Park City local and New York Times contributor Carl Richards will premiere his Kimball Art Center show ?Visualizing Finance,? Feb. 11. The show features the simple cocktail napkin sketches Richards creates as a way to explain economic principles.
?It?s funny,? Richards said. ?You know how people put oil on canvas? Well, this is sharpie on cardstock.?
Richards would be the first person to say he?s not an artist, but that doesn?t mean his work hasn?t garnered any local respect or interest in the show.
?He is so entertaining,? said Robin Marrouche, the Kimball Art Center director. ?He?s on to something with his drawings. When you look at these simple sketches, he?s boiling down very complex economic theories in a way that allows you to have an ?aha? moment.?
Richards said Marrouche?s take on personal finance is pretty common.
?I don?t know many people who aren?t frustrated with their money,? he said. ?Smart, educated, successful people still get frustrated, and part of that is because it?s gotten so complex.?
Richards grew up in Park City as a child and moved back in 2010. His first involvement with the center outside of a childhood art class came last May when he hosted an Art Talk.
?It was the most well attended Art Talk we have ever had in the history of the series,? Marrouche said.
She said pulling in Richards has opened the center up to audiences they?ve never reached before. The Park City Angels are holding their monthly meeting at the show where Richards will speak. An ad agency made plans with Marrouche to bring in its entire staff to demonstrate ways to think creatively.
?It?s a very serious subject, but he?s made it fun, funny and creative,? she added. ?That?s why it?s so powerful.?
Visitors can participate in an interactive feature of ?Visualize Finance,? where they can draw their own sharpie sketches that may be featured in The New York Times.
?People can draw their own version of a financial concept and including in art show,? Richards said.
On Feb. 23, the Kimball Art Center will host Tess Vigeland of NPR?s Marketplace Money, who will interview Richards for the show and as part of the center?s monthly Art Talk. The event is free and will begin at 6 p.m.
The show will run through April 11 at the Kimball Art Center located at 638 Park Avenue. For more information visit www.kimballartcenter.org or call (435) 649-8882.
