temper after a defeat would not make a champion. The players ought to persevere in order to improve their skills and excel in future championship,? he noted.

On snooker, Ngieng said the sport initially drew flak and received heavy criticism from the people in general.

?People will frown and look at you in a different opinion simply because one visited the snooker centres,? he said.? Ngieng said those perceptions were foregone eras and these days, the sport received equal attention from the authority concerned.? He said the sport was also widely screened through television depicting players in smart dress and bow ties.

?Asian players are also coming up, notably Chinese players and these are signs that the Asian players can offer tough challenge in the international arena.?

What You Should Know About Los Angeles Bed And Breakfast ...

One of the primary differences in Los Angeles bed and breakfasts nowadays is the degree to which the keepers of the establishment are involved with their guests. Customarily, a bed and breakfast meant staying in a room where it was likely that photos of the owner?s kids would be hanging on the walls and you would probably be involved with conversation with the keepers prior to retiring for the night. Obviously though, this style isn?t to everyone?s tastes; you may like a slightly more intimate atmosphere than a hotel room would provide, but still want a sense of staying in your own place.

What bed and breakfasts offer as opposed to large-scale accommodation providers is a personalized approach into a region and its culture. The hosts should be able to advise on places of interest, where to eat, upcoming events and things to do without the time pressure of having to attend to a large number of customers. Most bed and breakfasts are owned by the innkeepers, who usually live on the premises. It?s natural to expect that innkeepers who live in their own inns will bring a different perspective to the job than someone who works a shift behind a hotel reception desk and then goes home and forgets about the customers left behind.

Although most inns offer private baths, verify with the innkeepers if the bathroom is shared or private. A private bath is usually in your room, however sometimes it is in the hall exclusively for your use (innkeepers often provide robes if the bathroom is outside your room). Ask about check in and check out times and try and arrive within them. Innkeepers can usually be flexible if you need special arrangements. Since innkeepers are expecting you and want to be there to greet you, be courteous and let them know if your arrival time changes.

A bed and breakfast farm stay is most likely to be a relaxation farm with some farm leisure attractions. It may be a substantial working farm with a wide range of farm activity experiences. Such activities might include horseback or pony rides, hunting and fishing, bird watching, farm education and nature trails. These farm stays might also conduct tours of nearby attractions concerning farm activities. At some farm stays, anybody wanting to try their hand at farm chores can (and a helping hand is usually welcome). There could be pigs, chickens and horses to feed, cows or goats to milk, cheese to make, organic gardens to tend, jelly to prepare, fruit trees, honey bees, olives and chestnuts to reap. Bed and breakfast farm stays may be found in rural areas or outback environment.

Guests need to do their research before making your reservation for a Los Angeles bed and breakfast online. Check their site for user reviews, awards and any press coverage the inn could have gotten in consumer-related media. Also, a number of the online directories come out with periodic awards for deserving inns. B&Bs that provide a link to their online reviews are often proud of the quality their guests can expect.

Searching for a decent Bed and Breakfast Los Angeles is difficult. Fortunately, VillaBerta is there to cater to any lodging dilemma! It?s the perfect blend of amazing architecture and convenient location that makes it a great Los Angeles bed and breakfast for your visit to L. A..

The Aspiring Martial Artist's Guide To Choosing A Style | Content for ...

Author: Erik Blair | Total views: 13 Comments: 0
Word Count: 797 Date:

When you finally decide to practice the martial arts, the very first conclusion you should make is which style to study. Many people pick karate or taekwondo, a couple of the most popular styles coached these days. Others lean toward the more exotic systems, that include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Krav Maga, each frequently displayed in MMA matches. Rookies generally would like to know which MA style is the best. The reply is none of them.

There are benefits and drawbacks to learning any martial arts system. A few are more physically demanding than the others. Some are more suited to fighting in competitions. The "greatest" style is the one which fits your objectives. We will talk about this in more fine detail beneath, and present a few questions you will need to ask yourself before you choose a system.

Different Martial Arts Forms And Their Concentrations

It is critical to be aware of how each MA style approaches combating as that on its own could seriously impact your selection. Karate, a striking art, focuses on the use of the limbs in addition to the knees and elbows. Taekwondo is another striking art, even though there is hefty focus on the feet. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu emphasizes grappling, which implies it also emphasizes takedowns and ground control. Both judo and aikido are kinder systems, highlighting throws over attacks.

Matching A Fighting Style To Your Goals

Your objectives will play a key role when deciding on a fighting system. By way of example, suppose you would like to enroll into martial arts classes due to the fact you are thinking about conditioning. Karate and taekwondo are great choices because each offer lots of movement.

Taekwondo can also be a good choice if you are thinking about contending in events. If you're going to compete in events that involve grappling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and judo are more suitable choices.

Assume you're considering signing up your children into kids' martial arts classes. Here again, karate and taekwondo are perfect choices. Both provide young people an energetic, appealing atmosphere that will hold their interest and encourage them to excel.

Several ambitious MA students are curious about learning a fighting system they can use for self-defense. We will come back to this subject in a moment. For now, it's well worth observing that any of the systems mentioned so far may be used successfully for this objective depending on the situations.

Are You Willing To Get Into Shape?

We mentioned earlier that some MA systems are more intense as opposed to others. It is one thing to decide you would prefer to study this kind of style. It is another thing altogether to actually do it well.

As an example, imagine you opted to register into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu courses. To be able to practice the style, and even maintain training, you will have to be in fairly good condition. If you are not presently physically fit, are you prepared to become so?

Additionally it is worth taking into consideration past injury. A bad back or weak knee should inform your decision concerning which style to choose.

Exactly What Kind Of Fighting Do You Like Best?

Many people enjoy grappling. Others prefer to stay standing, and employ their hands and feet to hit their competitors. Your preferred fighting style ought to play a role in selecting a style. Martial arts that focus on ground fighting (i.e. grappling) include jujutsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and sambo (a Russian art). The ones that emphasize staying on your feet comprise of karate, kung fu, and taekwondo.

There are components of both wrestling and striking seen in a couple of MA systems, such as aikido and hapkido (a Korean art). This will be significant to be aware of if you've got a strong aversion to one or the other.

A Side Note On Using The Martial Arts For Protecting One's Self

Martial arts institutions will usually declare that the systems they coach are ideal for using in self-defense. Even though any fighting style may be used to defend against an assailant, a number of systems are better than others. For instance, a skilled kung fu artist may be good at protecting himself against an unwary assailant; but someone trained in Wado Kai Karate is bound to have much more success since the style is deeply-rooted in self defense.

As you can tell, picking a martial arts style is more complicated than it appears. Consider the above factors to ensure you select a style you'll enjoy pursuing over a lifetime.

The Basics of Super LearningSelf-Improvement Index: Find the Best ...

Super learning is a collection of techniques that helps a person get, process and use data in a quicker rate than most people.

It is a very helpful technique that one can use to get ahead in life and get the most out of the ocean of information that?s out there for us now.

We have varying styles of learning. There are particular methods that allow us to absorb additional info than to what we can if we use another method.

Super Learning

Speed learning can be applied to anyone. That?s one of the many great things about it. It appeals and works- regardless of what your background is. It does not matter if you?re young and old, woman or man. Speed learning even works splendidly (and in actual fact quite better) for children.

Speed learning has a long and fascinating background. Once considered as a ?pseudo-science? it?s now generally accepted and studied across the world. It?s also the evolved version of speed reading.

There are numerous dimensions in learning; these dimensions are the very first thing that you will need to identify when you choose to take on speed learning. When you know a lot you will need to about the process and science of learning, you?d be able to make the super learning process less complicated.

Super learning is also a fragile but rigorous process. It isn?t something that you can learn overnite or in 2 weeks. It?s a process and it consists of a system that you need to follow step-by-step.

You should also be in a relaxed and chilled state of mind when you study speed learning. The more relaxed your brain is, the less complicated it will be for you to understand what speed learning is and how to use it in the most effective demeanour.

Learning Pyramid

To more clearly understand what super learning is, you ought to know about the learning pyramid: tools, environment and you.

These 3 corners of the pyramid are truly interlinked. You may have the proper tools and have the most conducive environment, but if you?re not ready or you don?t have the right perspective, your super learning lessons will not actually be that effective.

So how do you make a powerful learning pyramid for your super learning?

  1. Find the best super learning resource or coach. Never accept any program that doesn?t ring ?perfect? to you. This is a crucial milestone in your life, you shouldn?t settle for less.
  2. Make a study room or area that?s clean, relaxing and uncluttered. A clear space can relax your gourd so, make learning easier.
  3. Get incentivized! Make sure that you are ready and willing to go through all of the processes needed for your super learning lessons. You must also start a more healthy diet that may boost or sharpen your memory.

Obama, Cameron discuss Mideast peace (AP)

NEW YORK ? President Barack Obama says the U.S. and Britain are "keenly interested" in resolving the decades-long conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

Obama commented Wednesday afternoon as he sat down with British Prime Minister David Cameron in New York.

Cameron also expressed interest in "moving again" on the Mideast peace issue.

In a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Obama said there are no short cuts to peace. He urged the Israelis and Palestinians to sit down and solve the issues themselves.

The Palestinians have pledged to seek a declaration of statehood from the U.N. Security Council. Obama said such a move won't solve the issue and the U.S. has pledged to block it.

Teen pregnancy and the costs of teen parenting have a financial price tag of over $10 billion per year and a greater cost, physically and emotionally, to the children involved. The effects of teen parenting on children are linked to the issues stated above.?Fatherlessness alone is creating an entire generation of children who have no concept of the type of home and family intended for children.?Over 43% of our nation?s children are born to single women, and less than 8% of pregnant teens will marry the fathers of their children.?

In 2002, a program began that was aimed at educating teens about the long-term consequences of teen pregnancy.?That program, ?Decisions, Choices & Options:? Facts about Teen Pregnancy,? started with one high school and is now in over 40 schools in the Middle Tennessee area and has recently expanded to cover the states of Alabama and Mississippi.?This classroom presentation begins with the message of abstinence and then reveals the difficult truth about each of the options facing a teen in an unplanned pregnancy:? parenting, abortion and adoption.?The option of adoption rises to the top as the most beneficial choice of the three. To our knowledge, there is no other curriculum like this one in our state that includes information on all of a pregnant teen?s options.?

Lifeline Children?s Services began taking this program into local high schools last year and is receiving more requests for the presentation from interested schools.?Our coverage up to this point has been primarily in Shelby County, but we would love to increase the number of schools to include Jefferson County and Birmingham City as well.?Would you please join with us in our efforts to speak the truth in love to our teens?

In order to get this important and powerful program into the communities that surround us, we need willing volunteers to co-lead presentations and to help us make connections with teachers, school administrators and youth leaders to get a foot in the door of other schools and churches.

If you would be interested in learning more about partnering with Lifeline Children?s Services to take this education to the kids in your community, please make plans to attend a brief interest meeting and training on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the office of Lifeline, 2104 Rocky Ridge Road, Birmingham, AL, 35216.?Our time together will include an overview of the actual PowerPoint presentation and video(s) and further explanation of the needs and benefits of the program.?

It is our great joy to partner with First Priority to offer this training to you.?If you are able to attend, please RSVP to Traci Newell at traci.newell@lifelineadoption.org or (205) 972-8467.?I sincerely hope that you will make it a priority to join us in October to learn more about this exciting opportunity for the youth in your area!

Sincerely,

Traci Newell
