UT System ending decades old relationship with Texas Southmost College

Officials with the University of Texas System and Texas Southmost College will sign formal lease agreements on Friday, July 26 that will allow the two schools to separate from their joint campus.

The University of Texas System and Texas Southmost College will sign lease agreements that will allow for the separation of Texas Southmost College and the University of Texas at Brownsville.

The two schools shared resources, programs and a campus for the last 20 years. UT-Brownsville is separating because state lawmakers passed a resolution during the last session that paved the way for the school to merge with the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg. The merger of UT-Brownsvile and UT-Pan Am will also allow for the development of a stand-alone medical school in the Rio Grande Valley.

The closest health program in the South Texas region for years had been the Laredo extension campus of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
