Nigella Lawson returns to Twitter for son's birthday

30 JUNE 2013 Nigella Lawson has returned to Twitter for the first time since images emerged of an argument between herself and her husband, Charles Saatchi. To celebrate her son's 17th birthday the celebrity chef and writer posted a photogaph on the social networking site of the birthday cake she made for Bruno.

The chocolate cake, studded with candles in the shape of miniature bottles of champagne, read 'Happy Birthday Bruno' and has since been re-tweeted 163 times and 'favourited' by 657 of Nigella's fans.

Many of her followers replied to the tweet with positive messages about her return.

"Good to see you back," wrote one user. "Hope Bruno had a wonderful birthday."

Nigella's fellow celebrity chef, Gizzi Erskine, was also pleased to see the Nigellissima author back online.

"second this xxxxxxx" wrote Gizzi, responding to a Twitter user who said "Welcome home Lady."

The picture of Bruno's cake is in keeping with Nigella's usual tweets, which include images of her culinary masterpieces of a near daily basis.

Bruno is the younger of Nigella's two children. She also has a daughter, Cosima, both from her marriage to former journalist, John Diamond, who died from throat cancer in 2001.

Nigella's relationship with her second husband, Charles Saatchi, became the subject of attention two weeks ago when shocking photograph were published of art collector Charles gripping his wife's throat during an argument.

Charles, who is worth a reported ?100million, said the photos depicted a "playful tiff" and that Nigella was unharmed.

"About a week ago, we were sitting outside a restaurant having an intense debate about the children," claimed Charles. "And I held Nigella's neck repeatedly while attempting to emphasise my point," he told the Evening Standard.

"There was no grip, it was a playful tiff. The pictures are horrific but give a far more drastic and violent impression of what took place. Nigella's tears were because we both hate arguing, not because she had been hurt."

Charles has since been cautioned for his actions and late last week Nigella was seen moving her things out of the family home.

The TV chef had removal men take belongings from the ?12million house in Mayfair that she had shared with her millionaire husband and has also been spotted without her wedding ring on.

Prior to Nigella's tweet on Saturday, the only word from the TV chef was in a statement last week from her publicist which confirmed she had "left the family home with her children".

"Her heart is bleeding right now," a source close to Nigella told The Sunday People. "She wants out.

"Neither she nor Charles are interested in counselling or trying to save the marriage. It seems they?re done and she is broken and desolate."

Portland's New Streetlights Are Psychedelic, Carnivorous Plants

Portland's New Streetlights Are Psychedelic, Carnivorous Plants

If you've seen one streetlight, you've pretty much seen them all. They're important, sure, but they're usually not much to look at. The lamps that popped up across Portland are a little bit different. A little more like giant, carnivorous plants.

"Nepenthes" by Dan Corson is a collection of four, 17-foot tall light-up sculptures that devour sunlight, and spit it back out after sundown. Though they share their name with plants known for eating bugs and occasional small animals, these sculptures just soak up rays during the day with solar panels mounted on top, and use that energy to glow for about four hours after dark. Just run-of-the-mill synthetic photosynthesis for these plants.

Made from translucent fiberglass with embedded with LED lights formed around a steel spine, each of the four lamps is structurally identical, but has a uniquely wild color scheme that sets it apart from its brothers. All and all, they seem like a neat represention of the "urban jungle," and it's a good thing they're a little more urban than jungle. [Dan Corson via Designboom]

Early Investment in Franchise Concepts: OneClick Cleaners Launches California

?

June 30, 2013 -- Early Investment in Franchise Concepts: OneClick Cleaners Launches California

Brooklyn, New York (PRWEB) June 30, 2013

OneClick Cleaners has just entered into a territory development agreement for California adding to a number of states being serviced by Master Franchisees in the United States. The addition of this Master Franchisee, adds to the list of states already launched, including: Florida, Colorado, Washington, Idaho, Oregon and New Mexico. OneClick Cleaners is focused on developing the franchise through Master Franchisees, as this a proven franchise method for both growth and successful franchise units.

Looking over the best brands and concepts over the past 20 years, for the average business investor of $50,000 to $250,000, the strongest options come from the concept of becoming a Master Franchisee (also known as Territory Developer). The basic structure of a Master is to acquire a larger territory for development, where one would recruit, train, and develop the standard franchisee base. In exchange for this work, the Master will typically earn commissions and long-term residual income in the form of royalties.

Our franchise concept enhances the leading factors that capture uniqueness in our market that has lead to rapid growth strong branding, proven business model, industry differentiators and edge over competitors and innovations, said CEO Joseph Albert of OneClick Cleaners. The dry cleaning industry has been successful for many years; we just applied our model and unique twist. We are growing rapidly because of it.

Imagine the initial territory developers for concepts like Five Guys, Jimmy Johns, Serv-Pro, Val-Pak, or SportClips? These are all brands that have grown substantially and provide unique aspects that help them stand out and gain market share. One of the major benefits of becoming a Master Franchisee is the access to growing a brand concept in an area that you control and personally develop with the support and guidance of a franchisor home office.

So what about OneClick Cleaners? Throughout the globe, one of the cornerstones of any region are the service category businesses, such as hair salons, house & business cleaning, auto repair, lawn care, massage, etc. all providing core services that people use. Dry cleaning is no different. Pull into any small shopping center in America and you are likely to see a traditional cleaner hard at work providing garment care to his community. In some cases, you will find multiple cleaners within a one or two block radius. Do you ever wonder why? It is simple this is a core service that every walk of life needs whether it is a simple shirt service, cleaning a suit, or caring for household items like comforters and drapes.

Becoming a traditional dry cleaner will require a fairly substantial investment. Developing a store with equipment takes time and money plus the expense of a high lease, labor, and materials. A typical dry cleaner customer will spend about $25 on average, per visit. The margins in a dry cleaning business are quite good comparatively, mainly because the staffing and materials expenses are very low compared to other businesses.

The OneClick Cleaners concept is much different this business concept focuses on leaner operational costs and outsourcing the expensive portions (dry cleaning labor, lease costs, and equipment) allowing the business owner to concentrate on growing the customer base. Another differentiator is the online presence that OneClick Cleaners has developed; innovating a 100% online approach to business development and management including a cashless business for the franchisees to operate. Customers enroll online and manage their account and payments in the cloud. As for regular (no-master) franchisees, they will typically invest less than $50,000 all-in (the franchise fee, operating capital and a vehicle,) operating the unit as an owner/operator and maximizing margins, which are typically 50% or higher.

A typical Master territory will be a large metro area, partial or full state, or collection of states and require a higher investment (varies by territory size). Plans are in development to expand to other countries as well. As a Master Franchisee, OneClick Cleaners investors will concentrate on developing a territory with franchisees, earning money in three ways:

  • ????Commissions on franchise fees (50%)
  • ????Monthly ongoing royalties payment
  • ????Owning and operating their own unit(s)

Ford Escape Intermittently Dies Can't Post

2003 Ford Escape, six cylinder, 3.?, automatic, with 75K miles.

Car intermittently dies. We just bought this car for my 18 year old son 10 weeks ago, about 4 weeks ago it died when he was out delivering. It he was parked after restarting from a delivery he started backing out it died, it was a hot day so he shut off the AC and radio. He restarted it right away and it ran for a block and died again, all the warning lights came on, it restarted right away and he called me, we switched cars. It ran fine, temp and everything was good, I stopped and looked at the codes nothing was set. So in the next several days I looked everything over, checking hoses and the most common items, the only things that did I replaced the air filter and I cleaned the mass air flow sensor with the proper cleaner for it. The air filter was dirty, so I drove the car for several days and had no problems so I gave it back to my son to use.

It worked well for about 4 weeks and on June 26 it happened again, the same as before and again no codes were set. I have drove the car for the last two days and I have had no more incidents yet! It runs very good. In the last two days I have been checking all the wiring harness and so far I have not found anything. Unsure

Intermittent problems are a bXXX to find.

My questions is there anyone that is had the same problem and what did you do to fix it in your case? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Terry Ziegenhorn

Re: Ford Escape Intermittently Dies [In reply to] Can't Post

No codes and intermittent stalling out? Are you sure there are no codes?

Dirty air filter? With what? Road dust, pollen or dunno?

In that it can run all those cycles codes could self clear so may take some wiggle testing of connections, wiring, vacuum hoses, water misting (easy doing that) to see if you can aggravate it to locate a problem spot.

No harm in checking fuel pressure as it might be borderline. Seems more of a GM thing. Toss fuel filter just because unless you know it was just done,

Re: Ford Escape Intermittently Dies [In reply to] Can't Post

The only code was a security warning we added a remote control and programed it, I assume that it was from that.

The air filter was just road dust, so I put a new one on and cleaned the mass air flow sensor also.

I did do a lot of poking and prodding of the wiring and the hoses, nothing yet. I will try water mist and carb cleaner, all the hoses look new. ??

This has only happened at a low idle?? I would expect if it was the fuel filter or pressure that would set a code. At least it did on my other son's ranger.

Do you happen to know what the pressure is supposed to be? I think the next time I run to town I'll get a book for this car and filter.

Thanks

I have not noticed anything abnormal on the AC yet, the clutch and the PSI is good. I agree with you on the switches, but it was something easy to try.

Susan Rice says Snowden leaks have no significant diplomatic consequences

Susan Rice, outgoing ambassador to the U.N., and President Barack Obama's next national security adviser, said Edward Snowden's leaks have done nothing to harm the Obama administration, and that the US will get through this period.

By Edith M. Lederer,?Associated Press / June 29, 2013

Outgoing US Ambassador Susan Rice speaks to reporters at her final news conference at the U.N. headquarters. Rice, who will start her new job as national security adviser on Monday said the Obama administration was not weakened by Edward Snowden's leaks, and that it was simply a difficult issue of the day.

US Ambassador Susan Rice dismissed claims that Edward?Snowden's?highly classified leaks have weakened the Obama presidency and damaged US foreign policy, insisting that the United States will remain "the most influential, powerful and important country in the world."

Rice's remarks were her only public ones on?Snowden?and came in an interview with The Associated Press as she prepared to leave the U.N. post and start her new job Monday as President Barack Obama's national security adviser.

She said it's too soon to judge whether there will be any long-term serious repercussions from the intelligence leaks by the former National Security Agency contractor who fled to Hong Kong and then Russia after seizing documents disclosing secret US surveillance programs in the US and overseas, which he has shared with The Guardian and Washington Post newspapers.

"I don't think the diplomatic consequences, at least as they are foreseeable now, are that significant," she said.

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have called?Snowden's?leaks a serious breach that damaged national security. Hagel said Thursday an assessment of the damage is being done now.

"There will always be difficult issues of the day," Rice said, "and frankly this period is not particularly unique."

"I think the?Snowden?thing is obviously something that we will get through, as we've gotten through all the issues like this in the past," she said in the interview Thursday before heading to a lunch in her honor hosted by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The United States has charged?Snowden?with espionage and demanded his extradition, but China and Hong Kong let him fly to Moscow and the Russians have so far refused. The?Snowden?case has not only raised tensions with Moscow and Beijing but with many Americans concerned about the NSA collecting their Internet and phone data.

Rice dismissed commentators who say?Snowden's?disclosures have made Obama a lame duck, damaged his political base, and hurt US foreign policy, saying: "I think that's bunk."

"I think the United States of America is and will remain the most influential, powerful and important country in the world, the largest economy, and the largest military, (with) a network of alliances, values that are universally respected," she said.

Rice said Obama has "significant ambitions and a real agenda" for his second term, pointing to major speeches last week on disarmament and nonproliferation and this week on the impact of climate change.

As for?Snowden, she said, "It's often, if not always something, and US leadership will continue to be unrivaled, demanded, expected ? and reviled and appreciated around the world."

Rice, 48, is expected to bring her outspoken and aggressive negotiating style to her new, higher-profile job.

At the United Nations, she has been a bold and blunt ambassador, successfully pushing for tougher sanctions against Iran and North Korea and international intervention in Libya. But Libya ultimately caused her greatest professional disappointment when she became the face of the administration's bungled account of the terrorist attack in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the US ambassador.

The furor scuttled Rice's long-held hopes of becoming secretary of state when it became clear she would not gain Senate confirmation to that post, which went to John Kerry.

Rice has called her 4 1/2 years at the U.N. "the best job I ever had," and told The AP she would be "hard-pressed" to think of any better place to prepare for her new post.

"You get to deal with ... literally every country under the sun, and I think you get a unique feel for the orientations, interests, styles, of a wide, wide range of countries," she said.

To succeed at the U.N., Rice said, it's crucial to form alliances and coalitions, which change depending on the issue, so a friend one day can be an opponent the next day.

Rice has sparred repeatedly with Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, who can be equally blunt. But despite being on opposite sides of the Syrian conflict, which has paralyzed council action to end the fighting, Rice said they agree perhaps 85 percent of the time.

"I like and respect him," she said. "I think he likes and respects me, and it's been a good relationship. That's why I asked him to speak at my farewell. I asked people who were important to me. He's a very smart and a very funny guy and he can be a pain in the butt, too ? and I tell him that to his face!"

At the farewell, Churkin delivered an off-the-record roast of Rice, without notes, that had some 300 diplomats, U.N. officials and journalists doubled-over in laughter.

The Syrian conflict will be near the top of Rice's agenda in Washington as will the nuclear ambitions of Iran and North Korea.

Rice said the result of Iran's presidential election earlier this month, a victory for Hasan Rouhani, a moderate who supports direct talks with Washington, "was a dramatic demonstration of the Iranian peoples' dissatisfaction with the status quo."

"To the extent that the leadership feels obliged to heed popular opinion ? obviously we would hope they would ? it may perhaps signal a readiness to move in a different direction, and if so, we would welcome it," she said.

American-US Airways merger: Feds investigate possible antitrust issues

Airlines

A U.S. Airways jet departs Washington's Reagan National Airport next to American Airlines jets outside Washington, in this February 25, 2013 file phot...

LARRY DOWNING / Reuters

A U.S. Airways jet takes off from Washington's Reagan National Airport outside Washington, passing an American Airlines plane, February 25, 2013. Reuters reports the Justice department is probing the proposed American-US merger for antitrust issues.

The U.S. Justice Department is taking depositions as part of a probe into a planned merger of American Airlines and US Airways that would create the world's largest airline, three sources close to the discussions told Reuters.

The sticking point in talks between the Justice Department and the companies is whether the airlines will agree to sell slots -- take-off and landing rights -- to reduce their dominance at Reagan National Airport outside Washington, D.C., according to one source.

The three sources spoke privately to protect business relationships.

US Airways announced on February 14 that it planned to merge with American, which is emerging from bankruptcy, to create an $11 billion airline. The deal requires the approval of the Justice and Transportation Departments. The companies hope to wrap up the merger by the end of September.

American Airlines and US Airways declined comment. Justice Department spokeswoman Gina Talamona said only that the agency's investigation was continuing.

The fact that the Justice Department is taking sworn testimony in the form of depositions indicates it has concerns that the proposed merger creates antitrust problems. Depositions will be needed if the agency approves the deal with conditions or, in rare cases, if it decides to try to stop it. The department could also decide to approve the merger without requiring asset sales.

Depositions preserve testimony if the department decides to challenge the merger, said Robert Doyle, an antitrust expert with Doyle, Barlow and Mazard PLLC.

If the deal is approved, the new airline would have 68 percent of the slots at Reagan National, far more than Delta Air Lines with 12 percent, United Airlines with 9 percent and the 11 percent held by other airlines, according to a report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

The companies have pushed back hard against any suggestion that takeoff and landing slots at Reagan National be sold.

US Airways CEO Doug Parker told lawmakers in congressional testimony last week that requiring the combined company to surrender slots could mean fewer flights to small and medium-sized cities.

Antitrust experts have said the Justice Department could request divestitures of some slots at Reagan National and a small number of other airports. Outside these hubs, the carriers fly different routes for the most part.

In late May, more than 100 members of Congress asked U.S. regulators to allow the new American to keep all the slots at Reagan National. The airport is used by many members of Congress to travel to and from their home districts.

The U.S. airline industry has undergone five years of rapid consolidation. Delta acquired Northwest Airlines in 2008, United merged with Continental in 2010 and Southwest Airlines Co bought discount rival AirTran in 2011.

With fewer carriers competing, ticket prices have risen. The average fare rose about 8 percent to $375 in the third quarter of 2012, compared with $346 in 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Witness to Zimmerman-Martin 'tussle' says he saw punches before shooting

On Friday a neighbor who contradicted what other witnesses have said about the struggle between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin, was questioned as to how well he could really see in the dark. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming it was self-defense. NBC's Ron Mott reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Tom Winter and Rob Rivas, NBC News

A resident of the gated community where Trayvon Martin was killed told a Florida court Friday he saw the unarmed teen punching George Zimmerman before the two had a fatal confrontation in February of 2012.

Jonathan Good was watching TV with his wife at the Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26, 2012, when a faint noise caught his attention, he told a Seminole County court Friday. When he heard more noise, he opened his sliding glass door, took a step outside, and spotted what "seemed like a tussle.?

??I could really only see one person, and I think I described it as possibly being some type of dog attack, because there are a lot of dogs that walk in that back area,? Good said.

But as the figures rolled a little closer to Good on the rainy evening, he realized it was two people.

?And then at one point I yelled out, ?What?s going on?? and ?Stop it,? I believe,? Good told the jury, who is seated for Zimmerman?s second-degree murder trial. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense.

Good only saw the two fighting for what he described as ?10 seconds, max? before running inside to call 911, but his eyewitness account of Martin?s final moments could prove crucial for jurors and investigators in the case.

Good didn?t recognize either men, and said one was straddling the other.

?I could tell the person on the bottom had a lighter skinned color,? Good said. Zimmerman is of white and Hispanic descent, and Martin is black. ?

When one straddled the other, the person on the bottom was ?face up,? he said.

?I think at that time is when I thought it was serious,? he said.

?OK. What made you think that?? prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda asked.

??'Cause it looked like there were strikes being thrown, or punches being thrown, but as I clarified, due to the lighting, it could have also been, you know, holding down. But there were arm movement[s] going downward,? Good said.

?And the arm movements that you describe, would that have been from the person on top?? De La Rionda asked. ?

?Correct,? responded Good.

Later, in cross-examination, defense attorney Mark O?Mara pressed Good for specifics of the confrontation.

?The person who you now know to be Trayvon Martin was on top, correct?? O?Mara asked.

?Correct,? Good said.

?And he was the one who was raining blows down on the person on the bottom, George Zimmerman, right??

?That?s what it looked like,? Good said.

Good added it was too dark to see many details, and said he was too far away. He also said he didn?t see either person slam the other?s head against concrete, something Zimmerman alleges Martin did and part of the reason he says he acted out of self-defense in shooting Martin.

But Good did say he later heard screams coming from one person, who he believed to be Zimmerman.

?If it was coming from on top it would have echoed off a wall instead of coming directly at me,? he said.

He added he couldn?t say for sure which person it was.

911 call played in court
Good?s 911 call ? which he placed when he heard the gun go off ? was also played for the first time in court on Friday.

Eyewitness Jonathan Good watches prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda demonstrate possible fight positions of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin during the 15th day of the Zimmerman trial in Seminole circuit court, in Sanford, Fla., on June 28.

Martin?s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, sat quietly during Good?s testimony. Fulton held ?Our Daily Bread,? a Christian monthly devotional, in her hand.

Parts of the cross-examination were decidedly antagonistic.

?Don?t really want to be here, do you?? O?Mara opened his cross-examination by asking. ?You were very reluctant to be involved in the case at all, correct??

Good agreed that he was one of the only witnesses who had requested anonymity and had not wanted to partake in the trial.

O?Mara questioned Good about a martial arts phrase he had used with police officers in his initial statement to describe Martin and Zimmerman?s fight.

?What you saw was the person on top in an MMA-style straddle position, correct? That was further described, was it not, as being ?ground and pound.? What is ?ground and pound? as you define it?? O?Mara asked.

?The person on top being able to punch the person on the bottom, but the person on the bottom also has a chance to get out or punch the person on top. It?s back and forth,? Good said.

O?Mara also demanded to know exactly what Good, who did not know either Zimmerman or Martin, saw that night, questioning him numerous times about his definition of being positioned in ?vertical? and ?horizontal? standings. Good, visibly annoyed at times, invited O?Mara to get down on his knees to demonstrate the positions he saw for the jurors, which the lawyer did.

Good is the next-door neighbor of Jenna Lauer, another resident at the Retreat at Twin Lakes gated community, who testified on Thursday. Lauer placed the 911 call that captured screams in the moments before Martin?s death. On Thursday, she told the court that she heard ?scuffling? that sounded like ?sneakers on pavement and grass? before she called 911.

Editor's note: George Zimmerman has sued NBC Universal for defamation. The company strongly denies the allegation.

Hawaii hiking trails to be on Google Street View

HONOLULU (AP) ? Hawaii's volcanoes, rainforests and beaches will soon be visible on Google Street View.

Google Inc. said Thursday it was lending its backpack cameras to a Hawaii trail guide company to capture panoramic images of Big Island hiking trails.

Photos will be loaded to Google Maps and the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau website, gohawaii.com.

"The most magical places that we all know and love in Hawaii need to be reached on foot ? they need to be explored that way," said Evan Rapoport, Street View project manager.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google has already taken Street View images of the Grand Canyon and other places popular with travelers.

This is the first time the Silicon Valley company has handed over its "Street View Trekker" to another party to have someone else take the images.

Rapoport said Google will offer the technology to other organizations around the world who want to sign up for similar partnerships. Groups like tourism boards, government agencies, universities and nonprofit organizations might be among those to use the device, he said.

Having people who know a given place best take Street View images will make Google Maps more interesting and useful, he said.

On the Big Island, Hawaii Forest & Trail guides carrying the trekker device will walk along more than 20 state and national park trails by the end of September.

Hawaii Forest & Trail will mail memory cards with the images to Google, which will process the data. Photos from 15 cameras in the trekker will be stitched together for a 360-degree panorama, Rapoport said.

The images should be online by the end of the year or early next year, said Jay Talwar, chief marketing officer of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau.

The project is a partnership between Google and the visitors bureau, which promotes the state to North American markets. The agency plans to expand the effort to the rest of the state. It's currently looking for partners who will take Street View images of trails on other Hawaii islands.

Obama in South Africa for next leg of Africa tour

CENTURION, South Africa (AP) ? President Barack Obama is in South Africa, embarking on the second leg of his three-country African journey. The visit comes at a poignant time, with former South African president and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela ailing in a Johannesburg hospital.

Obama is expected to meet with U.S. consulate staff in Johannesburg Friday. On Saturday he is to meet with South African President Jacob Zuma. The two men are then expected to hold a joint news conference.

Obama said Friday he wasn't certain whether he'd be able to see Mandela, who is gravely ill, during his visit.

Following his visit to South Africa, Obama is scheduled to go to Tanzania. He traveled to South Africa from Dakar, Senegal.

USC finds that D-Wave's quantum computer is real, maybe

D-Wave processor wafer

D-Wave has had little trouble lining up customers for its quantum computer, but questions have persisted as to whether or not the machine is performing quantum math in the first place. University of Southern California researchers have tested Lockheed Martin's unit to help settle that debate, and they believe that D-Wave's computer could be the real deal -- or rather, that it isn't obviously cheating. They've shown that the system isn't based on simulated annealing, which relies on traditional physics for number crunching. The device is at least "consistent" with true quantum annealing, although there's no proof that this is what's going on; it may be using other shortcuts. Whether or not D-Wave built a full-fledged quantum computer, the resulting output is credible enough that customers won't feel much in the way of buyer's remorse.

5 ways students changed in the last 40 years ? Schools of Thought ...

By Jamie Gumbrecht, CNN

(CNN) ? Every couple of years, the National Assessment of Educational Progress releases a short-term snapshot of how students fare in science, civics or other subjects.

But it doesn't ?quite answer the big question: How are students really doing?

That's the job of a report released Thursday, "The Nation's Report Card: Trends in Academic Progress 2012." It's an assessment released every four years that tracks U.S. students' performance in reading and math since the 1970s. The 2012 assessment included more than 50,000 students from public and private schools. It tracks them at ages 9, 13 and 17, regardless of grade level, and compares their performance using tests - mostly multiple-choice questions - that take about an hour to complete.

Here are five things to know about academic progress since the 1970s, according to the 2012 report.

9-year-olds and 13-year-olds outscore 1970s counterparts
Indeed, those kids scored higher in reading and math. In reading, 9-year-olds and 13-year-olds improved at every level, so even the lowest-performing kids now are ahead of the lowest-performing kids then. In fact, kids in the low and middle range showed the greatest gains.

17-year-olds? Not so much
Seventeen-year-old students aren't scoring better in reading and math, but their scores aren't falling, either. In reading, the lowest-performing 17-year-olds made gains since the 1970s, as did lower- and middle-performing 17-year-olds in math. But scores overall are about the same as in the early 1970s ? and that might not be all bad. In a conference call with reporters, Peggy Carr, associate commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics' assessment division, pointed out that there are far fewer dropouts than in the 1970s; even with more kids in school, performance has remained steady.

Gender gaps are shrinking
Just as in the 1970s, girls perform better in reading, and boys perform better in math.

But female students are narrowing the math gap, or even eliminating it. "In 2012, there were no significant gender gaps in mathematics at age 9 and 13," the report says. "At age 17, male students scored higher in mathematics than female students. The gender gap in 2012 at age 17, however, was narrower than in 1973 due to the increase in the average score for female students."

Meanwhile, male students are squeezing the gap in reading by showing significant improvement at age 9.

Black and Hispanic students are making gains
Consider just how much students' demographics have changed: In 1978, 80% of U.S. students were white, 13% were black, 6% were Hispanic and 1% were Asian. In 2012, 56% of students were white, 15% were black, 21% were Hispanic and 6% were Asian.

White students still perform better than black and Hispanic students in reading, but the gaps between white and black and white and Hispanic are narrower for all ages. It's particularly noticeable among 9-year-olds: "The average score for black students was 36 points higher in 2012 than in 1971 ... and the score for white students was 15 points higher," the report says. "The average score for Hispanic students increased 25 points from 1975, and the score for white students increased 12 points."

In math, white students performed better overall, but black and Hispanic students made larger gains than white students since 1973.

Take another look at that summer reading list
At age 9, 53% of students say they read for fun at home almost every day. By age 13, it's 27%. At 17, it's down to 19%. The percentages for 9-year-olds have remained the same since 1984, when the question was first asked, but it has decreased over time for 13- and 17-year-olds. Why does it matter?

"At all three ages, students who reported reading for fun almost daily or once or twice a week scored higher than did students who reported reading for fun a few times a year or less," the report says.

Watchdog warns of waste in Afghan aircraft buy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon is spending more than three-quarters of a billion dollars to buy Russian-made helicopters and other aircraft for an Afghan aviation unit that lacks the troops and expertise to operate and maintain the equipment, a government watchdog warned.

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction said in a report Friday these shortcomings mean the helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft destined for the Afghan Special Mission Wing "could be left sitting on runways in Afghanistan, rather than supporting critical missions, resulting in waste of U.S. funds." The report recommended putting the purchases on hold until the Afghans develop the capacity to support the aircraft.

The findings are sure to reverberate on Capitol Hill, where there is stiff opposition to the purchase of the Mi-17 helicopters from Rosoboronexport, the state-run Russian arms exporter that is a top weapons supplier to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The Pentagon announced June 17 that Rosoboronexport had been awarded a $554 million contract for 30 Mi-17s to be used by the Special Mission Wing, a move that came just days after the House approved a 2014 defense policy bill that included a prohibition on contracts with the Russian agency. The Senate Armed Services Committee included a similar ban in its version of the bill.

The defense policy bill for 2013 also barred the Pentagon from using funds from that fiscal year for contracts with Rosoboronexport. But the Pentagon said money from the 2012 fiscal year was being used for the Mi-17 acquisition, so the restriction does not apply.

A Defense Department spokesman said there was an "urgent, near-term need" to buy the wing the Mi-17s, a multimission aircraft designed to operate at high altitudes and uniquely suited for the wing.

"Careful consideration of all the information available to the department confirms that it would be in the public interest to procure the Mi-17s needed for the (wing) from Rosoboronexport," Army Lt. Col. Jim Gregory said in a statement.

In addition to the Mi-17s, the Pentagon is spending $218 million on 18 PC-12 cargo aircraft from the Sierra Nevada Corp. of Sparks, Nev., to allow the Special Mission Wing to perform counterterrorism and counternarcotics missions, the report said.

The special inspector general is recommending the purchase be suspended until the wing's staffing, recruiting and training problems are resolved. Chief among them is finalizing a memorandum of understanding between the Afghan interior and defense ministries that would give the military control of the wing. But the document remains unsigned due largely to the interior ministry's "resistance to surrendering authority" over the wing, according to the report.

Michael Dumont, the deputy assistant defense secretary for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia, said in comments included in the report that delaying the purchase of the aircraft until the agreement was signed "would unacceptably delay our efforts to develop the (wing) into a capable force."

The wing was to have 806 personnel by mid-2015, but as of late January had just 180, according to the report.

Filling out the wing's ranks won't be easy, the report said, due to challenges of finding Afghan recruits who are literate in their own language, competent in English and can pass the strict, 18- to 20-month U.S. vetting process that includes eliminating candidates who have ties to criminal or insurgent activities.

The flow of Afghan trainees from helicopter flight training at Fort Rucker, Ala., to more intense training in the Czech Republic "has been slow and uneven, ranging from a low of two up to eight trainees at a time," according to the special inspector general.

The report blamed a lack of steady funding for the training from the Defense Department, failed background checks for prospective pilots and flight engineers, and the Czech government's requirement that each Afghan trainee have a certificate signed by Afghan authorities.

Compensation, especially for mechanics, is another barrier to recruitment because Afghans with a basic command of English are in high demand and can get higher pay elsewhere, the report said.

Another key shortcoming is the dearth of pilots capable of flying at night, when most counterterrorism missions are conducted. As of late January, only seven of the 47 pilots assigned to the wing were fully mission qualified to fly with night vision goggles, the report said.

Turning off cells in habit-associated brain region prevents rats from learning to run maze on autopilot

June 27, 2013 ? Our daily routines can become so ingrained that we perform them automatically, such as taking the same route to work every day. Some behaviors, such as smoking or biting your fingernails, become so habitual that we can't stop even if we want to.

Although breaking habits can be hard, MIT neuroscientists have now shown that they can prevent them from taking root in the first place, in rats learning to run a maze to earn a reward. The researchers first demonstrated that activity in two distinct brain regions is necessary in order for habits to crystallize. Then, they were able to block habits from forming by interfering with activity in one of the brain regions -- the infralimbic (IL) cortex, which is located in the prefrontal cortex.

The MIT researchers, led by Institute Professor Ann Graybiel, used a technique called optogenetics to block activity in the IL cortex. This allowed them to control cells of the IL cortex using light. When the cells were turned off during every maze training run, the rats still learned to run the maze correctly, but when the reward was made to taste bad, they stopped, showing that a habit had not formed. If it had, they would keep going back by habit.

"It's usually so difficult to break a habit," Graybiel says. "It's also difficult to have a habit not form when you get a reward for what you're doing. But with this manipulation, it's absolutely easy. You just turn the light on, and bingo."

Graybiel, a member of MIT's McGovern Institute for Brain Research, is the senior author of a paper describing the findings in the June 27 issue of the journal Neuron. Kyle Smith, a former MIT postdoc who is now an assistant professor at Dartmouth College, is the paper's lead author.

Patterns of habitual behavior

Previous studies of how habits are formed and controlled have implicated the IL cortex as well as the striatum, a part of the brain related to addiction and repetitive behavioral problems, as well as normal functions such as decision-making, planning and response to reward. It is believed that the motor patterns needed to execute a habitual behavior are stored in the striatum and its circuits.

Recent studies from Graybiel's lab have shown that disrupting activity in the IL cortex can block the expression of habits that have already been learned and stored in the striatum. Last year, Smith and Graybiel found that the IL cortex appears to decide which of two previously learned habits will be expressed.

"We have evidence that these two areas are important for habits, but they're not connected at all, and no one has much of an idea of what the cells are doing as a habit is formed, as the habit is lost, and as a new habit takes over," Smith says.

To investigate that, Smith recorded activity in cells of the IL cortex as rats learned to run a maze. He found activity patterns very similar to those that appear in the striatum during habit formation. Several years ago, Graybiel found that a distinctive "task-bracketing" pattern develops when habits are formed. This means that the cells are very active when the animal begins its run through the maze, are quiet during the run, and then fire up again when the task is finished.

This kind of pattern "chunks" habits into a large unit that the brain can simply turn on when the habitual behavior is triggered, without having to think about each individual action that goes into the habitual behavior.

The researchers found that this pattern took longer to appear in the IL cortex than in the striatum, and it was also less permanent. Unlike the pattern in the striatum, which remains stored even when a habit is broken, the IL cortex pattern appears and disappears as habits are formed and broken. This was the clue that the IL cortex, not the striatum, was tracking the development of the habit.

Multiple layers of control

The researchers' ability to optogenetically block the formation of new habits suggests that the IL cortex not only exerts real-time control over habits and compulsions, but is also needed for habits to form in the first place.

"The previous idea was that the habits were stored in the sensorimotor system and this cortical area was just selecting the habit to be expressed. Now we think it's a more fundamental contribution to habits, that the IL cortex is more actively making this happen," Smith says.

This arrangement offers multiple layers of control over habitual behavior, which could be advantageous in reining in automatic behavior, Graybiel says. It is also possible that the IL cortex is contributing specific pieces of the habitual behavior, in addition to exerting control over whether it occurs, according to the researchers. They are now trying to determine whether the IL cortex and the striatum are communicating with and influencing each other, or simply acting in parallel.

"A role for the IL cortex in the regulation of habit is not a new idea, but the details of the interaction between it and the striatum that emerge from this analysis are novel and interesting," says Christopher Pittenger, an assistant professor of psychiatry and psychology at Yale University School of Medicine, who was not part of the research team. "Thinking in the long term, it raises the question of whether targeted manipulations of the IL cortex might be useful for the breaking habits -- and exciting possibility with potential clinical ramifications."

The study suggests a new way to look for abnormal activity that might cause disorders of repetitive behavior, Smith says. Now that the researchers have identified the neural signature of a normal habit, they can look for signs of habitual behavior that is learned too quickly or becomes too rigid. Finding such a signature could allow scientists to develop new ways to treat disorders of repetitive behavior by using deep brain stimulation, which uses electronic impulses delivered by a pacemaker to suppress abnormal brain activity.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Office of Naval Research, the Stanley H. and Sheila G. Sydney Fund and funding from R. Pourian and Julia Madadi.

Google Working on Game Console to Compete with Future Apple ...

According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Google has an Android-based a video game console and smart watch in the works in order to compete with products the company expects Apple to produce in the future.

Google is also continuing development on the Nexus Q, a media console that it announced last year but did not release. The Nexus Q was designed to stream music, video, and YouTube content to home entertainment systems, similar to the Apple TV.

With the watch and game console, Google is hoping to combat similar devices that Apple Inc. may release in the future, the people said.

The people briefed on the matter said Google is reacting in part to expectations that rival Apple will launch a videogame console as part of its next Apple TV product release.

This is not the first time it has been suggested that Apple could use the Apple TV to make a serious foray into the console gaming market. Tech sites have speculated for years that gaming on the Apple TV might be in Apple's future, and earlier this year, Xbox founding engineer Nat Brown said that Apple could "destroy" console gaming with third party apps on the Apple TV.

apple_tv_interface_2012
In February, TechCrunch's MG Siegler confirmed that Apple has something television related in the pipeline, which might be a television set or a revised box. Siegler suggested that gaming could be the major focal point of the new television product.

While Apple has referred to its Apple TV as a hobby project, the company has seen sales continue to rise over the years. With the second generation Apple TV and the introduction of AirPlay Mirroring for iOS devices with iOS 5, gaming on the set-top box became possible for the first time.

Clever developers have already begun using that technology to turn the Apple TV into a gaming console, with several implementing second screen capabilities that turn the iPhone or iPad into a controller. A game released earlier today goes even further, morphing the iPhone into a motion controller that serves as a tennis racket.

Now Apple has revealed that it has established partnerships with Logitech and MOGA to develop third party MFi certified gaming controllers, which would better facilitate television-based gaming, suggesting that the company may indeed be turning its focus to serious gameplay. It should also be noted that 21 of the top 25 all time best selling App Store apps are games.

mogaprocontroller

A MOGA Gaming Controller

It is not unexpected that Google is planning for a gaming solution of its own to compete with a potential Apple offering, as the Mountain View-based company began work on a smart watch around the same time that Apple was developing a watch of its own. News of Apple's upcoming smart watch dubbed "iWatch" surfaced in December, and hints that Google would develop a competing product surfaced in March, though the company filed for a patent on the technology at an earlier date.

Wearable computers and fitness tracking devices such as the Pebble Smart Watch, the Jawbone UP, and the Nike FuelBand have soared in popularity in recent months and in addition to Apple and Google, other companies like Samsung and Microsoft are said to be developing wearable computing devices. Google already has experience in the market with Google Glass, which it plans to release to the public next year.

According to the WSJ, Google hopes to design and market its devices in house, releasing at least one product this fall. There are no hints on when Apple could potentially launch a revamped Apple TV or a smart watch, but its gaming controllers are expected in the fall alongside the iPhone 5S and iOS 7.

Tim Cook has also suggested that the company has "amazing new hardware, software, and services" coming later in the year and throughout 2014.

How we're renegotiating our marriage with our yearly "relationship ...

Homie Cassandra left this awesome comment on our post about long-term relationships. So of course we asked her to elaborate and turn it into an awesome guest post.

When I was in my 20s I went to acting school in NYC. I had a terrible and abusive teacher whom I ended up despising. Despite that, she mentioned something one day that had a great influence on me. She was approaching her 35th wedding anniversary and offhandedly said that she and her husband renegotiated their marriage each year on their anniversary. I loved the idea and 13 years later, when I started dating my husband, incorporated it on the anniversary of our first date.

So for our anniversary we have our "relationship summit" or our "State Of The Union" address. We talk about where we are and what we want and if changes need to be made. This can be anything from "I don't want children, and if you do I love you and don't want to deprive you of them, so maybe we should part ways" (dating anniversary #2), to "pick up your socks" (somewhere around wedding anniversary #3 or 4), to "I see recurring patterns that cause you suffering. And even though this isn't about me, I don't want to get to old age and still see you suffering. Will you please think about getting some counseling, for the both of us?" (last year).

But what's more important is the time when we come to "I want to stay married to you for another year." It really is optional. A few years ago when mid-life crisis hit my husband and I was afraid he was thinking about leaving I reminded him that he had re-upped for at least another 10 months and he owed it to me to hang and see if we could work it out. We did.

We shared this practice at our wedding, which was on our anniversary (which happens to be Valentine's Day). We even had a wedding "intermission" where we went off into seclusion to do the summit. It was a great opportunity to be alone for 15 minutes and to really center ourselves.

These are the big issues. Ones that can't be solved when things are heated and doors are slamming. Ones that won't resolve themselves with makeup sex.

I remember once talking to a younger person about it in our early years and he said "That's great. That means you actually talk about stuff." It may seem like an artifice but we do, indeed, talk about stuff. Usually over a nice dinner (before drinks). And it's not just limited to that once a year.

A few weeks ago, after I had a disturbing dream where my husband told me he was leaving for greener pastures, I talked to him and said "I don't want to be just the greener pasture, I want to be the greenest pasture. And I want you to think about it for our next summit." These are the big issues. Ones that can't be solved when things are heated and doors are slamming. Ones that won't resolve themselves with makeup sex.

So even though that teacher wasn't great she did teach me som'n. Wasn't about acting but it was about life. And though I still wouldn't thank her to her face I will spread her lesson. Think about it. It works for us. We've been together for 19 years now and married for 13 and I see a long future ahead. One that we'll live without feeling terminally trapped but with freedom of choice.
